Kosovo UN-Organ Trafficiking?
Independent Films, Politics
The UN Security Council held debate Kosovo and its future, but much of the discussion fixated on alleged human organ trafficking. There is yet a report/investigation to come before the Council on the allegations beyond the original report from Dick Marty of the Council of Europe.
Perhaps the most interesting outcome of the debate is that the Kosovo Representative was seated and spoke at the Council even though Kosovo is not a Member State of the UN.
Enver Hoxhaj, Representative from Kosovo:
“Kosovo is very supportive of EULEX and the Kosovo Government sees this rule of law mission as its partner. We look to EULEX for its support in showing the radicals who reject peace and progress in Kosovo that that cannot beat back the tide of rule of law. EULEX has the resources and the capacity to make a difference in Kosovo. It can elevate the rule of law, strengthen the fights against corruption, and investigate former Swiss senator Dick Marty’s allegations of war crime that took place during the conflict.”
United Nations (UN) Special Representative in Kosovo Lamberto Zannier presented the Secretary-General’s latest report which takes note of Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe resolution on allegations of inhuman treatment of people and illicit trafficking in human organs in Kosovo.
Addressing the Security Council today (12 May), Zannier said “it is essential for these allegations to be subject to a thorough, impartial and independent investigation.”
The Secretary-General stated in the report that there is a need for an investigation as well as a strong witness protection programme and with the full cooperation of all relevant stakeholders. He added that the UN Mission in the Kosovo (UNMIK) stands ready to extend its full cooperation to any investigation that may be conducted.
Speaking after Zannier, Serbia’s Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremić said that the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) “was responsible for kidnapping hundreds of Serb civilians before, during and after the 1999 conflict” adding that “their internal organs were sold on the international black market.”
The Parliamentary Assembly report was prepared by Dick Marty, a Swiss member of the 47-member Council of Europe.
