From the film’s length (158 minutes!) to the special effects, and all the way to its believability factor, “2012” is a film of massive proportions. Different kinds of epic proportions awaits us in the year 2012. According to the film, the apocalypse is near. The Mayan calendar is set to reach the end of its 13th cycle on December 21, 2012 – and nothing follows that date. “2012” tells the story of what’s to come. At the center of death and destruction is Jackson Curtis (John Cusack), a failed author with a failed marriage. He stumbles upon the news that the world as we know it is coming to an end. So the poor sap becomes a hero in the eyes of his kids, his ex-wife Kate (Amanda Pete) and her current husband, Gordon (Thomas McCarthy). “2012’s” narrative is told from two points of view: those who know about the cataclysmic events that await the earth and those who remain in the dark. Woody Harrelson steals the show as a hippie prophet named Charlie Frost who tells Jackson about the impending gloom and doom. Director Roland Emmerich, the current father of disaster movies, knows the formula by now. Credible actors playing good and evil characters facing unbelievable situations equals apocalypse film at its finest. Emmerich used this time-tested formula in “Independence Day,” “The Day After Tomorrow,” heck, even “Godzilla,” and now, the director has used it again in “2012.” When the film works, it really works! The first half of the film is a joyful orgasm of exploding cities! Oh look, Santa Monica falling into the ocean! Goodbye Yellowstone! Arrivederci Roma! But after a few of these eye-popping monstrosities, the novelty wears thin. Emmerich co-wrote the campy script with Harald Kloser who previously worked with the director in “10,000 B.C.” There are many unintentionally funny scenes but there also some good moments with genuine emotion. One of my favorite scenes involves actor Chiwetel Ejiofor who plays the president’s chief science advisor. He’s warning his cruise-ship singer father, played by Blu Mankuma, about the imminent disaster. These two great actors are not even shown in a scene together – they’re talking on the phone – but their performances resonate emotionally. Remember the scene in “Independence Day” where Bill Pullman as President Thomas J. Whitmore addresses the country about the looming alien invasion? There’s a similar scene in “2012” featuring Danny Glover as President Thomas Wilson. But Glover as the commander-in-chief doesn’t have the same gravitas as Pullman. His character is reduced to a caricature. I’m torn with this film. On the one hand, I love disaster flicks and all its merry mayhem. I was like a kid in a candy store taking in all the apocalyptic images the movie could muster. But I overdosed quickly! By the final reel, I found myself looking at my watch, hoping for “2012” to end. I even caught myself rolling my eyes at the preposterous conclusion. I did like the image that Emmerich used in the end. For one brief second, I caught a glimpse of what “2012” was supposed to be. But the majority of its budget was used on special effects and not to perfect the storyline. It’s a shame because I was ready to embrace the film and all its clichés, formulas, and plot holes. I was even willing to throw out the film critic handbook because there are many exciting and entertaining moments. Alas, “2012” is reduced to being wonderfully messy. But there’s salvation! This coming Thanksgiving, another apocalyptic film is coming to theaters. It’s called “The Road” starring Viggo Mortensen based on the Pulitzer-prized winning novel by Cormac McCarthy (“No Country for Old Men”). Enjoy being a witness to seeing the world end in “2012,” and then pay attention to how the remaining survivors live in The Road,” a much better and deeper disaster movie. “2012” gets 2 The End is Near kisses

Link: click to watch
http://www.filmannex.com/movie/2012-movie-review/17627/http://www.filmannex.com/movie/2012-movie-review/17627/12 11 2009 16:56:26 +0000"9" AND "THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE" MOVIE REVIEWS

Movie Title: "9" AND "THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE" MOVIE REVIEWS

Movie Language: English

Movie Length: 2:30

Movie Synopsis:
http://www.mannythemovieguy.com WELCOME TO THE POST APOCALYPTIC WORLD OF 9... How he landed the role? Who auditioned for what role? Have fun! More info about the film from Yahoo: The story of an ordinary man's search for clarity in a universe where Jefferson Airplane is on the radio and F-Troop is on TV. It is 1967, and Larry Gopnik, a physics professor at a quiet Midwestern university, has just been informed by his wife Judith that she is leaving him. She has fallen in love with one of his more pompous acquaintances, Sy Ableman, who seems to her a more substantial person than the feckless Larry. Larry's unemployable brother Arthur is sleeping on the couch, his son Danny is a discipline problem and a shirker at Hebrew school, and his daughter Sarah is filching money from his wallet in order to save up for a nose job. While his wife and Sy Ableman blithely make new domestic arrangements, and his brother becomes more and more of a burden, an anonymous hostile letter-writer is trying to sabotage Larry's chances for tenure at the university. Also, a graduate student seems to be trying to bribe him for a passing grade while at the same time threatening to sue him for defamation. Plus, the beautiful woman next door torments him by sunbathing nude. Struggling for equilibrium, Larry seeks advice from three different rabbis. Can anyone help him cope with his afflictions and become a righteous person - a mensch - a serious man? The timeless tale is aided by a movable set that conforms to a particular scene’s demands. Because the current adaptation looks at different angles of love and relationships, it is fitting that the set corresponds to the various intersections examined. The result is a period piece with contemporary flair that investigates the many faces of love. Keira Knightley returns to the loving arms of her “Pride and Prejudice” and “Atonement” director to breathe life into one of the most famous literary heroines. Knightley brilliantly plays the title role of a woman torn between passion and responsibility. Set during the late 19th century tsarist Russia, Anna Karenina (Knightley) is a vibrant and beautiful woman who is married to Karenin (Jude Law), a high-ranking government official to whom she has borne a son. Complications arise when Anna meets Vronsky (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), a dashing cavalry officer. The two characters have incredible chemistry that cannot, and will not, be ignored. The script by Academy Award-winning screenwriter, Tom Stoppard (“Shakespeare in Love”), stays true to the spirit of the beloved book. From the love for Russia to romantic love, the many incarnations of love is explored. One of my favorite moments in the film happened during a dinner scene where one of the guests asked “Will you die for love?” It’s a question that mirrors the theme of the book – the human heart’s extraordinary capacity to love. I’ve always felt that Law is a fantastic character actor and it’s a pleasure to see him in a subdued and quite role like Karenin. Matthew Macfadyen as Anna’s sister, Oblonsky, brings in the necessary laughter. His performance pulls you right in from the very start of the film. Domhnall Gleeson as Oblonky’s best friend, Levin, is also a delight. We all know the actor as Bill Weasley in the “Harry Potter” series, but we did not know him to be a gifted thespian. Gleeson’s Levin is an important aspect in this new adaptation. His character has been all but forgotten in the past adaptations, but in order to contrast Anna’s wild passions, you need to show Levin’s true and unbridled love. If Anna’s story is dark, then Levin’s contrasting tale is pure and unadulterated. The production design deserves an Oscar nomination. It is less of a gimmick and more of a fluid part of the story. The set becomes a character in the movie. In the end, is Anna Karenina a heroine or an anti-heroine? The movie does not give you an easy answer. When it comes to the mystery of the human heart, we are all guilty of falling into the tricky spell of rampant passion.

Link: click to watch
http://www.filmannex.com/movie/anna-karenina-2012-movie-review/32277/http://www.filmannex.com/movie/anna-karenina-2012-movie-review/32277/28 11 2012 22:52:28 +0000"ARGO" Movie Review

Movie Title: "ARGO" Movie Review

Movie Language: English

Movie Length: 2:00

Movie Synopsis:
When “Gone Baby Gone” came out in 2007, I thought the idea of Ben Affleck, the director, was just a fluke. Sure, he created one of the finest films of that year, but how could a leading man who once dated Jennifer Lopez craft a thought-provoking film? And then, “The Town” was released three years later, and I started paying attention. Affleck could be one of the best storytellers of his generation. Fast forward to now with his brilliant “Argo” and you can call me a believer. Yes, Affleck is a master storyteller. From the informative opening credits to the humanistic ending, “Argo” is a well-told film about the Iran hostage crisis. For a political drama, this film has such levity that it might as well have been an action-packed rescue movie. “Argo” opens with a five-minute vignette about the history of violence in the Middle East. Created like a Salvador Dali meets Walt Disney cartoon peppered with real-life footage, the entertaining but eye-opening intro of the movie catapults us to the events leading up to the Iran hostage crisis. As the Iranian revolution reaches its boiling point on November 4, 1979, militants storm the U.S. Embassy in Tehran to take 52 Americans hostage. But six Americans manage to slip away and find refuge in the home of Canadian Ambassador Ken Taylor (Victor Garber). Time is ticking to get the six Americans safely out of the country. So the CIA turns to their top “exfiltration” specialist named Tony Mendez (Affleck) who comes up with a plan so incredible that it could only happen in the movies. Written by Chris Terrio (“Damages”) based on a selection from The Master of Disguise by Antonio J. Mendez and the Wired Magazine article “The Great Escape,” by Joshua Bearman, “Argo” has a nail-biting script punctuated by comedic one-liners. The adaptation’s nuanced frivolity is what makes this one of the best political dramas of all time. Adding humor to the occasion are John Goodman as renowned makeup artist John Chambers (“Planet of the Apes”), and Alan Arkin as film industry mogul, Lester Siegel. Both men help Mendez rescue the stranded six Americans. Their plan? Mendez and the six Americans are about to make a movie in Iran and they’re in the country for location scouting. The road to rescue the Americans is paved with intense, nail-biting moments. Affleck knows how to entertain and provoke at the same time. He knows his drama, as well as action, and combines both genres to come up with one of the best films of 2012. “Argo” also boasts an excellent ensemble with Bryan Cranston (“Breaking Bad”) as Mendez’s boss, the assistant deputy director of the CIA, Jack O’Donnell, and Clea Duvall and Tate Donovan as part of the stranded Americans. “Argo” is gripping, funny, and extremely timely. The film deserves a Best Picture nomination, as well as Best Adapted Screenplay, and Affleck for Best Director. Oddly, the Academy has not given Affleck a Best Director nod yet. He deserves it now more than ever for his movie about the making of a fake film is about as real as you can get. “ARGO” GETS 4 KISSES

Link: click to watch
http://www.filmannex.com/movie/argo-movie-review/31744/http://www.filmannex.com/movie/argo-movie-review/31744/11 10 2012 16:16:59 +0000"ARTHUR (2011)" AND "HANNA" MOVIE REVIEWS

Movie Title: "ARTHUR (2011)" AND "HANNA" MOVIE REVIEWS

Movie Language: English

Movie Length: 2:40

Movie Synopsis:
Two big films are opening this weekend, we have the remake "Arthur" for romantic lovers, and "Hanna" for action thriller fans. Based on Osama Tazukas legendary manga (Japanese comic book), Astro Boy garnered a devoted U.S. following, becoming another hit 1980 television series, and then again in a TV show that debuted in 2003. I was never a fan of the Astro Boy series and its many incarnations. But I can tell you right now, the new animated adventure Astro Boy has made a believer out of me. Narrated by Charlize Theron, the film is an origin story about how a boy named Toby becomes Astro (both characters voiced by the fantastic Freddie Highmore). We learn that Earth has become a dumping ground of used robot parts, so humans built a gleaming Metropolis in the sky known as Metro City. The scientist behind the technical revolution is Dr. Tenma (Nicolas Cage), Tobys father. When Toby dies during a laboratory accident, Dr. Tenma creates a robot to replace his son. He programs his creation with the best of human characteristics and values, as well as endowing him with extraordinary super powers using a power source made of positive blue energy known as the Blue Core. But when Astro Boy fails to meet his fathers expectations, he is cast out. The ambitious leader of Metro City, President Stone (Donald Sutherland), also wants Astro Boy. He is obsessed with obtaining the core located inside our superhero so he can use it for his Peacekeeper robot created to dominate Earth. Directed by David Bowers (Flushed Away), Astro Boy is a loving homage to Tezukas creation. Bowers co-wrote the script with Timothy Hyde Harris (Kindergarten Cop, Space Jam) and you can tell that both are very careful in preserving the integrity of Tezukas vision. For every eye-popping action scene, theres a sweet moment about a boy who is still in search of his identity and purpose. All the actors doing voice work did a terrific job. Acting as the conscience of the film is Bill Nighys Dr. Elefun, the only one who initially believes in Astro Boy. Eugene Levy provides the voice of Orrin, the robot servant of Dr. Tenma. Nathan Lane also joins the cast as Hamegg, an Earth-side entrepreneur whos hiding a terrible secret. Kristen Bell voices Cora, a Metro City runaway who becomes Astro Boys friend on Earth. Even Samuel Jackson joins in on the fun as Zog, an old school robot who plays a pivotal part towards the end. Astro Boy also tackles important societal issues such as racism (robots have rights too) and saving our environment (Earth cannot be a dumping ground). But most of all, the film will speak to kids about finding their own identity. The animation by Imagi studios is superb! The film starts with a 1960s cartoon look, and then gradually develops into a hybrid of Japanese and American animation. Astro Boys animation can be best described as both lavish and minimalist. Sure, Astro Boy follows conventions of a superhero film but when its done well, even clichéd movies can be eventful. Underneath it all is a strong story of a boy who is just trying to fit in. Summit Entertainment, the home that Twilight built, has another winning franchise in their hands. The East and the West converge to give us a truly satisfying animated action adventure that will win your heart in a very big way. He called himself the king of the world when accepting the Best Picture Oscar trophy for 1997’s “Titanic” but since that Kate/Leo expedition, Cameron hasn’t made a full-feature film. The director pretty much submerged himself in underwater projects such as “Aliens of the Deep” and “Ghosts of the Abyss.” With “Avatar,” I’m happy to report that yup, the king is back! Cameron has a distinct style of building the narrative slowly, introducing the main characters and their motivations, presenting the plot, and then BAM! He uses shock and awe to mesmerize viewers into full submission. This technique was evident in the first two “Terminator” films, “Aliens,” and “Titanic” and now, it’s on full display on “Avatar.” Set in 2154, Earth is dying so humans explore Pandora, a lush jungle-covered extraterrestrial moon filled with fascinating life forms. More importantly, Pandora is rich in Unobtainium – a mineral that cost about $20 million per pound back on Earth. Funded by the Resources Development Administration, humans invade Pandora in hopes of mining the moon. The company’s CEO, Carter Selfridge (Giovanni Ribisi) and his henchman Col. Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang) will stop at nothing to fulfill their mission. But there’s only one problem -- the royal clan indigenous to Pandora known as Na’vi. They’re sentient humanoid race who are more physically capable than humans. Standing approximately 10 feet with tails and sparkling blue skin, the Na’vi are one with their unspoiled world. Since humans are unable to breathe the air on Pandora, they have created genetically-bred human and Na’vi hybrids known as Avatars. The Avatar Program, headed by Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver back with her “Aliens” director), aims to understand the Na’vi and perhaps work a diplomatic solution with them. The film opens and closes with a shot of an eye. That eye belongs to Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a paraplegic ex-marine who was paralyzed from the waist down in combat on Earth. His twin was originally chosen to join the Avatar program but since they have the same genome, Jake has unwittingly been recruited. He just can’t resist the prospect of getting to walk again, even as an Avatar. As Jake integrates himself into the Na’vi clan, he begins to fall in love with Neytiri (Zoe Saldana). Soon, Jake is forced to take sides. His decision will change the face of Pandora forever. “Avatar” is the most beautiful, gorgeous movie I’ve seen this year. The colors pop, and the special effects are not gratuitous. They’re all needed within the narrative. You haven’t heard me say this before, but watch this film in 3-D. This time, the technology is not just a mere gimmick; it’s a necessity, essential to your enjoyment of “Avatar.” The film is intricately made by Cameron. I forgot I was watching a CGI film. The movie is so vibrant and alive! Like the Avatar characters, the film is a living, breathing, rich experience. “Avatar” is not without imperfections. Some character motivations are a bit archaic. For example, military and corporations are bad, while tree huggers and scientists are good. But it doesn’t matter because taken as a whole, the plot mechanisms work well! Acting, yes (!) the acting is good! Remember Gollum from “Lord of the Rings?” Andy Serkis did such a fine job many people were campaigning for Best Supporting Actor Oscar for him. Well, “Avatar” is similar to that. The CGI performance of the actors are outstanding especially Saldana. She will make you forget you’re watching a computer-generated image of her character. Cameron raises the bar in CGI and 3-D filmmaking. From here on out, every computer-generated film will be compared to “Avatar.” It’s an environmentally-aware film (although it’s not in your face) with a subtle anti-war message. There’s also a heartwarming love story in the middle, and did I tell you “Avatar” has great action sequences as well? “Avatar” is one of my favorite films of 2009 for it has equal parts heart and soul, brains and brawn, just like any good Cameron film. So welcome back king of the world, please don’t leave us waiting so long next time. But the only common denominator between both comedies is the wedding theme inherent in their respective plots. And I hate to break it to you "Hangover" fans, but I find "Bridesmaids" funnier and more emotionally satisfying. If "The Hangover" is a mystery built as a comedy, "Bridesmaids" is about one woman's quest to find redemption. In the center of it all is co-writer and star Kristen Wiig who is about to steal Tina Fey's cerebral comedienne crown. Wiig, co-writing with Annie Mumolo, singlehandedly revamps the wedding comedy genre. Both writers make even the stock characters seem fresh and original. In the center of it all is Annie (Wiig), a loser by any standard. She has a failed cake business, she is a worthless jewelry store clerk, her lovelife is virtually non-existent except for a few trysts with the cocky Ted (Jon Hamm in an uncredited cameo), and she has a crappy car with a broken taillight which is a metaphor for her broken life. But Annie has not hit rock bottom yet. Her life is about to unravel as she becomes a maid of honor for her best friend Lillian (a demure Maya Rudolph). Annie's mess of a life will lead the bride and her group of colorful bridesmaids (Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon-Covey, and Ellie Kemper) on a wild ride down the road to matrimony. From engagement parties to bridal showers, all the detailed rituals surrounding weddings are highlighted. Each ritual is a standalone comedy bit that showcases the funny antics of the various bridesmaids. There's Helen (Byrne), a popular but ultimately empty housewife who's vying to be Lillian's best friend much to Annie's chagrin. "Reno 911's" McLendon-Covey is Rita, an unhappy mother of three boys who welcomes the adventure of going to Las Vegas for their planned bachelorette party. There's also Kemper's Becca, perhaps the happiest of the bridesmaids because she already found the man of her dreams. And then there's the scene-stealing McCarthy as the sex starved Megan. She is the breakout star of "Bridesmaids," just like how Zach Galifianakis stole "The Hangover." The narrative of "Bridesmaids" is told from a woman's point-of-view so it's no surprise that the men in their lives are played by lesser-known actors. Of all the male characters in the film, Rhodes (Chris O'Dowd) is the more realized. He's the traffic cop who gives Annie a ticket for her broken taillight and is about to turn her life upside down. Even the legendary Jill Clayburgh shows up as Annie's mom. A wannabe painter who sponsors Alcoholic Anonymous participants, not because she's a drunk, but she finds their stories humorous. "Bridesmaids" is director Paul Feig's first major full feature gig and he deserves more projects. His resume includes directing episodes of hits such as "The Office," "30 Rock," and "Arrested Development." Clearly, Feig knows how to find the funny in pathos. From the Judd Apatow comedy machine, the producer has not created a film as funny and heartfelt like "Bridesmaids" in a very long time. But the real heroine of the movie is Wiig, she holds the film together from start to finish. There's a scene during the bridal shower where Annie finally breaks down. As I was watching Wiig embody her character's failure, I couldn't help but think to myself that "Bridesmaids" is what great comedy is all about. Perfect mixture of well-written characters, and excellent comedic timing and pace. Save the date for "Bridesmaids," it's an instant classic! It is indeed a worldwide problem that has everyone from President Obama to Lady Gaga taking action. One action you can take is watching the new documentary “Bully” directed by Sundance and Emmy-award winning filmmaker Lee Hirsch. It’s a startling and humanistic portrait of five kids and their families dealing with bullying. The first folks we meet in the movie are Kirk and Laura Smalley. Their 11 year-old son, Ty, committed suicide due to bullying. Both parents are still clearly distraught about their son’s death. The stories of the affected parents are as equally heartbreaking as the narrative of the children. There’s David and Tina Long, parents of 17-year old Tyler of Murray County, Georgia, who hanged himself after years of abuse. The Longs demand accountability from the school and force their community to deal with bullying.

Link: click to watch
http://www.filmannex.com/movie/bully-2012-movie-review/30323/http://www.filmannex.com/movie/bully-2012-movie-review/30323/30 03 2012 00:15:16 +0000"Capitalism: A Love Story" Movie Review

Movie Title: "Capitalism: A Love Story" Movie Review

Movie Language: English

Movie Length: 2:30

Movie Synopsis:
http://www.mannythemovieguy.com My special review of "Capitalism: A Love Story" by Michael Moore.

Link: click to watch
http://www.filmannex.com/movie/capitalism-a-love-story-movie-review/17408/http://www.filmannex.com/movie/capitalism-a-love-story-movie-review/17408/05 10 2009 22:05:49 +0000"CARS 2" MOVIE REVIEW

Movie Title: "CARS 2" MOVIE REVIEW

Movie Language: English

Movie Length: 3:00

Movie Synopsis:
My expectations were low for Disney/Pixar’s “Cars 2.” The first film in the franchise, which was released in 2006, was my least favorite in the Pixar canon for it lacked the narrative magic that made the animation studio great. Five years later, we are being treated to the sequel as Pixar celebrates its 25th anniversary. The studio should have chosen a different film to coincide with their twenty five years of excellence. “Cars 2,” the 12th Pixar film to be released, is a sequel that’s custom-built for grown-ups that will leave kids in the dust. In the screening that I attended for “Cars 2,” you could hear adults snorting with laughter but nary a word nor a guffaw from the little ones. Some of them were crying, perhaps out of boredom, but their parents were too busy being entertained by Mater (Larry the Cable Guy). The country bumpkin tow truck is now the driving force of the franchise while Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) takes a back seat. “Cars 2” tells the story of how Mater transforms from a simpleton to the “smartest, most honest” super spy. Mater gets entangled in international espionage as his best friend, Lightning McQueen, tries to win the first-ever World Grand Prix, a race to determine the world’s fastest car. He is torn between helping Lightning win the high-profile race or joining a top-secret mission orchestrated by master British spy Finn McMissile (voiced by Michael Caine) and the rookie field spy Holley Shiftwell (voiced by Emily Mortimer). There’s a confusing subplot about Allinol, the alternative fuel created by a former oil baron, Sir Miles Axlerod (voiced by Eddie Izzard). After selling off his oil fortune, Axlerod converted himself into an electric vehicle and has devoted his life to finding clean-burning energy. He created the World Grand Prix to show off his new wonder fuel, Allinol. As expected, there are many eye-popping race scenes to captivate your 3D-imprisoned eyes. There are race scenes above water, in parking structures, in the desert, and above air. Their amazing race spans the globe as the characters dash through Japan, France, Italy, and Great Britain. But “Cars 2” will not race towards your heart. The problem with the sequel is it has too much brain but not enough heart. At least “Cars” had the luck of featuring Paul Newman and his tortured soul character, Doc Hudson. In the sequel, the filmmakers paid homage to Newman by renaming the Piston Cup after his character. It’s now known as the Hudson Hornet Piston Cup. Pixar has always been a master at giving us aw moments, at tugging at our heartstrings. But sadly, “Cars 2” does not have any of those scenes. Oh sure, director John Lasseter and company tried to repeat the same formula they used in “Cars,” exploiting the uneven friendship between Mater and Lightning, but it’s not weighty enough. Lasseter, who also directed the first “Cars” and who is responsible for giving us some of the best Pixar films such as the first two “Toy Story” flicks, returned to helm with a brand new scriptwriter, Ben Queen. Perhaps the scribe, a Pixar newbie, was hired because he created the illegal cross-country road race TV show, “Drive.” But great race scenes do not make great movies. Sure, I was mesmerized by the sequel’s creativity and the filmmakers’ attention to detail. I love the eye-popping vista in the Japan scenes, and the joie de vivre palette reflected in the France sequences. It’s also fun to observe that cars, when going through airport security, also take off their shoes, well, their tires. “Cars 2” is full of observant humor that bodes well for adults. The kids, on the other hand, laughed out louder in the opening short film that features the “Toy Story” characters giving Ken and Barbie their own Hawaiian vacation. But then there are also some failed comedic bits like a scene involving Wasabi that audiences did not get, or Mater equating being a spy agent to being an insurance agent and singing, “Like a good agent Mater is here.” Are you laughing? In the end, the hit-and-miss story does not match the film's dazzling creativity. But while "Cars 2" may not hit on all cylinders, you can still take it for a test drive. Did I enjoy the movie at least? Well, I'm an adult so I revved it up. Directed by Brian Desmond Hurst and adapted by Noel Langley, the movie captured the dark yet whimsical tone of Dickens’ classic. “Disney’s A Christmas Carol,” the new animated film from writer-director Robert Zemeckis, tried to reinvigorate one of the greatest Christmas stories ever told. Though Zemeckis failed to find the right balance between the dark and the whimsical, I still applaud the movie for being faithful to Dickens’ work. The film is very faithful indeed, that some of the images may terrify little children. Let’s face it, Dickens’ 1843 novella was intended for adults. So Walt Disney Pictures is in a quandary. They are marketing an animated film to children that will ultimately scare them. We all know the story by now. An old, bitter miser, Ebenezer Scrooge (voiced by Jim Carrey), finds redemption when he is visited by ghosts on Christmas Eve. Carrey also voices Scrooge at various ages, the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Christmas Yet to Come. The Ghost of Christmas Past appears in a form of a flickering flame which is a fitting representation of what Dickens described as a “bright, clear jet of light.” The Ghost takes Scrooge on a journey back in time, revisiting moments in his past. We see Scrooge as a bright-eyed apprentice of Fezziwig (Bob Hoskins), as a man in love with Belle (Robin Wright Penn), and the caring brother of Fan (also voiced by Penn). The most entertaining of Scrooge’s spectral visits is the Ghost of Christmas Present. He’s a merry giant who presents himself atop a Christmas tree decked out in robes and shows Scrooge what his life is really like in the present. Underneath his robes are two scary looking kids named Ignorance and Want. The chapter that will terrify small children feature the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. He is Death incarnate and takes Scrooge into his horrible future. There’s a scary scene where Scrooge is being chased by a carriage pulled by black horses with red, beady eyes. Zemeckis has nearly perfected the performance-capture animation technology he utilized in 2004’s “The Polar Express” and 2007’s “Beowulf.” The cinematography of the film is excellent; it’s like a travelogue to Ye Olde England of the 1800s in full Disney Digital 3D. There are also many flying scenes to entertain the young audiences. Carrey’s performance as Scrooge is credible, but I get the sense that the actor is more at home with the Ghosts characters. Gary Oldman as Cratchit, Scrooge’s assistant, steals the show. Oldman also voices Marley, Scrooge’s partner, and Tiny Tim, Cratchit’s sick boy. My main complaint is Scrooge’s characterization. He wasn’t presented nearly as evil as the film hoped for. Sure, Scrooge wishes for poor people to die, but then the next scene shows him getting his comeuppance. Also, Scrooge’s transformation towards the end wasn’t as joyful as I remember other “Christmas Carol” adaptations. But I did like the surprise narrator in the end, and Zemeckis still captures the spirit of Christmas. I also enjoyed Zemeckis’ take on the Ghosts. By using Carrey to voice the phantom visitors, this film version questions whether the Ghosts are merely extensions of Scrooge himself. And for that, “Disney’s A Christmas Carol” gets 3 Bah Humbug kisses

Link: click to watch
http://www.filmannex.com/movie/disneys-a-christmas-carol-movie-review/17593/http://www.filmannex.com/movie/disneys-a-christmas-carol-movie-review/17593/05 11 2009 22:56:23 +0000"DRIVE" (2011) MOVIE REVIEW

Movie Title: "DRIVE" (2011) MOVIE REVIEW

Movie Language: English

Movie Length: 2:30

Movie Synopsis:
Ryan Gosling is having a great year. The thinking man’s heartthrob gave a memorable performance in “Crazy, Stupid, Love” and he is set to steal the spotlight from George Clooney in the upcoming political drama “The Ides of March.” In “Drive,” Gosling, a gifted risk-taker of an actor, delivers a subdued yet fully realized portrayal of a man who works as a Hollywood stunt driver by day and a getaway wheelman at night. Much like Ryan O’Neal in 1978’s “The Driver,” Gosling’s character is simply called Driver. He’s a man with no name and he rarely speaks. We understand his psyche from what he chooses to wear – a satin jacket with a logo of a golden scorpion. The notion of masculinity is taken for a spin in “Drive.” Driver’s macho character is presented with the pulsating beat of the Eurosynth-heavy soundtrack, and the title sequence is adorned by hot pink graphics. The end result is a movie that both fans of the action genre and art-house cinema lovers will embrace. “Drive” is a cerebral action film that is truly one of the best movies of the year. Big credit goes to director Nicholas Winding Refn (“Bronson”), the Danish director who is the driving force of this neo-noir thriller. A self-confessed fan of Hollywood movies, Refn has been clearly influenced by films such as the 1968 Steve McQueen flick, “Bullitt,” and Michael Mann’s “Thief.” Refn also dedicates “Drive” to the avant-garde Chilean filmmaker, Alejandro Jodorowsky Prullansky, who loves to suffuse his work of art with violent surreal images. “Drive” uses violence sparingly but to great effect. The film will make you use your imagination Like a classic film noir, supporting roles are written with much verve. Bryan Cranston (“Breaking Bad”) gives an impressive performance as Shannon, Driver’s one-man mechanic, agent, and manager, as well as the closest thing he has to a friend. I also enjoyed Carey Mulligan (“An Education”) as Irene, the heart of the movie. She is Driver’s neighbor and his eventual love interest. Soon, Driver is spending more time with Irene and her son Benicio (Kaden Leos). But trouble arises with the return of Irene’s ex-convict husband Standard (Oscar Isaac). Ron Perlman as the hot-headed gangster Nino also gave a commendable performance, but my favorite is Albert Brooks, playing against type as the deceptively friendly and low-key criminal Bernie Rose. In great crime films, the hero and the villain are connected in a meaningful way for they have as much in common as they have differences. Driver is Yin to Bernie’s Yang and their relationship adds fuel to this highly-charged drama. Based on the book by James Sallis, scriptwriter Hossein Amini captures the tone and spirit of the novel but gives us a pulsating material aided by rhythmic montages of downtown LA with pounding musical score by Cliff Martinez. It’s a visceral treat! In the recently held Cannes Film Festival, Refn won the Best Director Prize and “Drive” received a 15-minute standing ovation. Rev it up folks and take “Drive” for a test drive. It’s really good. Having exceeded my expectations, the fifth installment of the popular franchise comes with an unpredictable twist that makes the sequel one of the best "Final Destination" movies. I'm not saying that this is Oscar quality. By all means no. Like most "Final Destination" films, the fifth movie is still saddled with amateurish acting paving the way to unintentionally funny scenes. But there are genuinely laugh-out-loud moments in the movie. Besides the nervous laughter that each clever but over-the-top death scene elicits, audiences will warm up to some cast members escaping Death's vengeance. The main crux of "Final Destination" movies is how our heroes cheat Death, at least initially. The first film showed us a group of people escaping death by a freak airplane accident; this time around it's about running away from a freak bridge construction accident. Each "Final Destination" movie has a character who could foresee their grim future and is able to warn their friends before Death arrives. In "Final Destination 5," Sam (Nicholas D'Agosto) has a premonition in which he and most of his friends and co-workers headed for a corporate retreat, die in a horrific bridge collapse. Before the accident happens, Sam is able to frantically usher as many of his colleagues to safety including his friend, Peter (Miles Fisher), and girlfriend, Molly (Emma Bell). But Death doesn't like to be cheated, and soon, the ill-fated group must find a way to escape their fatal fate. Being billed as the first "Final Destination" movie to be projected on IMAX 3D screens, viewers will be treated to larger-than-life gore carefully executed by director Steven Quale. Making his feature film directing debut, Quale, a longtime James Cameron collaborator, delivers a sequel with above-average production values. The bridge collapsing scene featuring the series' signature chain reaction style kills is bigger and better than all of the "Final Destination" sequels. Even though most of the death scenes are ridiculously (but intentionally) cartoonish, you will still cover your eyes in quasi-terror. My favorite among the cast is P.J. Byrne as Isaac, the ladies man of the group. The comedian, who stole scenes in the recent comedy "Horrible Bosses" as the barfly who would do anything for money, is the much-needed comic relief of the movie. Byrne and fellow comedian David Koechner, who appears as the group's boss, elevate the fifth installment. The addition of Courtney B. Vance as Agent Block is also interesting. For the first time in a "Final Destination" movie, guilt enters the picture because the federal agent makes the characters think about the consequences of their actions. After the screening, I found myself keenly aware of my surroundings. Having watched a violent film about consequences and the death and mayhem that follows made me paranoid about my environment. "Final Destination 5" had that effect on me. Too bad some of the lines written by scriptwriter Eric Heisserer (the upcoming "The Thing" remake; 2010's "A Nightmare on Elm Street") are hokey, delivered by overacting actors. Fisher, who's supposed to bring rage and pathos after experiencing sorrow, delivers an annoying and whiny performance. It doesn't help that the actor looks, talk, and acts like Tom Cruise. But the inclusion of franchise veteran Tony Todd is inspired. You know him as "Candyman" and you may have seen him in previous "Final Destination" movies as Bludsworth, the man who mysteriously knows too much. "Final Destination 5" takes the franchise to full circle but I doubt if this will be the final film. As long as we keep watching the sequels, Death will always appear. But at least in "Final Destination 5," he's a bit smarter and sharper in IMAX 3D of course. RATING: "FINAL DESTINATION 5" GETS 2 ½ KISSES

Link: click to watch
http://www.filmannex.com/movie/final-destination-5-movie-review/28190/http://www.filmannex.com/movie/final-destination-5-movie-review/28190/12 08 2011 00:11:23 +0000"Footloose" (2011) Movie Review

Movie Title: "Footloose" (2011) Movie Review

Movie Language: English

Movie Length: 2:30

Movie Synopsis:
Once upon a time, residents in Elmore City, Oklahoma were not allowed to dance. That became the basis of the 1984 “Footloose” movie written by Dean Pitchford and directed by Herbert Ross. Twenty seven years later, writer-director Craig Brewer (“Hustle & Flow,” “Black Snake Moan”) decided to take on the dubious task of remaking the iconic movie. Everyone doubted Brewer, including me. But I entered the theater a skeptic and walked out a believer. Let’s be honest here. The original “Footloose” was not necessarily a cinematic masterpiece. Most of the characters were treated as caricatures, and the film lacked motivation. The soundtrack headlined by Kenny Loggins was far more memorable than the movie itself. But Brewer did something short of miraculous. He made improvements to the storyline while being respectful of the original. The result is a film that is more of an homage than a remake. And dare I say it, the 2011 version is much better and more realized. All the unforgettable elements we fell in love with in the original are all in the new version. Ren McCormack, now played by newcomer Kenny Wormald, drives a yellow Volkswagen bug, there’s an iconic pair of red cowboy boots, and all the famous songs were retrofitted for today’s pop culture landscape. The main differences between the two versions are the setting and Kenny’s origin. The 1984 film was set in the fictional town of Bomont, Utah and Kenny came from Chicago. Now, our hero is from Boston and the town that bans dancing is Bomont, Georgia. Much like Kevin Bacon before him, Wormald is largely an unknown except for a few acting credits under his belt. Most of his past roles have required him to play a dancer, which makes Wormald perfect for the character of the young man who just wants to dance. Armed with a 50s teenager’s rebellious spirit and sporting an 80s-inspired pair of Ray Bans, Wormald is game to step into the iconic character. Bacon became a big star when “Footloose” opened, only time will tell if Wormald will have the same fate. This I can tell you though, the boy can dance! Dennis Quaid inherits the Reverend Shaw Moore character from John Lithgow. Suddenly, we can understand the role of the man of God who spearheads the dancing ban in his town. Lithgow is a great actor but this one-dimensional character was not ably fleshed out in the original. The latest version helps us understand the Reverend’s motivation, heck, we can even feel his pain. His son died in a car crash three years ago after a night of drinking and gasp, dancing! Moore’s level-headed wife is played by Andie MacDowell while Dianne Wiest starred in the original. But the biggest revelation for me is Julianne Hough of the “Dancing with the Stars” fame. This girl can act! She stars as Ariel Moore, the rebellious preacher’s daughter who falls in love with Ren. There’s a dramatic confrontational church scene between the Reverend and his daughter and Hough did not allow Quaid to upstage her in the acting department. Heading the supporting cast are two great character actors who have bright futures ahead of them. There’s Ziah Colon as Ariel’s friend previously played by Sarah Jessica Parker. My favorite is Miles Teller as Willard, Ren’s friend who can’t dance, originally played by Chris Penn. As soon as you hear the famous thumping beats of the title song, you will be drawn into the movie. And the choreography by Jamal Sims is also commendable. I grew up in the 80s where dance was taught as a form of rebellion, at least at the movies. From “Flashdance” to “Dirty Dancing” to “Footloose,” dance became a metaphor for freedom. In the “Footloose” world, dance can also be used to express anger. Yes folks, the warehouse scene where Bacon danced in the original is all in tact in the latest version. Only this time, Ren is listening to his iPod. The song remains the same but the beat is louder and is sung more passionately. “Footloose” version 2011 is a must see and is such a quicker picker-upper of a movie that you will sing and dance all the way home. Trust me when I say, it’s almost paradise. Every shot is painstakingly transformed into the glorious three-dimensional look. “G-Force” is the directing debut of Hoyt Yeatman. He previously won an Oscar for the visual effects work he did for “The Abyss.” I suspect that Yeatman was hired for his visual wizardry and not for his directorial skills. On the visual level, “G-Force” succeeded. The genesis of the film is quite intriguing. Yeatman’s 5-year-old son came up with the movie’s idea after bringing home the class guinea pig from preschool and started talking about guinea pigs as soldiers, wearing uniforms and little army helmets. The elder Yeatman decided to make the rodents secret agents, and Bruckheimer signed on to produce. “G-Force” tells the story of 3 guinea pigs, a star-nosed mole, and a fly. They’re part of a covert government program that train animals to work in espionage. The guinea pigs secret agents are Darwin (voiced by Sam Rockwell) the squad leader; Blaster (voiced by Tracy Morgan), the weapons expert; and Juarez (voiced by Penelope Cruz), the sexy martial arts pro. Nicolas Cage came up with a unique voice to breathe life into the star-nosed mole character named Speckles, the computer and information specialist. Helping the team is the literal fly-on-the-wall reconnaissance expert, Mooch. Fresh from the success of “The Hangover,” Zach Galifianakis is underused as the G-Force’s creator and father figure. Don’t expect to see him in his wacky mode he perfected in “The Hangover.” Another actor who’s underused is the great character actor, Bill Nighy. He stars as Leonard Saber, G-Force’s nemesis. Trouble begins for our heroes when the government puts the brakes on their mission. Now, three guinea pigs, a mole, and a fly are left alone to battle their mysterious enemy. Who is Saber working for, and how are they planning their world domination? Stealing the show is character actor Steve Buscemi who provided the voice of the rabidly territorial pet shop hamster Bucky. Keeping Bucky company is Hurley, a fat and happy guinea pig voiced by “Iron Man” director Jon Favreau. Bruckheimer enlisted topnotch actors to give credence to “G-Force” but I wish he paid more attention to the script. You’ll wonder why the film needed 5 scriptwriters to write a movie that is a tad better than a predictable Saturday morning cartoon. But kids, especially young boys, will enjoy the sights and sounds of “G-Force.” Besides gadgets, gizmos, and guinea pigs, the “G” in the title stands for children having a “good” time. And this Disney picture showcases the importance of unity as the film’s central theme. You cannot argue with that. “G-Force” is an oddly entertaining movie with captivating vista. One word of caution for parents though; your kids will want a guinea pig after watching this film. Now that’s a disaster waiting to happen. And for that, “G-Force” gets 2 ½ Guinea Pigs kisses

Link: click to watch
http://www.filmannex.com/movie/g-force-movie-review/17047/http://www.filmannex.com/movie/g-force-movie-review/17047/23 07 2009 23:34:40 +0000"Get Him to the Greek" & "Splice" Movie Review

Movie Title: "Get Him to the Greek" & "Splice" Movie Review

Movie Language: English

Movie Length: 2:23

Movie Synopsis:
My movie reviews of "Splice" and "Get Him to the Greek!" He fights crime wearing a powerful accessory – the mythical ring that grants him the ability to create anything his mind can imagine. Plus, Green Lantern was not as popular as Superman or Batman, so as a child, I deemed the character an underdog. I latched on to his every word as he uttered the lines “In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight.” So I was happy as a child getting his first Green Lantern promo ring when I heard that Warner Bros. Pictures was producing the first ever full-feature adaptation of the DC Comics superhero. And I’m still happy after watching the film although it could have been better. The film version is bogged down by too many expositions. Being a second-tier property, the filmmakers felt the need to over-explain the character’s origins. In the comic book world, Green Lantern first appeared in All-American Comics in 1940 and the character has evolved over time. Through the years, many Earthbound members have worn the powerful ring namely Alan Scott, Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, John Stewart, Kyle Raynor, and Jade. But Hal is the most popular of the bunch, so in the film version, we get to see his story. Hal, played by Ryan Reynolds, is a cocky test pilot who becomes the chosen one to wear the ring. You see, in our mysterious universe, there’s a powerful force that exists to protect our peace and justice. They are called the Green Lantern Corps. Warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order. But there’s a new enemy on the horizon called Parallax threatening to destroy the balance of power in the Universe. Now, the fate of mankind lies in the hands of Hal. But first, he must overcome his fears. Fear is ultimately the greatest villain in “Green Lantern.” In the film, yellow is the color of fear while green is the color of will. Hal is chosen for his pure willpower and determination. Director Martin Campbell, the guy who gave us “GoldenEye” and “Casino Royale,” trades his James Bond skills to go Green. As expected, Campbell is adept into bringing the larger-than-life action scenes into the big screen, but he’s weighted down by the uneven script. The screenplay, written by Greg Berlanti, Michael Green, Marc Guggenheim, and Michael Goldenberg, tried to cover a lot of the mythology surrounding “Green Lantern.” The result is a hyper-visualized movie that leaves some subplots behind. Besides Hal’s inheritance of the powerful ring, he must also deal with his daddy issues. He saw his father (John Tenney) killed in a test flight. And then there’s his childhood sweetheart, Carol Ferris (Blake Lively), who runs an aerospace company that Hal works for. But wait, there’s more! Hal must also worry about Hector Hammond played by Peter Sarsgaard who is covered in make-up resembling the character in 1985’s “Mask.” He’s the nerdy scientist who becomes the agent of Parallax on Earth. And then there’s also Thaal Sinestro (Mark Strong) the leader of the Green Lantern Corps. You got all that? The film did not succeed in finding the right balance to tell all the stories, but at least, Reynolds is game to don the Green suit. The filmmakers know that the actor’s strongest suit is in comedy so he’s given enough comic lines to take us to the next scene. Lively was actually believable as a co-owner of an aerospace company, while Sarsgaard was given unintentionally funny lines that did not help the actor emerged through gobs of make-up. But “Green Lantern” has enough excitement needed for viewers to enjoy the film in 3D. The production design is commendable, and once we learn the origins of our superhero, we are in for the long haul. “Green Lantern’s” light still shines brightly, my inner child is happy. He has made nearly 28 movies in just 25 years. Some of his films were good like “Traffic,” “Erin Brockovich,” and his groundbreaking “sex, lies, and videotape.” But some movies in Soderbergh’s oeuvre were just okay such as “The Good German” and “Full Frontal.” His latest film, the female-driven espionage thriller “Haywire,” falls somewhere in the middle. It’s a riveting action thriller with a formulaic plot. The main character is Mallory Kane (Gina Carano), a highly trained operative working for a government security contractor. The CIA trained her then betrayed her. Sounds familiar? It is like a female “Bourne” movie except Mallory remembers everything. But what keeps the film ticking along is Carano herself. Making her big blockbuster debut, the actress known as the “Face of Women’s Mixed Martial Arts” is predictably adept with her action scenes but also surprisingly holds her own against seasoned co-stars like Ewan McGregor and Michael Fassbender. After successfully freeing a Chinese journalist held hostage in Barcelona, Mallory discovers she’s being set up. The freed hostage is found murdered and all the evidence points to her as the suspect. Now, Mallory must cross multiple international borders to clear her name before time runs out. Will her plan go haywire? Perhaps knowing that Carano is an ingénue when it comes to acting, Soderbergh surrounds her with veteran actors. There’s the Golden Globe-nominated Fassbender as Paul, the suave but two-faced operative paired initially with Mallory. There’s also Antonio Banderas as Rodrigo, a shady Spanish government official. Channing Tatum also co-stars as Aaron, a member of Mallory’s team in Barcelona. Even Michael Douglas and Bill Paxton make an appearance. But my favorite is Ewan McGregor as Mallory’s boss and former lover, Kenneth. Scriptwriter Lem Dobbs, who previously worked with Soderbergh in 1991’s “Kafka” and 1999’s “The Limey,” conjured up some twist and turns in homage to Alfred Hitchcock. In describing “Haywire,” Soderbergh calls it “a Pam Grier movie made by Alfred Hitchcock.” While the execution of the movie is not entirely Hitchcockian, some of the elements attached to the legendary director are present such as the conceit of the woman who knew too much. Soderbergh directs the movie with enough heft and brevity that you will forgive some of its clichés. From Washington, D.C., to Barcelona and Dublin, this globetrotting thriller maximizes the use of its locales. Shot by Soderbergh himself, using the moniker Peter Andrews, “Haywire” employs each setting as a character in the movie. “Haywire” is a fun popcorn thriller that owes a lot to Carano’s skillset . You will believe that she can smack around anybody standing in her way. And yes, you will tap out in submission when witnessing her impressive fighting style. Simply put, Carano owns the film. Here's a summary from Yahoo: For Nick, Kurt and Dale, the only thing that would make the daily grind more tolerable would be to grind their intolerable bosses into dust. Quitting is not an option, so, with the benefit of a few-too-many drinks and some dubious advice from a hustling ex-con, the three friends devise a convoluted and seemingly foolproof plan to rid themselves of their respective employers...permanently. There's only one problem: even the best laid plans are only as foolproof as the brains behind them. Edgar" Movie Reviews

Movie Language: English

Movie Length: 2:30

Movie Synopsis:
This weekend, it's "Immortals" for action fans, and "J. Edgar" for biography buffs, two movies to choose from. "Immortals" tells the tale of the brutal and bloodthirsty King Hyperion and his murderous Heraklion army are rampaging across Greece in search of the long lost Bow of Epirus. With the invincible Bow, the king will be able to overthrow the Gods of Olympus and become the undisputed master of his world. With ruthless efficiency, Hyperion and his legions destroy everything in their wake, and it seems nothing will stop the evil king's mission. As village after village is obliterated, a stonemason named Theseus vows to avenge the death of his mother in one of Hyperion's raids. When Theseus meets the Sybelline Oracle, Phaedra, her disturbing visions of the young man's future convince her that he is the key to stopping the destruction. With her help, Theseus assembles a small band of followers and embraces his destiny in a final desperate battle for the future of humanity. And "J. Edgar" is of course about the life of J. Edgar Hoover, the man often credited with making the FBI what it is today: an efficient, crime-fighting organization shrouded in secrecy. Hoover founded the organization in 1935 and remained director until his death in 1972. But I only have one pick of the week! Which one? Take a look!

Link: click to watch
http://www.filmannex.com/movie/immortals-j-edgar-movie-reviews/29088/http://www.filmannex.com/movie/immortals-j-edgar-movie-reviews/29088/09 11 2011 21:27:39 +0000"Inception" Movie Review

Movie Title: "Inception" Movie Review

Movie Language: English

Movie Length: 2:30

Movie Synopsis:
My movie review of "Inception" from director Christopher Nolan starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

Link: click to watch
http://www.filmannex.com/movie/inception-movie-review/20542/http://www.filmannex.com/movie/inception-movie-review/20542/14 07 2010 23:48:46 +0000"Iron Man 2" Movie Review

Movie Title: "Iron Man 2" Movie Review

Movie Language: English

Movie Length: 2:30

Movie Synopsis:
My movie review of "Iron Man 2!"

Link: click to watch
http://www.filmannex.com/movie/iron-man-2-movie-review/19659/http://www.filmannex.com/movie/iron-man-2-movie-review/19659/06 05 2010 20:26:07 +0000"Jackass 3D" Interview with Wee Man, Ryan Dunn, and MORE!

Movie Title: "Jackass 3D" Interview with Wee Man, Ryan Dunn, and MORE!

Movie Language: English

Movie Length: 3:00

Movie Synopsis:
I loved meeting these funny "Jackass" folks!
