Conversation with National Institutes of Health's Director Francis Collins

For this new interview in the Conversations with Giants in Medicine series, Francis Collins, a scientist who needs little introduction to the biomedical community, joins JCI Editor Ushma Neill for a conversation about his work and career.

After getting his PhD in Physical Chemistry at Yale and his medical degree at the University of North Carolina, Collins zeroed in on genetics as his area of concentration. He is noted for his landmark discoveries of disease genes, and later his leadership of the International Human Genome Project, which culminated in April 2003 with the completion of a finished sequence of the human genome. Since August 2009, Collins has served as the Director of the National Institutes of Health, the largest supporter of biomedical research in the world.
