Movie Title: 2011 Women's Sabre National Championships

Movie Language: English

Movie Length: 4 minutes

Movie Synopsis:
Daria Schneider became the first women’s sabre fencer from the NYAC to win a National Championships.

Schneider defeated two of her 2010 Senior World Teammates to win her first Division I National title.

After a 15-5 win over 2010 Junior World Team member Nicole Glon in the quarterfinals, Schneider faced Ibtihaj Muhammad, one of the top 16 fencers in the world.

Schneider and Muhammad were tied at three touches, but once Schneider scored the fourth, she didn’t look back, building to an 8-4 lead before winning the match, 15-8.

In the finals, Schneider faced Dagmara Wozniak. With just a year separating 22-year-old Schneider from her opponent, she said that the two had fenced often at not just the senior domestic and international levels, but at the junior and cadet ranks as well.

“I’ve been competing with Daga since I was 14 and we were just saying, especially in cadets, how we would constantly be in the gold medal bout together and sometimes she would win, sometimes I would win. We’re so used to it now,” Schneider said. “We just love each other so much as friends that whatever was going to happen on the strip would stay on the strip. Of course it’s hard because there’s so much pressure, but we understand each other’s situations, so I think we have a lot of respect for each other and what we’re all doing. “

Schneider took an early four-point lead against Wozniak who showed her experience level in the sport as she came back to tie the bout at 12.

“I knew I just had to trust my instincts and trust my body and let all the hard work and training really come through for me,” Schneider said. “In those last minutes where you’re all alone and you can’t get any last-minute advice from your coach, you just have to trust yourself.”

Schneider scored the next two touches to take the lead at 14-12 before winning the bout, 15-13.

“The last two bouts were against really tough opponents, so I was really proud of myself that I was able to win those bouts and show really good fencing,” said Schneider. “It feels pretty awesome. It’s my first time winning a senior competition. I’ve won a lot of cadet and junior NACs, but this is my first senior, so it feels pretty good.”

Movie Length:

Movie Synopsis:
1984 Olympics in Fencing in Men's Saber. This is the apocryphal Olympic footage from Los Angeles, 1984, which features the United State's Peter Westbrook winning the Bronze Medal. It also contains the epic 12-11 bout where France's Lamour won the Gold versus Italy's Marin. A lot has changed with sabre since 1984 -- no more crossovers and fleches, for one. But this is also pre-electric; the referees (one director and four side judges) are wearing bow-ties. Bouts are fenced to 10, and when a touch is scored, it's scored against a fencer: A 10-5 score means the fencer with 10 has lost. Fencers get a one-meter warning (and use it) when they reach the end of the strip. Fencers change sides at 5 touches. After a series of simultaneous actions, priority is assigned via a flipped coin. t was a different world back then -- one foot seemingly still on the Titanic, when semi-Edwardian dinosaurs still dressed expensively to attend sporting events. But nowhere is the "old way" more clear than with the formalized tactics of the fencers.
This video comes from <a href="http://www.FencingWebTV.com"target="_blank">fencingwebtv.com

Movie Language: English

Movie Length: 118 mins

Movie Synopsis:
1988 Olympics Fencing Men's Epee Final 8. Before the there was a unified Germany, before the collapse of Soviet Union, there was Seoul 1988. The 1984 Olympics did not feature Soviet Union and its 13 Communist allies (Romania was the only Warsaw Pact country to attend). Without the Democratic Republic of Germany and Soviet Union the 1984 Olympics were the most American dominated Olympics in the past 80 years. As proof of the strength and power of the so-called Eastern Block is Seoul 1988. Based on the finals initial seeding the following fencers comprise the top 8:
1. Kuehnemund, T GDR – Second in World Cup standings 1988
2. Chouvalov Andrey URS 1987 World Champion
3. Bergstrom Jerri SWE Made finals in 1985 and 1986
4. Rezdnichenko, Vladimir URS Team Champion in 1987 (for USSR, and later would also win for Germany)
5. Riboud Philippe FRA First in World Cup 1986, 3rd in 1984, and 3rd in 1980 Olympics
6. Schmitt, Arndt FRG First in World Cups 1987
7. Martin Brill NZL First in the Oceanic Dome Championships 1981
8. Cuomo, Sandro ITA 3rd in the World cups of 1985, would also be part of the Team that took gold in 1996

Most Olympic finals tend to be mixes of fencers with lots of talent, experience and world class expertise, along with young, and relatively unknown fencers who make their spot by pure luck and determination. Seoul 1988 does not conform to those statistics, almost all the fencers in the finals were strong well known and experienced. In hindsight anyone one of them could have taken the gold, silver or bronze, as this DVD and my introduction will show.

Movie Synopsis:
1989 Fencing World Championships Men's Epee Team. This video is a battle between the Italian and West Germans. Some of the current Italian top guns are in their early years on this video (Cuomo, Mazoni). The West Germans have Elmor Borman and crew. What should have been a landslide victory from the West Germans becomes as a surprise as the Italians take a 3-0 lead before Borman beats Mazoni 5-4 to put the West Germans on the scoreboard. The Germans fight back, but the determination from the Italians is overwhelming! All in all, great epee matches with a lot of different camera angles. You also get 8 of the best epee fencers of this era fighting it out between each other.
This video comes from <a href="http://www.FencingWebTV.com"target="_blank">fencingwebtv.com

Movie Language: English

Movie Length: 86 mins

Movie Synopsis:
1989 Fencing Men's Foil Team World Championships. The Federal Republic of Germany faces off against the incumbent World Champions, the Soviet Union. Woohoo! Nice surprise for your commentator. The inestimable Alexander Romankov (URS) faces off against Mathias Gey (FRG). You may remember Romankov from the 1988 Seoul Olympics as "The Old Guy with the Bronze Medal", described as The Century's Greatest Fencer. Here he is, approaching 40. Another big treat! Sergei Golubitski (URS) of the Ukraine makes an appearence against Weidner in this epic conflict, perhaps being rotated in for Koretski after Koretski's terminal performance against Endres. Golubitski is to Romankov as Christian Slater is to Jack Nicholson (and when Golubitski's weapon is loose, Romankov brings the wrench). The sixteenth bout pits Schevtchenkov against Koch. Whoever wins the next bout wins the match. When there's a lot on the line, fencers aren't afraid to burn energy like mad. Every movement is focused and very serious, there is no "feeling out" the opponent. Everything that doesn't land is a deadly risk to victory. For all his intensity, Koch finds it incredibly difficult to land the point on the reed-like Schevtchenkov. Schevtchenkov, who looks like he's 6'6", capitalizes on his reach.
This video comes from <a href="http://www.FencingWebTV.com"target="_blank">fencingwebtv.com

Movie Title: 2004 Fencing Budapest Men's Epee

Movie Language: English

Movie Length: 35 mins

Movie Synopsis:
2004 Fencing world cup in Bupadest, Hungary in Men's Epee. The fencers taking in the final of this world cup are. Kolobkov RUS, Schmid GER, Boczko HUN, Jan FRA, Fischer SUI, Strigel GER, Martinelli ITA, and Fernandez VEN. Each bout is different in that it allows the viewer to see difficulties presented by fencing a particular opponent and the way each fencer tries to overcome them. For example in the first bout Schmid GER, fences Strigel GER through out the bout both fencers tend to be very reluctant to attack, as the bout progressed the fencers got used to their opponents patterns of attack, to the point that any attempt for an attack is met with a placed counter attack giving a double touch or a touch in the opponents favor. At 13-13 with Strigel GER having the won coin toss, the bout becomes amazing as Schmid GER now has to raise his level of preparation to overcome Strigel’s counter attack. As both fencers jump in one place, Schmid does a complex patter of beats from 4 to 2 to 6, which Strigel ignores, by just keeping distance, it is at this time when Strigel firmly believes and follows this pattern with no reaction, does Schmid place an explosive attack following the small almost passive beat through 4. This preparation for an attack seems to be the most important thing in this World Cup; while Schmid gets away with a straight fleche in this last touch, Boczko HUN works much better with an attack with a disengage. In his bout against Martinelli ITA, who seems to be much involved with taking the parry 6, Boczko works very hard not to end up in Martinelli 6 by counter attacking and disengaging. The result? Martinelli cannot adapt, the reflex for the 6 is so strong that irregardless of score and situation his hand makes this wide circle opening his body for attack, Boczko must have landed at least 5 touches in this manner.

Then we have Kolobkov, the “Tsar” of Epee, who unlike Schmid or Boczko, does not do his fleches straight on attack or with disengage, but rather on preparation; the speed and the finesse which they are executed with leave a feeling of “shock and awe” not once do Boczko and Fernandez simply shake their heads in distress for in all honesty they are doing the correct motions, but Kolobkov is simply too fast to overcome.

Finally a curious “what-if” of the DVD is the Fischer SUI vs. Jan FRA bout. Many fencing experts following the 2000 Olympics have often perceived Fischer SUI to be a toxic physical fencer on the strip, and one may wonder if this judgment of him had the necessary effect of forcing the referee to give him a red for corps a corps. The situation would not have been as important had it not been 14-14 in the additional minute, with Fischer winning the priority with a yellow card for a previous offense. Fischer known for his straight fast fleches, executes this one, ten seconds into the minute, being parried he remises, lands the touch, collides with Jan and falls off the strip. The referee gives red, Fischer loses, but if one is to slow down the DVD play to .5x you can clearly see the touch is made before any body contact, guess Jan FRA is happy there’s no instant replay in fencing.

This video comes from <a href="http://www.FencingWebTV.com"target="_blank">fencingwebtv.com

Movie Synopsis:
Fencing 1988 Olympics Women's Foil team event. Federal Republic of Germany versus Italy.

FRGermany: Sabine Bau (1988 Silver Medal winner), Anja Fichtel (1998 Gold Medal winner), Zita Funkenhauser (1988 Bronze Medal winner), Annette Klug, Christiane Weber. Italy: F. Bortolozzi, A. Gandolfi, Lucia Traversa, D. Vaccaroni, Margarita Zalaffi.

You'll be reminded by the wild cheering that the late 80's was a new high for German fencing. They were trouncing everybody with new, unorthodox flicks and marching time attacks. There's a mystique about the German team, so frightfully effective, and the crowd loves them. Sabine Bau used to get marriage proposals in the mail from admirers.

Italy comes on strong in the first bout, with Germany down 4-1, and Bau must claw her way back up. This team match is following 1988 rules -- sets of short, 5 touch bouts where the score doesn't accrue. The Germans pull ahead early in the match... but this only has the effect of firing the Italians up.

The Italians eventually reverse their win/loss ratio, and gouge their way back to relevancy -- but are they too late? Most of the bouts are fought to a nail biting 4-4, and each bout is more emotional and hard-fought then the last. The first team to gain 9 victories wins the match. It's safe to say, that the Team Gold Medal is contested hotly until the very end.

Movie Language: English

Movie Length: 55 mins

Movie Synopsis:
Fencing finals in Monal, France in 2005 for men's epee.
The final bout is between Marcus Robatsch (Austria) and Jerome Jeannet (France), both members of strong fencing families. The camera-work is tremendous, positively theatrical, as during Jeannet's edge-lit close-up at the beginning of the individual bout. (In the bonus material, Fencing Pictures really flexes its muscle, showing Ukraine versus France's semi-final team match from two separate angles in split-screen.)

As the Epeeists begin, Robatsch is not quite as patient as Jeannet. Down 1-2, he fleches and finds that he still can't out-reach Jeannet's counter-attack. Jeannet comfortably works with his distance and considerable reach, while Robatsch relies more on on-blade actions -- the beat, the parry riposte. Coming into the second period, Jeannet starts unleashing his attack. Robatsch, pushed back to his end of the strip but still unwary, gets caught several times with clever tempo-attacks.

Robatsch's approach varies between fleche attacks and cautious waiting. Though he has trouble setting up his attacks against such an experienced opponent, he can sometimes draw Jeannet into a longer blade exchange and squeeze a point in.

Jeannet, meanwhile, has a very solid plan for this bout. He prosecutes a very tight game, using a tempo lunge, a low parry, or a fleeing counter with quiet efficiency, using each only they seem necessary, and benefitting from the numbers game. He steadily works his score upward, as Robatsch fights just a few points away.

The announcers keep up a steady discussion through the action. The discussion is very friendly to new or non-fencers (you must score with the tip, they're fencing on a strip), but includes a lot of history on the fencers, and discussions of their tactics.

TEAM FINAL
Germany versus France: Nine rounds of fencing between two old foes. In the 2004 Olym-pics, France elimiated Germany 45-44 in the semi-finals. Now, Germany is very interested in revenge, and their first fencer, Fiedler, quickly racks up 4 touches on France's Fabrice Jeannet.

Thus begins a point lead which is only brought even in the third match, by France's Gru-mier. But the come-back is not decisive, Germany ends the bout ahead, and keeps a slim lead through the rest of France's fencers. Strategy is the watchword for the team match, as neither side flares out with a desperate run for points. Despite a high-scoring bout between Strigel and Jeannet, by the sixth round the score is only 17-16 with Germany in the lead. By then, the fencing is pretty much "open," with both sides able to score as many points as they can, with only a distant upper limit to the score.

As the number of remaining rounds decreases, the score begins to see-saw more wildly. Grumier brings the French into the lead, but in the very next bout Strigel (interviewed in the bonus material) brings the Germans back three very decisive attacks, including at least two deadly, incredibly tight feint-6 disengages that catch his opponent, Janvier, flat-footed.

Throughout the match, France fences reactively, waiting to counter the German attacks or pick up a point when Germany shows an error. But action for action, Germany is able to en-gineer better outcomes. The next time France closes the score, they turn strategic, only moving the score by one point in the penultimate round.

Though Germany dominated the earlier rounds, the tension is palpable as the teams enter the final bout. Germany's Schmid gets the unenviable task of facing down an intense Fab-rice Jeannet with only a slim one-point lead. Soon the score is in flux again, and Germany has to scramble against France's rally. The final minutes of the match are marked by cheers, fleches, and screams of frustration as one side nearly implodes under an epic flood of touches.
