Nina

Poor, aimless and alone, waifish Nina (Guta Stresser) lives hand-to-mouth among the back alleys and dilapidated dwellings of Brazil’s São Paulo. She outfits herself with Goth-girl rage—jet-black clothes, thigh-high stockings and a T-shirt full of profanity. The sensory-numbing club world where Nina flees at night is her favorite escape from reality—that and the haunting black-ink sketches with which she fills her notebooks. For a fragile mind like Nina’s, it’s only a matter of time before those nightmarish artistic visions become psychological, muscling their way into her understanding of what is fantasy and what is tragically true. This ravishing Brazilian drama is an update of Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment.
