Focus on the NATO Summit WITH_VO ENG

The Chicago media are mobilising their staff in the run-up to the NATO Summit on 20 and 21 May. The TV station ABC Chicago and the newspaper Polish Daily News have different approaches.
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is an intergovernmental military alliance based on the North Atlantic Treaty signed on 4 April 1949. NATO constitutes a system of collective defense in response to an attack by any external party. The NATO headquarters are in Brussels, Belgium.

With more than 50 reports on NATO produced since March , ABC Chicago is mobilizing its reporters and cameramen in the run-up to the NATO Summit.
The main issues are the organizational arrangements, security, and the impact on the city and its inhabitants. But the American TV station also wants to underline the importance of this Summit.

Leah Hope is one of the ABC reporters who will cover the Summit.
Along with thousands of other journalists, she will follow events on the inside, and interview Heads of State and official NATO representatives. For this reporter who has been working on this subject for months, the Summit, the largest ever in NATO’s history, is a big event for the city. She has a clear objective: to explain the purpose of this gathering to the people of Chicago.

« My goal is to really talk about the content and the discussion that is happening among the NATO leaders and the issues that are first and foremost for the Alliance and partners of NATO and how it will affect lives of Chicagoans and Americans. I think that Americans and Chicagoans may not feel connected on what is going on so far away. So my job and my challenge is to try to make all these issues relevant and interesting and trying to explain them in a way that's it's easy to understand. But I realise that there are very serious, very complicated issues that are going to be addressed, discussed and decided upon. So my challenge is to try and to condense some of that »

Leaders from more than 60 nations and other international organizations will be dealing with complicated issues such as transition in Afghanistan, strengthening NATO’s relations with partner nations throughout the world and how the Alliance will face the security challenges of the 21st century.
ABC will enlist extra reporters and cameramen to cover events all over the city. The TV station also trains its staff so that they can react to any situation.
At the Polish Daily News, a Chicago based newspaper, resources are more limited.
This publication, in Polish and English, is aimed at the Polish community in Chicago. The editor will be sending only one reporter to cover the Summit.

« We are sending one correspondent to cover the events, to make some pictures, to make some interviews with important people. Mostly with the president of Poland who will be also present at the summit. So it will be our main story but I think also we have to come back in the years to the events when Poland was invited to NATO »

And that was a big event for this newspaper. The editor even keeps a copy of that day’s paper.

With the Summit approaching, the US media are filling their pages with information on the event.
Social media is also abuzz over the Summit.
