Tachi Yamada joins Ushma Neill for another Conversation with Giants in Medicine. Born in Japan and trained in the US as a gastroenterologist, Yamada quickly rose to be the chairman of medicine at the University of Michigan. He moved to a career in industry and eventually became the Chairman of Research and Development at GlaxoSmithKline before then moving on to become the President of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Global Health Program. In this capacity, he oversaw $9B in programs, directed at addressing health challenges in the developing world. He has returned to industry to become the Executive Vice President of Takeda Pharmaceuticals. He talks here about the myriad challenges of running academic, industrial and non profit centers and how to have a successful and interesting medical career.
