Poverty Goals-MDGs

Speaking at the launch of the 2011 Millennium Development Goals (MDGS) report today (7 July) in Geneva, United Nations (UN) Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said that the report painted a mixed picture.

He said the MDGs have made a tremendous difference, lifting hundreds of millions of people out of poverty, saving lives and ensuring that children attend school. “Despite the global economic downturn and the food and energy crises, we are on track to meet the MDG targets for poverty reduction,” Ban said.

But the report shows that progress had been uneven, with the poorest of the poor being left behind. “Now is the time for equity, inclusion, sustainability and women’s empowerment,” Ban said.

The Millennium Declaration, adopted by all 189 United Nations Member States in 2000, established eight MDGs and time-bound targets by which progress can be measured. The MDGs include eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, achieving universal primary education and reducing child mortality.
