Group of 77 is actually now more like 130 United Nations member states - a grouping started several decades earlier with the broad purpose of promoting developing/underdeveloped states/economies. By its sheer size and diversity, it is one of more representative groups at UN, but also one perhaps in need of direction, especially as global focus gradually moves toward "Rio+20."

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the President of the General Assembly Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser today urged the bloc of developing countries known as the Group of 77 and China to ensure that concrete and actionable measures are adopted at the forthcoming United Nations conference on sustainable development in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro.
