Building Local Talent for Sustainable Education and Business Development - Christopher Fabian and Roya Mahboob

When you are the smartest guy in the room you are in the wrong room! Today I was in the right room! This morning at 11 am Roya Mahboob and I met with Christoper Fabian, adviser on innovation to the Executive Director at UNICEF.

Both Roya and Chris were named in the Time 100 Most influential pioneers list; Time defined Chris Fabian and his colleague Erika Kochi, development geeks; Jack Dorsey, Twitter Co-Founder, wrote in his Time 100 review: “Erica and Chris are using technology and accessible, intuitive interfaces to quickly transform the face of humanitarian aid and international development. The world will benefit from their continued efforts.”

The meeting touched several angles of Chris Fabian and Roya Mahboob work, we did find great parallels for the concept of Innovation Labs and Building Local Talent. Chris handed us a hard copy of the Innovation Labs, A Do-It-Yourself Guide; and we agreed to touch base later in June.

When I got back to my office I had a series of calls associated to the Examer expansion in South America with Brazil, a call for a Container Leasing project to support Women's Annex with San Francisco and a call about data and demographics management with Colorado; I did hang up my phone and started browsing the notes of the meeting with Chris Fabian and two things kept popping on my mind:

I was in the room with two very smart and inspirational people; its intimidating to write this blog...
Build Local Talent, or even better #buildlocaltalent; I love this ash tag!

The very first line of the guide (page 2) says: “Innovation Labs create global interoperability”

On page 10 a question and an answer: Who are the partners of a Lab?

This brings me back to our Afghanistan network of Internet Classrooms, or labs? With 8 classrooms in the high-schools of Herat, West Afghanistan, one Women's Center in Herat and one in Kabul; a network of 35,000 students browsing the web through our classrooms and 5,000 female students registered to the Examer Vocational and Educational Software.

One more aspect about this great inspirational meeting was the concept of the Innovation lab as the moderator and point of contact between local educational institutions or group of people interested to create solutions; the students and scholars are empowered to propose the solutions, design the curriculum or road map, they elevate the conversation; just like our vision to empower the students of Herat to write film treatments and support their vision with a network of high-schools equipped in the industries of 3D printing, stop motion filming, film editing, social media, professional blogging, data and demographic management; and a direct relationship with international businesses like Film Annex and other companies interested to Building Local Talent.

Похоже, что люди начнут снимать фильмы в космическом пространстве довольно скоро. Установки будут построены естественно внутри космических аппаратов. Возможно, там будет несколько сцен экстерьера. Не будет никакой необходимости для спец эффектов, потому что актеры будут летать по умолчанию. Кто не хотел бы поработать на такой съемочной площадке?

Вчера вечером, одна из моих любимых клипмейкеров, Эмили Кай Бок, написала: "Лучший Клип года тоже снят в Канаде." и залинковала с канадским астронавтом Крисом Хэдвилдом Chris Hadfield's rendition of David Bowie's Space Oddity. Я думаю, никто не догадывался о том, какой у Хэдфилда восхитительный певческий голос, но то, о чем я хочу рассказать - это о видео и самом Крисе Хэдфилде.

Произведено на Международной космической станции, когда его полет, длившийся 5 месяцев подошел к концу, видео Hadfield является, пожалуй, самым дорогим клипом, когда-либо сделанным, учитывая стоимость отправки человека в космос. Даже самые известные режиссеры могут фальсифицировать все это, но они естественно никогда не будут производить что-то похожее на Hadfield, по крайней мере, не сейчас. Он уже был подключен к такому количеству людей, что набрал 13 миллионов просмотров всего за 5 дней. Это действительно имеет смысл. Там даже есть видео под названием Chris Hadfield обсуждает Социальные медиа, в котором он, обсуждает обмен в социальных медиа и его отношения с его последователями.

В некотором смысле, Хэдфилд становится нашими глазам и позволяет нам увидеть мир с совершенно другого ракурса. Для меня социальные медиа Хэдфилда являются гораздо больше важными и ценными, чем Джастина Бибера или Леди Гага, но я должна отдать им (или их пиарщикам) должное за то, что у них так много преданных поклонников. В любом случае, я сейчас я фанат Хэдфилда, и есть так много, чему у него стоит поучиться.

The International Fashion Film Awards is around the corner and we are reposting some wise words that Mr. Fred Sweet shared last September on his WebTV for current and aspiring Fashion Filmmakers to consider while navigating this very competitive field. The title of this post states this is for fashion film directors but I would encourage ALL filmmakers especially to read the tips presented by Fred, including rules to go by, branding yourself and creative development.

The current environment is very competitive for the following reasons:

There are no barriers to entry.

Easy availability of hardware and software to produce films
Skills can be self-taught

Most fashion photographers are switching to video imagery.

Rules to go by:

One massively viral film does not make a director’s career

Therefore while having one or two big successes is good, it will not ensure future work.

Even the most well known fashion film directors do not make a living solely from fashion films. You must have another income source(s). This can be commercials, industrials, or contract work. It can also be something completely unrelated to film directing.
Figure out who you are:

A production house that produces films at the lowest possible cost.
A director with a known style and story behind them.

It will take a continuously implemented business plan to stay up with the competition and keep jobs coming in.
All production companies and representation agencies want people who have successful track records, and, just as importantly - large followings of social network fans and clients.
Leverage your work by working with fashion brands who will also have an interest in promoting your work. The bigger their social networks the better.
To rely solely on your creative abilities to propel your career and income is a bad idea.

With the worldwide marketplace so crowded now it is very unlikely you are doing anything that is completely unique to you.

Your success will be a combination of your ability to distinguish, (brand), yourself continuously in the marketplace and your creative skills.

The Basic Business Plan:

Premises to start with:

You are responsible for creating your own success. Once you do that, you will have all the power.
You must implement your plan everyday.

Branding Yourself

Start a Facebook page, either a personal or fanpage.

Post to it daily

Your films
Your thoughts and insights

Start and post daily to as many other social media sites as you can. Name the sites after you. Examples:

Tumblr
Youtube
Vimeo
Google +
LinkedIn

Submit your films to sites such as the Fashion Film Network and La Jolla Fashion Film Festival.
Develop your own resources. If at first you do not have a budget for your productions form a group of creative people you can count on. Go to industry networking events and make contacts.
Put together small, doable, events in your area where you debut your new films. These venues can be in art galleries, bars, offices, or restaurants. Film the events and use the imagery and content to upload to your social sites. That way the excitement and imagery of you and your film can live on far beyond your event.
Interact with as many of your fans as possible.
Develop a style that identifies you. The major fashion magazine and media make it point to tell you who shot their editorial spreads - why? Because who shot it is as important as the clothes in it. Who shot it adds value to the viewer, therefore the fashion company will pay much more for it (and you, if you have branded yourself properly).

Narrative vs visual effects
Strong storyboard vs interpretive plot line
Use of color
HD look vs Super 8
Soundtrack
Erotic elements
Editing style
Type of camera used
Hair and Makeup techniques
Lighting
Set design
Wardrobe styling
Art direction
Surprise elements
Humour
Drama

Remember the internet is like a huge moving river of new information. Unless you are continuously adding to your presence you will simply get lost in in all the data and swept down river to obscurity.

Develop Your Creative Skills

Even though it is sometimes frightening to do so, you must constantly be viewing what other directors are doing in the fashion film world. Does it make sense to produce a film that looks exactly like one just put out? People will either think you copied it or are not paying attention, both not good.
Take the time to learn new technical skills. Intelligence is irrelevant! Your ability to quickly master new skills will be the key to keeping you ahead of the competition.

Summary

Have another source of income.
Work continuously on building your fan base in social media.
Have a distinct style.
Depend on resources you develop.
Arrange your own screening events.
Stay abreast of what’s new in fashion films.
Submit your work to fashion sites.
Once you have built your name in the marketplace, the production companies will want you - not before.

To SPEC or not to SPEC?

Speculative? Specification? Specimen? Specify? Species? Spectacles? Speculum? Spectacular? Special?

SPEC???

Anyway, we're doing it. Mad Ruffian is now in the pre-production stages of making an EPIC SPEC spot! For a long while now, we toyed with the idea of doing it at all... Many people have many different views on whether producing a spec spot is a good idea.

Here's what we think:

We think it depends on how good they are. If you can tell that the spot isn't real or quality enough to have been conceived for months on end by an ad agency and approved by the picky client and then fought for by production companies and shot with a professional team, then it probably isn't worth putting on your reel... And, in that case, isn't worth pumping your own money and time into making in the first place! However, if you can produce quality and interesting work on your own that could compete with or fall in line with any real, commissioned TVC, then why not?? Go for it! The important thing to remember is that your idea must stand out - - not saying that it should be explicit or off brand - - however, if you are going to invest in anything for any business with the only intent being to attract new business, you ought to make sure it isn't boring or too much like someone else's. If you were an inventor, you wouldn't just reproduce another inventor's work!

So... with all of that spouting and blow-harding... keep a look out for it. We plan to shoot by early July. ...And did we mention, it is E P I C???

Can't tell you much about it yet, except imagine one of the biggest brands in advertising with the most successful ad campaigns in years. Yeah - them. And then imagine a small little husband and wife team taking-them-on!!!

How to Empower Women? A Reading Series

I'm back with my incessant questioning, how to empower women? How can I be a part of a movement of women for women? One way I'm doing this is with my reading series On Her Shoulders, but before I describe it to you I'm going to ask you a simple question, a hook if you will. Women have been writing plays for a thousand years, how many can you name? I'll give you a second. My guess is not many. I'm in a similar boat. Most people are, and so I found there existed a need for a reading series to collectively educate and empower ourselves on this very subject. On Her Shoulders was born of a meeting with two other women, Andrea Lepcio and Susan Jonas, a playwright and a dramaturg respectively, who noticed the same need for education on the plethora of female playwrights out there.

We have readings lined up through December 2013 at The New School for Drama, who generously donated space for the cause. For a complete list of the upcoming readings please see the schedule on the On Her Shoulders website. The readings are free, first come first served with an RSVP. The readings are introduced by an expert speaker/ scholar, who gives some background on the playwright and the play. Then we have a reading of the play with professional actors who have been directed in a couple of rehearsals prior to the reading, by one of the accomplished directors we have on board. During intermission we break to have light refreshments. At the end of the staged reading the expert leads a talk back with the actors and the director. The talk back is a particularly illuminating aspect of the reading as it opens the floor up to a dialogue with the audience. How did they receive the play? What were they surprised to learn about the playwright?

After the talk back I perform a quick survey and ask the audience three simple questions:

1. Had they heard of this playwright before this reading?

2. Had they read one of the plays written by this playwright before this reading?

3. Had they ever seen one of the playwrights plays read or performed aloud before?

It never fails that a group of audience members have heard of the playwright, a handful have read one of their plays, and only one or two have seen a production of the playwrights plays performed before. It shocks the audience and the actors to see these numbers, but to me it only clearly demonstrates the importance of the reading series.

Cannes' Films, Toronto Film Festival First Selection - Film Annex Industry Newsletter

Last week was a Special Cannes and we continue today with the latest news from the Riviera, where the Festival will close on Sunday. Many well-expected films have been unveiled already: The Bling Ring, by Sofia Coppola, Francois Ozon's Young and Beautiful, both exploring the life of young and eager characters, Nicolas Winding Refn’s Only God Forgives and Steven Soderbergh's last film before he retires, Behind the Candelabra. The film tells the story of pianist Liberace, played by Michael Douglas and his lover, Scott Thorson, interpreted by Matt Damon, going from romance to a more father-and-son relationship. After Soderbergh's statement on Hollywood and the state of cinema, most people will see his film as another commentary on celebrity and fame.

Festivals are also the place where you can seen exclusive scenes from upcoming features. The Weinstein Company came to Cannes this year to present several ones including Grace of Monaco by Olivier Dahan, starring Nicole Kidman, already at the Festival as a jury member. While Kidman's interpretation doesn't seem to top Marion Cotillard's transformation in Dahan's other film La Vie en Rose, the footage was shadowed by the glimpse given to the press at Kristin Scott-Thomas' performance in Only God Forgives. She plays a blond matriarch running a drug empire who manipulates her son into avenging his brother's death.

Back to the North America Festival scene, the Toronto International Film Festival just announced its first official selection. It will be presenting the world premiere of Visitors by Godfrey Reggio, officially introduced by Steven Soderbergh. About the movie, that will be played with a live orchestral performance of the score, he says, "It's a bold, beautiful, uniquely moving cinematic experience, and the live orchestra component is the proverbial cherry on top.” The Festival will run September 5 to 15.

المرة القادمة التي هي حاليا تحت الاختبار هي الرياضة و التسويق الرياضي في افغانستان و اسيا الوسطى .الان مع توماس رولي، الذي هو من محبي كرة القدم , نحن نبحث عن طرق اسلوب عدد الفرق الافغاني,لكي نرعاهم و على الاقل نجهز لهم الموقف المتعادل في الرياضة

تعليقات و آرائي كان على اساس البرنامج لتسويق المستهدف و مايكل سويني . هذا كان سهل للغاية لاراجع مقالاتي و مدوناتي التي كتبة في الشهر الماضي .

ادارتي كانت مبنية على احداث المدارس في افغانستان و عن اقتصاد افغانستان و هذا تأكيدا قويا من أفكارنا على القيادة والإدارة. وضع خطوة في اتجاه واحد مع روية واضحة من الاقوال و الاهداف الخاصة بكم ، هي رسالة واضحة و هدفا واضح .

My first baby is due this summer, and I’ve suddenly had to re-evaluate all of my priorities. Full-time teaching is wonderful, and I will undoubtedly return to that when our children are school-age. But until then, I want to enjoy those first precious years while I can without working 60+ hours per week, as teachers inevitably do.

To allow myself more flexibility, I have often considered starting my own business. For now, that thought terrifies me, so I am sticking with after-school tutoring.

“My advice to any woman wanting to start her own company? Do it!” says Debra Joester, President and CEO of Joester Loria Group for licensing and special events marketing. According to Joester, the world is finally ready for the creativity and contributions that women can bring to a company. In years past, female empowerment efforts such as these would have been frowned upon.

Not only do women work well together and support each other in the work place, but they add valuable organizational skills and a unique perspective that men are unable to provide. My husband works for Hobby Lobby, a nationwide craft store. His job is to analyze buying trends and then direct buyers on which items should be purchased more or less often. While my husband is very capable of doing his job well and has helped his company be more in tune to the needs of Hobby Lobby’s clients, he often talks about how 80 percent or more of the employees in his sector of the business are women. “They just get it,” he states. “Women know way more about crafts than I ever will.” If we’re being honest, I wouldn’t shop at Hobby Lobby if I knew that men were the only ones making decisions about scrapbook paper and home décor!

Even women in Afghanistan and other developing countries are receiving more opportunities to be involved in the workplace. Joester says, “Emerging markets can’t meet their full potential if women aren’t allowed to.”

The world is ready. Women, are we?

Film Review: THE HANGOVER PART III: the tee-total version

In a mainstream movie comedy there is usually sixty minutes of zany shenanigans – which I actually thought was an Irish bar until told otherwise – followed by twenty minutes of stone cold serious stuff followed by a ten minute comic sprint finish. THE HANGOVER PART III is that twenty minute part of a comedy stretched to a hundred minutes. There are some laughs, but they tend to be rather small. It only really rekindles that HANGOVER feeling in the end credits: the morning after an incredible night and Stu (Ed Helms) has eaten some really dodgy wedding cake...

Whizz back to the beginning and we’re in slow motion action movie mode. A warden of a Bangkok prison races across the screen. There is a riot and Mr Chow (Ken Jeong) – Leslie to his friends (does he have any?) has escaped. Cut to Alan (Zach Galifianakis) who is driving down the freeway towing a giraffe. Why a giraffe? Because Alan does not think things through! Needless to say, said long-necked beast causes a multi-car pile-up. Does Alan notice? No, he’s a 42-year old man child, the kind who marches into a room and says: ‘Mother, Oreo milkshake, now!’

Alan is not a particularly likable comedy character. Neither, for that matter, is Mr Chow. I have a rule: a comedy can only sustain one such figure, the annoying misfit; two of them and you’re heading for the exit.

So Alan’s father (Jeffrey Tambor) has died. The beautiful sound of ‘Ava Maria’ can be heard at his funeral. Who is singing it? If you’ve seen the trailer you know the answer. The ads basically give you the best jokes. What you have left is a thriller plot.

Alan’s friends, Phil (Bradley Cooper) and Stu and his brother-in-law, Doug (Justin Bartha) make an intervention. Alan needs to be weaned out of his man-childhood. They drive him to ‘New Horizons’ – ‘it does sound good,’ agrees Alan – but then they get the car bumped and the four men are snatched by raiders in piggy masks.

Now I know what you’re thinking? Where’s the booze? Well, there is none and I am not just talking about the dearth of beer at the London West End press screening I attended – okay, I’ll be on time at the next one. Alan, Phil and Stu have to do some hero stuff. They have to find Mr Chow for a ruthless gangster (John Goodman); the Wolfpack must become bloodhounds. Doug is kept as collateral. ‘Take Stu!’ wails Alan.

Still laughing? I thought not. Would you believe it but Mr Chow texts Alan and says he wants to meet. He’s in Tijuana. Time for some impromptu intoxication and crazy goings on? Er, no.

After a botched attempt to capture Mr Chow – they want to lure him into a cinema and drug him – the four men decide to recover Mr Chow’s gold from his old house. Wires have to be cut simultaneously. Only Mr Chow is colour-blind.

Expecting a double-cross? Of course. We have a thriller plot. But then the Wolfpack get a second chance as charges are dropped.

Still time to throw in some unexpected twists? Not quite. Alan recovers his mini-van by using Alan’s find-a-phone app. Cue a whinging speech from Alan about losing your phone. You’d lose it and you’d have to reload 60 apps. How disastrous. Alan meets the love of his life, Cassie (Melissa McCarthy, the obligatory not-so-surprise cameo) who works in a pawn shop. They share a lollypop. The woman crushes it. Wouldn’t you know it but Mr Chow has cashed in an ingot and intends to blow it on women and drugs. Alan knocks over stuff.

But where is Mr Chow? How can the trio find one crazy Asian in a city of – well, one imagines there might be many more. Stu calls in on his ex-surprise bride (Heather Graham) who now has two kids. She makes some calls.

There then follows one of the creepiest scenes in modern cinema as Alan bonds with the ex-stripper’s four year old son. They talk in the kid’s tent and Alan says he is the child’s father.

There is a race to Caesar’s Palace. Mr Chow has hired protection. He is in a penthouse suite with coke and women. Phil and Alan scale down from the roof to apprehend him.

At this point, there is real danger and the film is almost funny. Do they capture Mr Chow? That would be telling, but the trailer illustrates the chase sequence and Mr Chow’s big line: ‘I love cocaine’.

It all ends in the desert. Shots are fired. Matters are resolved. Alan decides to stay behind. Well, we saw that coming. A kiss and then trousers are dropped. Men children, eh?

Cut to six months later. Cassie and Alan get married. Cue a sentimental montage, then the credits.

Then comes the hangover.

I have described the film so you don’t have to see it. Save your dollars or rupees (I have at least one Indian reader, thank you sir). Just tell your friends, the final scene that’s funny – the monkey strikes back. The rest of it is pretty lame.

Did I tell you the characters get attacked by Mr Chow’s chickens? Well there has got to be animal action at some point and also a blackly comic moment when Mr Chow smothers one. If that does not sound funny, don’t say I didn’t warn you. The perpetrators are director Todd Phillips and his co-writer Craig Mazin. The trailer for WE’RE THE MILLERS, featuring Jennifer Aniston as an erotic dancer posing as a housewife has some promise. Drug smuggling is involved, which as we know isn’t that humorous.

Lavers: Can you describe your process when you make your animations?

Fried: Each animation I make is on one high-grade piece of paper consecutively scanned as I add ink, white-out, and coffee. The Deep End is 1500 scanned frames into Photoshop. They’re compiled and played back at 25 fps on Final Cut Pro. Then I add sound/music last. I complete about 10 – 25 frames a day (depends on what’s happening in the drawing – like adding small details or making sweeping changes), it takes about 4 months from the first drawing to the final film.

I mostly work evenings and weekends, but as a Museum Educator I have a flexible schedule and am usually done for the day before 4pm. I find the time because I have to. If I don’t draw or work on my art for more than a few days I feel physically uncomfortable and anxious – the need to work (or “get the drawings out of me”) is somewhere between an artistic duty and obsession/addiction.

I listen to music, podcasts, radio, movies most of the time when I work. I know artists who feel this influences their output, but for me it’s more of a distraction/stimulus during hours of slow, steady drawing – it keeps me grounded in a way, so I don’t “drift off” mentally or emotionally. For the most part I like to work to more atmospheric, experimental music like Flying Lotus or Nicolas Jaar – but I have a soft spot for singer/songwriters like Townes van Zandt and Elliott Smith (anything that’s emotionally raw and evocative).

I drink a lot of coffee, but I don’t need that much to paint with, a little bit goes a long way. Maybe 2 cups for all of The Deep End, a lot more for drinking.

Lavers: Are you comfortable with your animations being described as ‘retro’ or ‘analog’? – Is there a way of describing this feel that your animations have that you are comfortable with and if so what adjective would you use?

Fried: I’m okay with the term ‘retro.’ But I see it more of as a kind of retro-futurism – as if the work is from the distant past and future at the same time. Essentially something “timeless or universal” versus something “temporary and specific.” I often come back to the term ‘Raw’ to describe what I’m going for – and I think I’m part of the larger trend of ‘lo-fi aesthetics’ that goes back to 80s Punk. I could make the case that my work acts as an antidote or antithesis to the glut of slick, computer generated animations coming out today. One might even describe American culture today as slick and computer generated – and my work as some sort of human, hand-made rebellion against it.

Lavers: Which visual artists do you like best - what work moves you – interests you, inspires you, influences you?

Fried: God, that would be a long list – I was educated as an Art Historian and work for a major museum – I’m as influenced/inspired by Ancient Egyptian tombs as Contemporary Painting. Crumb’s hyper-detailed ink drawings are certainly an influence on my specific style – I would also add Philip Guston and James Ensor as major influences. And even though it seems like such a cliché today – I still learn from Picasso’s work all the time, the guy’s out of control. And although I dislike him personally, I have to mention William Kentridge as a predecessor to what I do.

Lavers: You describe your animations as moving paintings – why do you position your work in relation to painting rather than comic book artists like Robert Crumb?

Fried: I know a lot of people refer to me as an illustrator, but I’ll always see myself as a painter. My work is firmly rooted in the history of Fine Art, and my work isn’t really going for a message/narrative through images, but rather the images are the message. I see my works as “objects of contemplation” in the same way someone would approach a painting or sculpture.

Also, this body of work came out of my painting and drawing practice; I have always layered and reworked my images for weeks. Eventually I realized I was more interested in the “evolution” of the image than any “final state”. So the animations aren’t that different from what I’ve always done; I just didn’t “see them” until I began recording the process.

Lavers: Are there any animators that have inspired you?

Fried: I don’t really look at other animators for inspiration that much – but some noteworthy contemporaries would be BLU and Allison Schulnik – I think they’re doing amazing work. I have mixed reactions to Cyriak’s work, but he’s probably getting the most attention of any experimental animator out there right know and clearly works his ass off. Folks like Julia Pott and Jordan Bruner do great stuff too – but their work is a bit too cute and twee for my tastes.

Lavers: Is there any fiction that has influenced your work, any ideas you see yourself exploring through your work, any theoretical writers you have read that have sparked ideas with you?

Fried: Again, too many to list. But for fiction, Kafka has perhaps had the most profound influence on my work – I’m a huge fan. The writings of Jung and Joseph Campbell are also very important to me. I believe in the collective unconscious and all the symbolism and imagery in my work stem from this belief. I’m not representing one culture or time in my work, but a more holistic view of the human experience.

I wouldn’t describe myself as religious, but there’s definitely a link to the Deconstructionists in this line of thought. There’s a big trend around the world toward personal spirituality over organized or dogmatic belief systems and I think is evident in my work. I think this trend is one of the major shifts in human culture that defines the era we’re living through right now.

Lavers: Do you see your work as being ideas driven? Or do you see your work as evolving through the process of doing it and more connected with process and the materials you are working with and that it kind of develops itself through doing it.

Fried: Both. The work is not really preplanned, so it does become itself through the process of making. But the “ideas” are always in the background. I think if you’re being honest as an artist, the work tells you what’s next as much as you tell it. I fundamentally believe art-making should be a “discovery” process, otherwise I have no interest. I want to learn something new or follow some unknown path, rather than just executing a plan.

Lavers: Where do you see your work going in the next few years? Or will you just let the process drive you?

Fried: I’m just going to continue on the path that I’m on and see where it takes me. I don’t plan on stopping film-making anytime soon. Just like painting or songwriting, I think the value and insights of my individual films grow as I add more to the body of work. I am exhibiting regularly, but the dream would be a solo museum show where each film is looped on large screens in small viewing rooms in proximity to each other. That way the totality of my expression can truly be witnessed.

The world of online video is developing so rapidly, I can’t really imagine what it will be like in the next few years. But I look forward to the innovations that will lead to new and better ways of distributing and viewing my work. And I look forward to how these new technologies will lead to the greater democratization of the art world in general.

Вчера вечером я пошла посмотреть оригинальную арт выставку Зимбабве в поддержку Camba некоммерческой организации, которая предоставляет услуги, соединяющие людей с возможностями для повышения их качества жизни.

Я познакомилась с замечательными людьми, которые сделали замечательные работы, они также рассказывали истории о помощи афганским женщинам иммигрантам здесь в изучении английского языка для поиска работы и помощи семье. Я встретила Джоану М. Оплустил, исполнительного директора Camba, она считает, что есть больше чем несколько проблем в предоставлении отдельным лицам и семьям знаний, инструментов и ресурсов, необходимых для достижения самодостаточности, помогая внести свой вклад в благополучие своих общин.

Скульптуры были удивительными, изготовленные из различных камней. Каждый передал определенное сообщение посетителям. Большинство из них были о людях и о том как они связаны друг с другом духовно. Они представляют собой послание дружбы, уважения, изображенные в очень простой, но настолько значимой фигуре.

В настоящее время моя подруга Роя Махбуб которая была выбрана в 2013 TIME 100 находится в Калифорнии и замечательно проводит время, встречаясь со многими влиятельными людьми в индустрии высоких технологий, как Шерил Сандберг Главный операционный директор Facebook, Джек Дорси и Биз Стоун из Twitter.

Это все о том, как мы можем привлечь афганских женщин в сферу образования и в дальнейшем в индустрию высоких технологий. Осуществляя онлайн-образовательный проект "Examer" в школах Афганистана и подключая Афганских девочек к социальным и цифровым медиа, это и будет первым первый шаг в направлении оказания помощи женщинам в развивающихся странах, чтобы быть более активными в причастности к техническим аспектам.

Несколько дней назад я был приглашен для обсуждения за круглым столом кампанию по Сохранению борьбы в Олимпийских играх. Спорное решение МОК о возможности исключить Борьбу с летних Олимпийских игр преследует мои мысли. В ходе встречи, несколько человек выступили с инициативой поднять Борьбу на более интересный и звездный уровень, подключив его в дальнейшем к профессионалам в мире ММА и UFC, и управляя им на той же основе, что и профессиональные спортивные команды, такие как НХЛ и НБА .

Моя позиция была другой. Я предложил серьезное развитие образовательных ценностей борьбы. Мое предложение - вооружить тренеров и спортсменов средствами массовой информации, такими как блоги, статьи, социальные медиа и видео-продукции, документировав важность борьбы для умственного и физического развития спортсменов всех возрастов, влияние на их экономический и образовательный уровень, и местоположение, особенно в развивающихся странах и менее богатых регионах.

Naples in New York – Restaurant PizzArte

If you’re looking for a taste of Naples in the city of New York, then you must stop at PizzArte.

In Manhattan there’s finally a restaurant devoted to the tradition of Neapolitan cuisine. The owners Bruno Cilio and Dario Cipollaro de l’Ero, one a lawyer, the other a fashion executive, have in common the love for the splendid city of Naples and an indomitable passion for food. PizzArte offers not only memorable pizzas, but has a sophisticated menu that includes Neapolitan delicacies, and so is becoming the go-to place to enjoy a cuisine that has become rare in NYC. I started my experience tasting Polpettine Passi & Pinoli (home-style Neapolitan Italian meatballs with pine nuts and raisins), soft but with a nice consistency; without being dry as often happens when you eat meatballs, they had a slightly spicy taste accompanied by an aftertaste of honey, thanks to the sweetness of raisins that acts (I don’t understand the choice of “master’) as a master in a fresh tomato sauce.

I could not pass up the traditional Eggplant Parmigiana with fresh mozzarella imported from Italy. The presentation of this small “tart” naturally communicates its pleasant taste with eggplant sliced thin as prosciutto, making it lighter, not greasy, so that you can appreciate the precise equilibrium between the freshly made tomato sauce and mozzarella.

It’s sweetness, like puff pastry makes it even a possible choice for dessert. For a first course, I recommend I Paccheri al Baccala (tube shaped pasta with cod fish in a cherry tomato sauce with Gaeta olives and capers from Sicily) as a must try. You will not find this elaborate and traditional dish in Italian restaurants. I Paccheri are cooked to perfection, velvety with a light sauce of cherry tomatoes, and the taste of cod fish is delicate, never bitter, softened by the tenderness of capers.

The whole wheat Fettuccine with chestnuts, porcini mushrooms, sausage and pecorino cheese is a dish that combined together make for an excellent dish, typical of Italian homemade traditional cuisine. The presentation of the dish is superb, and the match of the mushrooms with chestnut is a perfect marriage, just like sausage and pecorino cheese. As an entreé I had Polpo alla Griglia (grilled Mediterranean octopus with olives, lemon dressing and mashed potatoes), the nice sized plate was very well presented and the delicacy and softness of the octopus didn’t require the use of a knife; just a fork was sufficient. It wasn’t greasy or mushy nor did I feel the slippery texture that octopus skin sometimes can have.

The flavor brought me back to a Sicilian summer, eating on the beach in the local fish restaurant. If you’re vegetarian or vegan, the variety of vegetables offered like Friarielli (broccoli rabe with garlic and hot pepper) or Zucchine alla Scapece (with mint and garlic) or Melanzane with cherry tomatoes and basil, are all exquisite and you can definitely eat a full plate as an entrée. The restaurant décor is eclectic; every two months there are new art works exposed featuring new upcoming international artists. This makes PizzArte not just an excellent and unique Neapolitan restaurant in the heart of Manhattan but also a place to look at new interesting art. After all food is an art and the two go well together.

The deadline for open submissions to the International Fashion Film Awards @ LJFFF is fast approaching. June 13, 2013 is your last day to submit your work to festival producer Fred Sweet. The event for which I'm honored to be part of the judging panel has changed a bit in its format from last years La Jolla Fashion Film Festival.

There continues to be the main awards such as best picture, director, etc. but there will also be an expansion of the awards to focus on the other key aspects of production. “From now on the brilliant work done by makeup artists, hairstylists, art directors, musicians, wardrobe stylists, writers, and others will be nominated and have the opportunity to win awards. Roya Mahboob: A Role Model for Women in Afghanistan

A recent article on the Huffington Post describes Roya Mahboob’s reaction to being listed in Time Magazine's list of the 100 Most Influential People in the World and how she achieved the recognition.

As the 25-year-old co-founder and CEO of IT development firm Afghan Citadel Software Company, Mahboob is recognized as one of Afghanistan’s top entrepreneurs. Her work in the company has resulted in Internet classrooms being built across the country, which allows women and children to learn how to use the Internet and become financially independent.

According to the article, Mahboob thought it was a mistake. She said:

"At first when I saw the email I didn't believe it. But then I was so happy and honored by this award."

ACSC develops databases and software for government ministries, private companies and NATO. Mahboob employs 25 people—18 of whom are women—and has faced death threats throughout her fight for women’s empowerment due to Afghanistan’s conservative society. Despite this, Mahboob’s goal is to change women’s lives in Afghanistan and correct stereotypes about life there.

Her company has built eight classrooms so far in Herat, connecting 35,000 girls through an educational and interactive social platform called Examer, which uses a micro scholarship payment system that was developed by Mahboob and her partners. This system helps women work from home while being socially connected to other women who share the same interests.

Mahboob commented on how her program was initially perceived by other people. She said:

“When some parents heard about Facebook they thought we are trying to find a boyfriend for their girls, to watch bad movies and get them to be independent against the family… I want to be a role model for females to know they can start their own business and nothing should stop them."

To help Afghan women communicate with each other, Mahboob also founded a blog and video site in 2011 called Women's Annex in partnership with film distribution site Film Annex. The platform is managed by Afghan woman and allows other women to share their stories, blogs, and videos with each other, as well as offering blogs about business, education, sports, and an array of other topics. Mahboob has also teamed up with Film Annex to create a WebTV called the Afghan Development Web TV, which shows the “new face” of Afghanistan through documentaries.

Film Review: Cannes 2013: Paul Wright’s FOR THOSE IN PERIL

There is something about waves on film that is a crashing bore. When a movie opens with a shot of the tide coming in, my eyes start to close. It is the sound that does it, powerful, rhythmic, but one of the few examples of natural audio that does not appear to be made for the purpose of communication; wind whistling through trees, or the thrust of a tornado are others. To me it is soporific, like the ticking of an alarm clock that you cannot sleep without. To others, the sound of the sea’s movement invites interpretation, encouraging those enraptured by it, the natural conspiracy theorists, to create their own mythology. Could there be a devil underneath the water that snatches people and takes them prisoner? Highly unlikely! Yet it is this fantasy that grips Aaron (George Mackay), the seventeen-year old protagonist of Paul Wright’s debut feature, FOR THOSE IN PERIL. Aaron has lost his older brother, Michael in an accident at sea. He was with him at the time. The exact details aren’t described, but there are people in the small fishing village where Aaron lives who reckon that he should not have come back. If you think that’s a bit harsh, well, it is. You see, Aaron is what we would uncharitably call a special needs kid. He lived in his brother’s shadow. When he was bothered by bullies, his brother sorted it out. Aaron didn’t cultivate his own interests, but lived instead with and through his brother. Only his brother got a girlfriend, Jane (Nichola Burley). Aaron always hung around them, surplus to requirements. He doesn’t love Jane; he just wants his brother. After all, the boys don’t have a father. Some would say that to restore equilibrium, Jane should have gone from the picture. But life does not do equilibrium. It does the unexpected. It took Michael. Aaron wants him back. He’s convinced that Michael is trapped at the bottom of the sea. The body hasn’t been recovered. His fate is unresolved. Small fishing villages don’t do grief counselling. In fact, the film is notable for the absence of consoling authority figures, those who have transcended life’s cruel twists, who can put themselves in the head space of the aggrieved and pull them back to their feet. Aaron finds some solace talking to Jane. He tells her that he can bring him back. But Jane is grieving too. In the film’s most wrenching scene, she asks Aaron if she is beautiful and whether she loves, to be a substitute. Here are two people utterly wrong for each other, neither able to give what the other wants. From an extremely unpromising opening, which mixes black and white with colour – the film features footage of the two brothers playing as kids, as if photographed on Super 8, and slightly more plausible mobile phone camera footage, where playing to the lens is built into the aesthetic – it gradually assumes Aaron’s twisted subjectivity. We watch in horror as he play fights with a younger boy and almost strangles him – he is not used to being the stronger of the two in a wrestling match. We see him make his raft and go after the sea monster. We regard his taking of another boy as a potential sacrifice to the beast – give a life, get a life. Fortunately, his victim gets away and Aaron is an extraordinary image but one that emphasises his feral nature, ends up in a fishing net. Finally, he attempts to turn himself into a Merman. He cuts one side of his neck with a knife, then the other, crudely trying to create gills. In another place he would have been sectioned for his potential to cause harm. In this movie, he volunteers to go for treatment, but doesn’t get there. Then there’s the ending. To say it is bold and non-naturalistic is an understatement. It is not what you expect. What I took most from the film was a moral about storytelling. You don’t tell your kids a legend about a sea monster and not know what it means. Myths are supposed to teach morality, to make you afraid and keep your safe, or at least obey society’s rules. The invented legend that is part Pied Piper part Loch Ness monster does not serve any obvious purpose. It does not make reality easier to understand as proper myths do; it is a mash-up. That said, after a truly yawn inducing opening in which I feared the worst, the drama took hold. I wanted to know where Aaron’s madness would take him. Wright’s film is built on rocky foundations, though the grief, helplessness and determination of the central character pull you through. The performances are naturalistic, the final scene enigmatic. It makes a change for mimetic documentary style story-telling – at one point it suggests THE WICKER MAN – but it does not go the full MADAGASCAR SKIN. Does anyone remember Chris Newby?

Thinking While Performing

Having been playing guitar for the band "Hard Soul" for almost 6 months now I had to do a piece on some of the many intangible subtleties that go with being in a gigging band. Last night we played a killer set in Oneonta, NY. While watching the footage from the show I began texting back and forth with the other members of the band to see what their take on the gig was. Everyone was very pleased with our performance but it was interesting to hear what the other band mates were thinking about DURING the show.

Specifically, our keyboard player Erin Grimm was constantly concerned about the volume level of her instrument and making sure she was balanced with the rest of the band. I was constantly thinking about how to improve my stage presence and make the band more enjoyable to watch. Our drummer Justin Cheever from time to time tosses in slight variations on songs to keep us on our toes and break up the mundane of playing songs we perform over and over again. It always puts a smile on our faces. Our bass player for the show Sean Murphy learned a cover song we did in the middle of our set WHILE ON STAGE. Goes without saying one of the things he was thinking about. Last but not least I can only imagine what lead singer/guitar player/frontman Johnny Salka is thinking about. Between balancing sound, playing, singing, cueing the rest of the band, and all of the other multitasking he does, there probably isn't an un-preoccupied moment that goes by in that dude's head.

Still, everyone hides what their thinking about very well to consistently put on a great show. Trading slaps & head butts, high fives & smiles the band has fun doing what it's doing and will continue to do so in the many shows to come. Next up, Hard Soul will play the SPAC Rock 'n Run this Sunday to provide quality music for all of the participants.

USAID helps Afghan Girls in Education and Economy to be empowered

Today I read an article about USAID's recent activity on training and supporting small private sectors by means of Afghanistan Workforce Development Program (AWDP). The purpose of this program is to give grants to providers of business, technical and vocational education. The grantees are required to create bespoke courses for workers in line with the needs articulated by their private sector employers.

The story is about a 22 year old Afghan girl "Zoya Hemat" who is a client assistant at a private bank in Kabul. Working in a bank and dealing with many customers who have many questions is difficult specially for girls to communicate with men in a traditional society.

Women can play a key role for the development of a society. Right now in many parts of the world women are taking decision by themselves about their future, education, job and any other plans. For a developing country like Afghanistan that experienced many conflicts and destruction and it leads to financial crisis, entrepreneurship can be a good solution for women to create job for other women and being more supportive. However it is sometimes challenging for women in Afghanistan to make a balance between their work and family because traditions and customs in Afghanistan are strongly connected with people's life.

The fact is that now many doors are opened for women to start their businesses faster and more efficient and this is the result of social and digital media's impact.

If we look at the educational procedures in Afghanistan compare to decades ago, it has a significant improvement specially in case of accessing new technology which is Internet and digital media, although these improvements are related to universities in big cities but it had a huge impact on the learning process of students.

How about those women that beside being a student in the university they are mother of children and have to take care of home also, new technology gives this opportunity for women to start following up their work at home accessing the most usable technology "Internet ".

However we have creative and supportive ideas where they provide safe and secure environment for women to spend time together and share their ideas like First Women's Internet Cafe in Kabul.

Women are the main role players in each society, ignoring them and not giving them the chance to be active will never end up with the good result.

About Art Direction - Part 2

Ok, a few days I told you about how I work making the art direction of a movie, now I just want to share two more things about our last work "Hambre" (Hungry). In one side I want to show you one of the pages of the script with the marks that I comment in the last post, there you can see some circle marks, some yellow stripes, pink stripes and some notes, I used to make that to pick and solve everything that is in the script to see it, but also I write some notes to remind that we need to define some things that aren´t in the script, but that we need to create or find.

And in the other side, I want to share you some making of images where you are going to be able to see our work from the art direction area(make up, locations, dressing, etc). Also I´m attaching some pre-production document images to show you how we start one by one picking each element of a movie, from a single clothe to an entire room.

As a traditional country, women in Afghanistan always have faced with challenges and problems on their way towards being more active and educated. But during the recent decade after Taliban regime a lot of women achieved numerous success and established their own businesses to help other Afghan women.

Roya Mahboob and her partners in FilmAnnex are going to give this opportunity for Afghan girls at schools to change their future and take steps towards supporting and empowering women in developing countries where the start point is Afghanistan.

The Huffington Post recently published an article about her outstanding and courageous activities in Afghanistan to help and support women. She mentioned the importance of using social and digital media and the recent technology and its influences on people's lives specially Afghan women who spent their darkest time during Taliban. She said: "These young women are becoming more independent and on social media they have more confidence to talk openly about the things they want. They are making their own community of friends online. And with social media and target marketing they will get their financial freedom and independence"

I found the following image very interesting and meaningful specially in case of sustainable education and building the update educational system in developing countries.

Education is the bough which is like a bridge that connects the root to the leaves and branches which represents the important role of education. Education can lead to a sustainable development in the societies when the teaching and learning procedures are not only a ways to get more knowledge but to connect you to the whole world and give you the ability to improve your communication skills.

Roya Mahboob in her recent trip to California met many thought leaders in technology. One of the great achievement of her trip is to be listed among the investors in Jelly HQ whom are Biz Stone, Co-Founder and CEO Jelly Industries, Inc. Cannes 2013: BLIND DETECTIVE - Do I look like I enjoyed it?

This is me at 2:45am on Monday 20 May inside the Grand Palais having just watched the World Premiere screening of Johnnie To's BLIND DETECTIVE at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. Yes, I actually thought tenue de soiree meant checked shirts.

To say that BLIND DETECTIVE is the worst film I have ever seen in a major festival is an understatement. It is an embarrassment, with lacklustre plotting and offensive so called humour based around self-harm and people with weight issues. I am not entirely sure what Andy Lau was doing in the film. Self-harm is what this'll do to all concerned.

BLIND DETECTIVE is a very broad comedy in which Johnston (Andy Lau) is hired by a wealthy female colleague to find out what happened to a childhood pal, Maggie. Chefs and taxi drivers play a prominent part. Johnston is blind to the fact that the woman loves him. Instead, he keeps describing her as 'looking like a Susan', a by-word for a plain-looking colleague.

Of course, she is fantastically attractive but Johnston does not know that. Instead, he ritualistically humiliates her by getting her to act out scenarios involving Maggie and girls like her who may be the victims of a psychopathic killer.

Food, vomiting, dancing and treading on toes are the sources of whatever chuckles To and his four screenwriters hoped to elicit. A steady stream of appropriately dressed viewers headed for the exits.

Noone booed the movie - it was screened out of competition and no one was pretending it was art. But the enthusiastic cheers that greeted each of the six logos as the film began - or rather didn't - soon gave way to silence.

BLIND DETECTIVE was the fifth film I had seen in a twelve and a half hour viewing day, which began with FOR THOSE IN PERIL (UK. Director: Paul Wright) at 2:00pm on 19 May and continued with THE SELFISH GIANT (UK. Director Clio Barnard) at 5:00pm, MONSOON SHOOTOUT (India, Director: Amit Kumar) at 7:00pm, BLUE RUIN (US, Director Jeremy Saulnier) at 10:00pm and finally BLIND DETECTIVE at half-past midnight. Luckily I brought sandwiches.

Of the bunch, I cannot recommend BLUE RUIN more highly, a thriller about a vagrant who discovers that his parents' murderer has been released from prison and decides to take pro-active action. Twists follow. It is Jeremy Saulnier's second film after 2007's MURDER PARTY. He wanted to make a second film to re-define himself as a filmmaker. He's done that!

Look Who's Joining "Transformers 4!"

Michael Bay and Paramount Pictures have announced that Chinese actress, Li Bingbing ("Resident Evil: Retribution") has been cast in "Transformers 4." The actress joins Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, Kelsey Grammer, Jack Reynor, Nicola Peltz and Sophia Myles in the fourth installment in the hit series of movies based on the best-selling Hasbro toyline. Paramount Pictures will release the film on June 27th, 2014.

“I am excited to have Li Bingbing join our cast and to be shooting portions of the movie in her native China. I have always aspired to work with the best actors and this cast is especially exciting now with the addition of Li,” said Michael Bay.

In her native country of China, Li has many hits including the Tsui Hark-directed "Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame" and "1911." In America, Li has starred in "Resident Evil: Retribution," "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan," and "Forbidden Kingdom." She was recently named Variety's "Asian Star of the Year."

Paramount, China Movie Channel and Jiaflix Enterprises announced this past April a Cooperation Agreement regarding the production of “TRANSFORMERS 4” in China. Under the agreement, China Movie Channel, under the State Administration of Radio Film and Television (SARFT), will cooperate with Paramount in broad-based support of the production of the film in China. “TRANSFORMERS 4” is expected to be released in China on or about June 27, 2014. The parties also intend to cooperate in a number of other areas related to “TRANSFORMERS 4,” including the selection of filming sites within China, theatrical promotion, and possible post-production activities in China as well as casting of Chinese actors and actresses in the film.

This agreement represents the first time that China Movie Channel will work with a western studio in the production of a major motion picture.

“We are delighted to see Ms. Li Bingbing being selected for a major role in ‘TRANSFORMERS 4,’ a very successful global film franchise,” said Yan Xiaoming, Chairman of China Movie Channel. “Ms. Li is an excellent and famous Chinese actress with many fans in China. Who's In Talks for "Star Wars 7?"

Jonathan Rhys Meyers is supposedly in talks to star in "Star Wars: Episode VII" according to our friends at Latino Review. Meyers could be the first actor to join the cast alongside, possibly, Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher. J.J. Abrams is directing the new "Star Wars" sequel, fresh from creating "Star Trek Into Darkness."

Meyers has worked with Abrams before in "Mission: Impossible III." And lest you doubt Latino Review, the site has a pretty good track record for breaking movie news, like how they revealed the real identity of the "Star Trek Into Darkness" villain, long before it was revealed.

"Star Trek" On Top...But Not That Much, And Yes Old Sport, "The Great Gatsby" Beat "Star Trek" and "Iron Man 3" Overseas!

So the biggest question this past weekend in Hollywood -- what happened to "Star Trek Into Darkness?" Paramount, the studio behind the latest "Star Trek" saga, predicted, really hoped, that "Star Trek Into Darkness" would open at $100 million. But alas, the latest J.J. Abrams film under-performed at just $84.1 million, and that's including the Wednesday midnight screenings and the hefty IMAX price-tag. Without those, "Star Trek Into Darkness" $70.6 million domestic and $40 million international.

That was well below the first J.J. Abrams-directed "Star Trek" released in 2009 which opened with $75.2 million. Still, it's enough to bring down "Iron Man 3" which fell to No. 2 with $35.2 million domestic and $40.2 million international.

Sure, "Star Trek Into Darkness" and "Iron Man 3" made gazillions of dollars overseas but they're no match for Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby" which made $42.1 million overseas ahead of the science fiction films. Domestically, "The Great Gatsby" was sitting pretty at No. 3 with $23.4 million. Yup old sport, "The Great Gatsby" is a hit!

Here's the estimated Top 10 Box-Office Films for weekend of May 17th:

1. "Star Trek: Into Darkness," $70.6 million ($40 million international).

2. "Iron Man 3," $35.2 million ($40.2 million international).

Afghani food Kookoo (Kuku)-Ye Sabzi

finely chopped fresh coriander (cilantro)
1 cup chopped scallion, including green parts
1 tablespoon shelled walnuts, roughly chopped
1 cup shredded spinach leaves
1 tablespoon barberries (original recipe specified dried cranberries)
1 tablespoon self-rising flour (I added 1/4 teaspoon of baking powder to 1 tablespoon of flour)
10 eggs
1/8 teaspoon saffron thread
salt & freshly ground black pepper
3 -4 tablespoons cooking oil (I used grape seed oil)

Directions:

In a large bowl, toss chopped herbs, scallions, half of the walnuts, spinach, half of the barberries, and flour.

In another bowl, whisk eggs with saffron and season with salt and pepper.

Heat oil in a large, nonstick frying pan over medium heat.

When oil is hot, slowly pour in egg mixture, stirring in herb mixture into the center of the egg mixture.

Shake to loosen base, reduce heat to medium-low, cover loosely, and leave to cook very gently for 5-6 minutes (Reminder: if the heat is too high, eggs may become leathery.) As omelet cooks, shake to loosen base, and neaten sides with a spatula to build up a deep, straight edge.

When the top looks set, invert a large plate over the pan and flip the whole pan over so the omelet ends up on the plate, cooked side up.

Slip omelet back in pan for another 2-3 to cook other side (you may need a little more oil). When it feels firm, slide it out onto its plate or flip it again as done in Step #6; it will set a little more as it cools.

Serve warm or "at the temperature of a spring evening in the desert.".

I garnished the omelet with sprigs of parsley, the remaining barberries and walnuts. A side of strained yogurt was also served as a garnish. To complete the menu I made a pot of simple Persian steamed rice
