I joined the CBS station Promotion department at a critical and creative time: handling various projects associated with launching the 2010/2011 television season. I routinely updated CBS PromoNet (our service website); produced promotional spots and special presentations, as well as miscellaneous print and online projects.

I have assisted in the production of three new show production toolkits which were offered to CBS affiliates in August. These are promotional and commercial in nature; and each are designed for ease of execution on the station side and require universal technical considerations, legal clearances, adherence to the overall marketing strategies of the network and considerable creative input.

In addition, I assisted in the development of new animations, designs and copy writing for PromoNet’s new season style and content updates. I produced a new log-in page, banners, web ads, and a new intro animation for the home page of the site.

But most importantly, I have participated in multiple staff and department meetings and have developed productive working relationships with freelance artists, freelance producers and web masters. I’ve also gained introductory operational skills on AVID editing system (AVID Nitris DX).

“If you can work the AVID, you can work on anything in the business.”

It was a great time during which I developed an understanding and appreciation of CBS corporate culture and marketing strategies and philosophies. Starting my career in the entertainment business at CBS is the smartest move I could’ve made. Class act people, and an organization that is committed to being the best.

I want to extend my sincerest thanks to:

It’s been an interesting and hectic week to say the least. Running around non-stop from project to project as we inch closer to the last week of my internship. We finally got the approval for all the sponsorable spots we’ve been working on the entire summer. During the week, we basically took care of tweaking and breaking down every aspect of the spots: from titles, to shots, sound bites. You name it, we revised it. We had a couple issues that were resolved fairly quickly and before we knew it, the spots were up and feeding for the stations. I’m talking about Hawaii Five-0, The Defenders , and Blue Bloods.

The spots look great and pretty soon I’ll have them uploaded to all my sites for everyone to check out.

Aug. 13 is my last day at CBS so be on the look out for a final week review and a look back at this summer.

Until then...stay tuned.

This past week was interesting as always. On Monday, July 26 I sat in on two show tapings: one for The Price is Right, hosted by Drew Carey (who let me tell you, is a class act and great guy) and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. I brought my mom along so she could enjoy a day seeing how damn good television is made. Drew Carey has lost over 80 pounds and looks great, and I have so much more respect for Craig Ferguson after seeing that it is literally a one man show. He doesn’t have any cue cards like Jay Leno, nothing is scripted; he just goes out and does his thing. Morgan Freeman was his guest and it was really cool to see them both in person, plus we had really good seats so I was in the front row. The Price is Right is HILARIOUS, I was blown away by all the fanatics, and I mean FANATICS that sat in the audience.

Anyway, as the week progressed I continued to work on our sponsorable preview spot for BLUE BLOODS. After several revised versions we finally finished a :30, and an ALT :30. Now we need to pass it through legal and if we get the thumbs up from them then we’re ready to go. I can’t wait to share all this material with you guys once the internship is done. We officially finished BLUE BLOODS on Friday, which was great after a long week behind the Avid. Above is a screengrab of Alex O'Loughlin, the star of Hawaii Five-0, featured in one of our spots.

Now all that remains is to work on the announcement that will feature promotion of these spots for our station affiliates…but I’ll update you all again on this next week.

Until then…stay tuned…

...and so the journey continues...

Hey guys, been pretty busy lately at CBS but here we go yet again with another update from the city of angels. The week started off with a bang as we got the go ahead to continue producing our :30 second spot for BLUE BLOODS (Fridays 10/9c). After a meeting with our contacts in NY, they liked what they saw and approved the production of this spot. I spent most of the week with my hands on the Avid; piecing together the right spot. After a couple days I was assigned to check that our graphics were current. Basically, to make sure that everyone is using the same, and up-to-date logo for a show. We’ve also continued to progress towards the completion of PromoNet’s redesigns, as we got a preview of our new intro animation…of course tweaks and changes still need to be made.

After a long day Thursday, and with my younger siblings in town to visit, I gave them the CBS TV City tour late at night. It was a change from the fast pace world of TV and it was a chance to see this monster sound asleep…even if only for a couple of hours. We went around everywhere and they loved every minute of it. The best part was when I took them on top of the roof, where most times, we sit and sun bathe, or eat our lunch up there. But it was almost 7:30 at night, and all you could see was the fog rolling in over the Hollywood sign and engulf the strip. It was a great view and I was happy to have shared it with them.

I have just two (work) weeks left at CBS, and I can’t believe it’s coming to an end so quickly. It’s been a blast. I’ll continue to update you guys every chance I get.

Until next week; stay tuned…

Sorry I was a little late in posting this week, I’ve been really busy…Well I can’t believe it’s already been 4 weeks of this internship. The weather in California is finally starting to shape up, and it feels like summer. The days are warm; the nights are breezy and comfortable. The only constant has been that I’m as busy as a bee.

My boss (Steve) got back from vacation on Monday. After editing some preview spots for Hawaii Five-0, and The Defenders the previous week, I was certain he’d come in and piss fire on what I had put together. After an early morning spent updating PromoNet and making phone calls, it was time for my boss to start getting the artillery ready. We went down to the Avid bay where we stood and watched my cut played on the big screen. After 30 seconds I hear; “Hm. Let’s see it again.” So, the spot was replayed. Then, the words came out of his mouth: “I like it, let’s see the fifteen.” (15 second promo). So, my editing big brother, Dan, played the 15. Steve’s face lit up (I didn’t know whether to run out of the room or bathe in my glory). “This is fantastic.” Suddenly, a drop of sweat rolled down my forehead. He asked me: “Are you looking for permanent work?” relieving the tension in the room. It felt great; he really liked what I had put together. I had never even touched an Avid keyboard.

Shortly after we got the thumbs up for Hawaii Five-0; Steve brought me into his office and we watched a cut of The Defenders. His face remained stone-cold. You could see he wasn’t pleased with how it turned out. Oh man did he scrutinize this one; we lacked in story, substance, everything. But you can imagine how hard it is to fit so much into 25 seconds worth of television. Then, he uttered words I will never forget: “Elliot, you’re a FILMMAKER. You are a story-teller. Go down there, and tell the story of THE DEFENDERS.” My confidence level went to Neil Armstrong heights in seconds: I literally fist-pumped my way downstairs to the Avid bay, and Dan and I compared our ideas and meshed our creativity to create the best possible spot.

I then got to work by myself on composing the third, and final preview spot for our new fall lineup: This time, for BLUE BLOODS. It’s coming together nicely and I’ll have a final cut soon. This week has been busy busy busy…but it’s such a blast. PromoNet has been re-designed and most of our new designs are online; were just going through the kinks and etc. In other news, I sat in on a voice over read as done by “the hollywood voice over dude”. I thought it was pre-recorded and I was laughing through the whole thing because little do all of you know, that’s how these guys really talk. My co-workers were looking at me like “don’t laugh, you’ll instigate him: he’ll just keep going” I just kept laughing, and laughing.

Thanks for reading, talk to you all soon. Stay tuned…

It's been a nice week. The June gloom of Southern Cal has stretched far into July; so everyday is pretty cloudy with very light showers. Anyways, the work week began on Tuesday...

I spent nearly all of my time this week in the editing room, working on some promotional material for HAWAII FIVE-0, and THE DEFENDERS. Under the close eye of one of my mentors, we completed :30, and :15 second TV spots for both shows. I also got familiar with the Avid editing system. One of the more "hollywood-esque" moments of the week, came at the CBS cafe'. Where, as I had lunch, Eric Roberts came walking in for something to eat. I sat with another intern and asked her, "Hey, is that Eric Roberts?" Sure enough it was. I felt so cool to be eating lunch in the same room as Eric Roberts. Apparently he's going back to soap operas; doing "The Young and The Restless." Here's a link to check out...

http://hollywoodinsider.ew.com/2010/06/17/the-young-and-the-restless-lures-eric-roberts/

Wednesday was an exciting day: while I was quietly editing the preview spots, all of a sudden my legs began to shake. I felt sick, and I looked around and saw that the room was also moving slightly. Then, I heard the rumbling of footsteps running down the hallway. I felt as if I was on a rocking boat on the ocean. 15 seconds later, as I sit in my chair not knowing what to do, I hear a voice down the hallway: "Hey did you feel that babyquake?" There I was, so proud that I had sat through my first California earthquake. The editing rooms are underground at CBS, so as you can imagine, were underneath this monstrous structure. As my Avid mentor, Dan put it: "Next time you feel that you bolt down this hallway and haul ass out that door." Point taken sir.

Later on in the week, we held a phone conference with CBS4 our affiliate in my hometown of Miami. I had pitched my bosses the idea of getting the South Florida station on board to join us in our Hawaii Five-0 launch campaign. We exchanged thoughts and ideas, and loved what they had in mind: they are officially on board, and I'm proud that I was an intricate piece in getting my hometown station on board this project. Oh and did I forget to mention...the Miami Heat completed the most impressive roster haul in recent memory? Yeah, that was kind of a big deal this week.

Until next time, stay tuned...

It's hard to believe its only been 2 weeks at CBS; it feels like I've worked for "the eye" for a long time. Anyway, this past week was rough and tough from start to finish.

On Monday I had a tour of CBS Studios in Studio City. It was an interesting
experience: we got to check out a lot of the sets and stages used for shooting various CBS programs, etc. Particularly Parks and Recreation. It was a very interesting set to say the least. Everything, and I mean everything; from the pens on the desk, to the tiles on the floor, have been masterfully crafted to achieve an authentic sense of realism. However, before the tour in the afternoon, I spent the morning planning out and sketching new designs for PromoNet (mentioned in my earlier blog). We also made some phone calls to our
station affiliates all around the country in continuation with our Hawaii Five-O: America's theme song launch campaign.

Throughout the course of the week, I poked my head in and out of the Avid
editing bays. I sat at times for hours watching the masters do their thing. I
think the only real way to be great is to watch the masters at work, then use
what you learn from them and apply it to your craft to become greater. As usual, I've been quizzed on show names, air times, and actors...this time doing a lot better than week 1.

I have also been writing 30 second sponsorable preview spots for Hawaii Five-O, and The Defenders. Part of me writing these scripts is for the "Preditor"(Producer/Editor) to have a clear shot for shot list of what to put together because believe it or not, a 30 second promo may take you a full work day to knock out if you're not prepared.

The best part about writing these scripts is that I get to share my ideas with Dan, my "big brother" editor, and combine our imaginations to make the greatest ad possible. Dan's taken me under his wing and is a young, cool guy: I'm looking forward to creating these spots with him, as well as getting to know Avid to the
best of my ability.

On another note, we've made progress on the re-designs of PromoNet: the log-on page has been approved, and new logotype as well. We have a ways to go before we can call it totally updated but all in due time.

Well, that's all for this week at CBS. Stay tuned! Also, check out my webTV
www.elliotosrin.com

I'll be uploading some new trailers and behind the scenes footage for "Joker" soon.

Have a great holiday weekend, and thanks for reading.

I work in the promotion and advertising department where my duties range from updating the CBS personnel website known as PromoNet, to engaging myself and my creativity in department meetings, etc. But that’s not all, in keeping with my primary interests (production, etc) I am to engage myself in the editing rooms, as well as write scripts for on-air promos.

The first day was anything but slow:
at CBS Television Studios in Studio City, I sat through an informative and exhaustive company orientation. There, I was able to meet all of the other interns. After orientation and exchanging contacts, I headed over to Hollywood to meet with my boss; Steve King. We caught up, gave me the Television City tour, and treated me to lunch. I have my own, very comfortable office with my name on the door (which is pretty cool)…but, the best part about working in TV? You guessed it: a TV in your office. It’s freaking’ awesome.

After getting myself and my things accommodated, it was time to get down to business. Another boss of mine, Jeff Melby, sat me down and gave me the tutorial on how to update the PromoNet page. PromoNet for those of you who don’t know, is a webpage strictly for use of CBS employees. On that page, you will find just about everything pertaining to CBS TV: from graphics and music, logos, tie-in planners, and announcements. It’s a really neat site.

Now, I mentioned to Steve before I even got the job, “I honestly don’t watch TV.” That was about to change, and within a matter of days, I stuck my nose into the show guide for the fall season of 2010-2011. I memorized the actors, dates, show names, and most importantly: air times. Steve quizzes me almost every chance he gets just to make sure I’m on top of my game. It may sound funny, but I’ve only spent a week with all of them, and it feels like they’re my extended family. I feel like a kid, and they’re really doing an outstanding job guiding me through the ins and outs of the biz. We’ve also been working on CBS’s new logo designs and colors for the fall season as well; it’s an entirely different look. It’s fresh, young, hot, and sleek and I think it’s something a lot of people are going to enjoy.

But, the most important and exhaustive thing I’ve worked on this past week is our launch campaign for the much anticipated, reboot, “this isn’t your father’s version”, of HAWAII FIVE-0. Now, not ever having been a fan of TV, and NOT because I’m a CBS employee, I must tell you that I’ve seen the pilot for this show and it looks great. It’s got a great, young, and hot cast which I’m really looking forward to watching this fall. The campaign we’ve been working on is to get a couple of street performers to either hum, or play the legendary theme song of the show in front of his/her town’s recognizable landmark. We’re in talks with just about every market you could imagine, from Washington DC, to Kansas City, Missouri. It’s really going to be something special, and I can’t wait to see how it turns out.

Being from Miami, I have been pushing for us to partner with our CBS-WFOR Miami/Ft. Lauderdale affiliate. The reason being is I pitched Steve the idea of having some really gorgeous women, and hard bodied guys on the South Beach strip humming and performing to the FIVE-0 theme song. He loved the idea and said if we could pull it off that he’d give it a go: well…we pulled it off. I’m really excited about the coming month at CBS; it’s such a productive, friendly, and informative place to work.

The thing that I have loved most about this past week? Well, it’s definitely the ability to be able to sit alongside some of the most creative minds in the business and be able to soak it all up like a sponge. Steve calls me in every chance he gets so I can be a part of their meetings and creative discussions…the part that I’ve disliked the most? L.A. TRAFFIC.

These men are helping me more and more every day. They give me every opportunity to display my creativity and my knowledge. Sitting in that office, at the cusp of my childhood dream, with pen and paper in hand, and CBS I.D. proudly displayed on my shirt pocket says: “You’ve got your foot in the door, now take that next step and become legendary.” To be perfectly honest with you, my bosses fill me with an unparalleled level of confidence and as a matter of fact, it’s the most confident I’ve ever felt about anything my entire life.

Until next week,

-EO
