Bright Leaves
by Miami International Film Festival
Master film diarist-cum-essayist Ross McElwee (“Sherman’s March”) takes a trip to his native North Carolina and stumbles into a roundabout investigation into whether his great-grandfather, the creator of Bull Durham Tobacco, might be the inspiration for the Gary Cooper film “Bright Leaf.”En route, the film becomes a witty, moving meditation on filmmaking, the legacy of tobacco, father-son ties, and the transience of all things.
