Around the World in 80 Days, 3 solar-electric powered cars completed their zero emissions race in Geneva. Having traveled the Americas, Africa, Asia and Europe, the race teams pronounced zero-emission vehicles here to be here now, reliable and economic for much broader use by the global population.

The Swiss team was declared the winner of this race, but in the classic film, "The Great Race" starring Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon and Natalie Wood and directed by Blake Edwards, think it was the Italian team that won the car race. Anyway, Tony Curtis won the girl.

Three electric vehicles crossed the finish line today (24 Feb) at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, winding up an 80-day zero emissions race.

The cars, powered by solar energy, travelled over 30,000 kilometres driving through fifteen countries. The race, described as the longest and greenest of all time, set a new record for electric vehicles.

One of the drivers Christine Haydon, said that her car were built by university students adding that the “message is to get the younger generation involved for their future and to be looking at making cars.”

The race began in the same place last August and crossed Europe, Russia, Kazakhstan, China, Canada, the United States (US) and Mexico. The drivers stopped at the UN Climate Change conference in Cancun in December.

The last leg went from Morocco, through Spain and France before returning to Geneva, Switzerland.

Teams from Australia, Germany and Switzerland completed the course, with the Swiss team declared the winner on the basis of reliability, energy efficiency, every day utility, design and safety.

Sergei Ordzhonikdze, Director General of the UN's Geneva Office, welcomed the teams back to the UN.

Race organizer, Louis Palmer said the few breakdowns during the race showed the technological viability of the vehicles. He added that “now it's up to the governments” as well as “the industry to produce them in masses because there's a huge demand.”
