Crime Scene X - Episode 1 - Internal Affairs - Interrogation

Hard-boiled detective Tony Rustic has been arrested for killing five unarmed civilians. His freedom, and possibly the safety of thousands of people, depend on making Internal Affairs’ officer Moses Dunn believe his story of zombies, aliens and a worldwide conspiracy. The problem? Rustic isn’t sure he believes it either.

FADE IN:

INT. INTERVIEW ROOM - NIGHT

TONY RUSTIC, an L.A. Detective, and MOSES DUNN, an Internal Affairs Officer, sit across a table from each other. Moses leans back reveals badge on belt and shoulder holster strapped to his side. He taps a cigarette out of a pack that lies on the table and rotates it between his fingers and then slides it into his mouth. He strikes a match across the surface of the table then lights up, taking one long drag. He holds the smoke in as he then stands the cigarette on its filter upright. He runs his fingers over an investigation folder as he slowly releases a stream of smoke in the direction of Rustic.

MOSES
Two weeks ago I was on a stake out
downtown where I had the privilege of watching an endless flow of carnal
depravity stiched together with the thread of decay. And who were we
waiting to catch in that debased
human patchwork quilt of miscreants
and perverts?

(studies Rustic)

MOSES
Just another detective on the greased
palm express. Stand out there in
the sewage long enough Detective and you are bound to get shit on you.

He picks up the cigarette and take
another drag.

MOSES (CONT'D)
This is the fourth time we've had
you in here in two years. That makes
it an an I.A. grand slam, but as I
remember it, you're not much into
baseball. Who the fuck knows why
they've let you skate before. Today's
a whole new ball game... whether you
play or not. Five dead, no weapons
found at the scene. I just got off
the phone with the DA who wants to
give you a one way ticket to Pelican Bay. I know you have a lot of old
friends that you did the same for.
Reunions can be a bitch.

Moses turns on a recorder. Rustic stares at the spinning take up reel. Then leans back in his chair.

RUSTIC
Look, Lieutenant. My job is pretty
simple. Guy breaks the law. I follow the evidence; interview the witnesses.
I catch the prep. He goes to jail.
If there are weapons involved, I use
mine. Equal force. No more, no less.
I've been doing this for twenty years.
Yes, there have been complaints, but
none have stuck. This time? I can't
even start to explain it. Shit, Moses!
Do you think I wanted to kill
those...those things! They used to
be people!

MOSES
Things that use to be people! I see
a big guilty sign hanging around
your neck.

Moses takes another drag on the cigarette and studies the
stream of smoke.

RUSTIC
You know it's popular these days to
believe in the bizarre, aliens,
ghosts, vampires, zombies. Everyone
has a story. It's all over television,
the movies. Everyone believes. Not
me. Then Tara starts investigating
those murders, the ones in the desert
last year. She tells me these crazy
stories. I still don't believe. Then
on some stupid interview, she's
killed, torn apart. I was there.

MOSES
Tara was your ex-partner.

RUSTIC
My ex-everything. (pause) After her
death, I just shut down a week, then
two, then three.

MOSES
I think your leaving something out
when you say shut down.

RUSTIC
What?

MOSES
The bottle and a half a day of Jack.

Rustic looks surprised.

MOSES (CONT'D)
I have the same job as you. I follow
the evidence; interview the witnesses.
I catch the prep. He goes to jail.

RUSTIC
Okay I went on a bender. So shoot
me... One day I just woke up. Back
at work, I take over the case, her
case. My choice. I follow the
evidence; interview the witnesses.
Just like always. But this time,
the evidence makes no sense, at least
not in my world. The witnesses are
batshit. They talk about snake men
in L.A., aliens in the desert, zombies
everywhere. No way any of it's true.
But what happens? I find out it is.

Moses pick up his cigarette.
