I built this puppet as a means to explore stop-motion character animation on my own time. With very basic materials/house hold items, you can create something that will develop your animation skills greatly. I have some process photos of how I built this puppet in a Film Annex blog post at: http://www.filmannex.com/posts/blog_show_post/getting-a-start-in-stop-motion-animation/49593

Link: click to watch
http://www.filmannex.com/movie/basic-stop-motion-animation-puppet-test/30354/http://www.filmannex.com/movie/basic-stop-motion-animation-puppet-test/30354/03 04 2012 00:06:20 +0000How to Spin a Camera Around the CN Tower - An Instructional Guide to Hyperlapse Photography

Movie Title: How to Spin a Camera Around the CN Tower - An Instructional Guide to Hyperlapse Photography

Movie Language: English

Movie Length: 2:11

Movie Synopsis:
Inspired by the popular 'building-spinning' technique found in the Hypno SF project (at www.hypnosf.com), we take an inside look at exactly how this visual is created. The project was a challenge to explore the iconic city and its landmarks in the most visually creative way possible. Hypno utilizes standard stop-motion animation principles and techniques, but on an extremely large scale. A combination of video and photography creates the signature 'sling-shot' and 'spinning' techniques created for the video. The visuals are set to the song 'Water Falls' by Ottawa, Canada based band Kalle Mattson (www.kallemattson.com). An Arctic inhabitant must labor for his survival in the cold, desolate environment that surrounds him. One day, the appearance of a mysterious box challenges his willingness to work for this survival. This stop-motion animated short was my thesis film during my animation studies at Sheridan College.

Link: click to watch
http://www.filmannex.com/movie/the-arctic-circle-a-short-animated-film-by-canadian-filmmaker-kevin-parry/29726/http://www.filmannex.com/movie/the-arctic-circle-a-short-animated-film-by-canadian-filmmaker-kevin-parry/29726/19 01 2012 22:38:08 +0000The Arctic Circle - Behind the Scenes Storyboard Comparison

Movie Title: The Arctic Circle - Behind the Scenes Storyboard Comparison

Movie Language: English

Movie Length: 3:50

Movie Synopsis:
This is a comparison video between the storyboard panels I drew for my short film The Arctic Circle, and the final film. Animation is an extremely time consuming process. You pretty much can only shoot/animate what is necessary. Unlike live-action, you can't shoot coverage and make choices in edit. This is why storyboarding is an essential process in animation. As you can see, the final film is extremely close to what I had originally storyboarded almost 6 months before shooting began. Storyboarding is an extra valuable step in stop-motion animation because it informs you of what you will need to build in terms of sets. Enjoy this look into the process of how my film was created!

Link: click to watch
http://www.filmannex.com/movie/the-arctic-circle-behind-the-scenes-storyboard-comparison/29735/http://www.filmannex.com/movie/the-arctic-circle-behind-the-scenes-storyboard-comparison/29735/21 01 2012 14:13:17 +0000Thick As Thieves - An Animated Music Video by Canadian Filmmaker Kevin Parry

Movie Title: Thick As Thieves - An Animated Music Video by Canadian Filmmaker Kevin Parry

Movie Language: English

Movie Length: 3:30

Movie Synopsis:
A stop-motion, arts and crafts history of the world. This music video for Kalle Mattson (kallemattson.com) was animated over the course of six months. The concept was to track the history of the Earth from the Big Bang onward, in a low-fi, arts and crafts visual style. All materials used in the video were picked up from thrift stores and whatever was laying around. The core idea was conflict through the ages, taken in an extremely light and humorous context.

Link: click to watch
http://www.filmannex.com/movie/thick-as-thieves-an-animated-music-video-by-canadian-filmmaker-kevin-parry/29727/http://www.filmannex.com/movie/thick-as-thieves-an-animated-music-video-by-canadian-filmmaker-kevin-parry/29727/19 01 2012 23:05:50 +0000Thick As Thieves - Behind the Scenes Storyboard Reel

Movie Title: Thick As Thieves - Behind the Scenes Storyboard Reel

Movie Language: English

Movie Length: 3:30

Movie Synopsis:
This is the storyboard reel (animatic) that I cut together before production began on the Thick As Thieves music video. This reel was mainly used to work out timing for the video. Because the spinning globe in the final video needed to spin at a constant rate, there was a lot of math involved with getting visual cues to match up with the music. This reel informed me when every major event needed to be on screen, and I reverse-engineered the timing of the globe from there. Drawings were made by myself, Andrew Wilson (andrewewilson.blogspot.com), and Carla Veldman (dekunst.blogspot.com). Music by Kalle Mattson (www.kallemattson.com)

Link: click to watch
http://www.filmannex.com/movie/thick-as-thieves-behind-the-scenes-storyboard-reel/29736/http://www.filmannex.com/movie/thick-as-thieves-behind-the-scenes-storyboard-reel/29736/21 01 2012 14:35:34 +0000
