New Haiti President-Michel Martelly
Independent Films, Politics
Michel Martelly has been pronounced based on "preliminary results" the winner of Haiti's Presidential elections. Results were greeter with celebration bu his supporters on Haiti's streets. Fortunately there appears to have been no violence by supporters of the losing candidate(s) in view of suggestion that fraud had previously delayed the vote count and announcement of winner.
Thousands of people took to the streets of Port-au-Prince Monday night (4 April) to celebrate Michel Martelly’s victory in Haiti’s Presidential election.
The former singer, who is also known as Sweet Micky, won more than 67 percent of second round’s votes according to the preliminary results announced yesterday by Haiti’s Electoral Council.
Martelly’s supporters celebrated in front of the Presidential Palace, next to one of the numerous IDP’s camps of the capital.
UPSOUND (Creole) Martelly’s Supporter:
“Yes, yes, yes, there is no one else, Martelly president!”
SOUNDBITE (Creole) Kately, Martelly’s Supporter:
“It’s Martelly and I am happy, because I voted for him”
Supporters gathered in popular areas as well as at Petionville’s commercial centre, singing and dancing to Sweet Micky’s songs.
The second round of this much contested election took place on 20 March after several days after riots and allegations of fraud followed the results of the first round.
These presidential and parliamentary elections are widely expected to bring stability in Haiti, still recovering the 2010 earthquake and an epidemic of cholera, which affected about 400 000 people.
