Cities are Not Targets is theme of efforts through a petition drive and Mayors for Peace to abolish nuclear weapons.

Cities are Not Targets was initiated in 2007. Over one million signatures were obtained in the petition drive highlighting the role of civil society in the effort to eliminate nuclear weapons.

Mayors for Peace was born out of the tragedies of the nuclear explosions over Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In 1982, the mayors of those two cities started their campaign. Since, over 4,500 cities/towns have joined in over 150 countries for Asia, Africa, Europe, South America, North America and Oceania.
