Harlem to Japan
Independent Films, Kids, Social Responsibility Movies
Group of first grade children from East Harlem Public School PS 112 delivered messages of sympathy and solidarity to the people of Japan today to United Nations headquarters in New York.
The messages were given to the United Nations (UN) Under-Secretary-General for Public Information and Communications Kiyo Akasaka – the message book will be delivered to the foreign ministry in Japan.
The initiative arose when teachers from the class realized the ongoing conversation their students were having in the aftermath of the tragedy in Japan.
Earlier, as a first step, the class had collected (US) 250 dollars which was donated to the Japanese Red Cross via the Consulate of Japan.
The visit to UN Headquarters allowed the children to become a bit more familiar with the organization and associate their fund raising and solidarity campaign with its aims and ideals.
