Independent Films, Women, Web Series, Politics
Women Initiatives Group in coordination with United Nations agencies, non-governmental organizations and the Southern Referendum Commission (SSRC) organized an awareness campaign to educate southern Sudanese on how to vote in the upcoming referendum.
The campaign targeted all the remote areas where the southern people live.
Martin Walliam, a teacher involved in the campaign, has been involved in the various stages of the referendum process and is now training voters on how to vote.
Similarly Flip Nsyoun, also involved in the campaign, talked about educating people on the use of ballot papers. His co-worker Samuel Tor Major called the referendum a “democratic experience.”
Almost four million southern Sudanese have registered to vote in a milestone process of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement signed in 2005 to end a two decade war between north and south Sudan where close to two million people were killed and four million others displaced.
Sixty percent of those who registered are expected to turn up during the vote for it to be considered valid. Those voting are expected to vote for either unity or secession.
