INT. SURGICAL ROOM – HOSPITAL - DAY

Detective TZUME, black, African American, middle-aged, stares through the surgical room window, as surgeons surround his daughter ROSE on the operating table.

A bright surgical light hangs overhead masking the shadowy figures in lab coats near Rose’s bedside. The path of the bright light is interrupted by the surgeon’s face leaning over Rose, a surgical mask and cap disguise her face, only her deep concentrating eyes are exposed.

YOUNG FEMALE DOCTOR: (whispers) Don’t worry ROSE, you’re in good hands.

The surgeon’s gentle, reassuring eyes give comfort to Rose. She quickly glances to her right at the FEMALE ANESTHETIST injecting her with a needle as voices drown into a slow murmur.

Instruments pass back and forth overhead as everything turns to a blur. A SCALPEL slowly drops down. Darkness fades in.

A SCALPEL blade gently touches and pierces the soft skin. A thin red trail of blood emerges as the scalpel glides smoothly across its human canvas.

INT. UNIVERSITY LAB – DAY

The BLOOD LINE on the skin alters with an erratic movement of the surgeon’s hand. The scalpel lifts away from the skin to reveal an outline drawn in blue felt.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ (OS): Easy. Concentrate.

The SCALPEL retouches and flawlessly follows the blue line. KYLE, early twenties, stands over his patient lying on the table. PROFESSOR MORTEYZ, decked in a white lab coat, stands close by Kyle’s side and observes over his shoulder. Students in white lab coats at other tables fill the background.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ: Take out the lower rib to get it.
Probing. Searching.
KYLE: Almost got it.

ANNA, a young female lab student, Kyle’s sister, looks away while Kyle is engrossed in carrying out the procedures of the surgery. The NOISE of the small cutting tool rises in pitch.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ: Pay attention Anna. Don’t lose focus.

Anna regains her composure to focus her attention on the surgery.

KYLE: Pan.

Anna holds a steel pan over the body, fighting her inner emotions, as Kyle drops the piece of rib into the pan. Anna’s FACIAL expression goes grim trying to withhold her urge to throw up. The pan wavers. One hand covers her mouth.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ (OS): Anna, focus. Get through this.

Anna fixates her attention on the pan and tries to hold it steady with her right hand. Anna watches as a pair of tongs drop a bloody kidney onto the pan. Anna’s bodily reactions quickly overpower her mindset.

ANNA: Excuse me.

The pan CLANGS onto the floor as Anna dashes to the sink. COUGHING, GAGGING, and HACKING breaks the concentration of the class once again. The SOUND of running tap water soon provides the white noise missing within the room.

Professor Morteyz shakes his head as he makes his way to the corner of the room to address all students.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ: That’s it people, clean up and put the kidney on ice till morning.

Professor Morteyz shakes his head. Kyle passes by him.

KYLE: Professor, she’ll get used to it.

Anna wipes her FACE with the sleeve of her shirt as she works up her courage to face the Professor standing to the left of her. Kyle provides a barrier from the staring eyes of the Professor. He reaches out and slowly wipes off the leftover debris from her chin as a father would a child.

SHAWN’s sarcastic LAUGH raises Anna’s ire and attention. Shawn snickers from behind his video camera and slowly steps out from behind his operating table to approach Kyle and Anna. Shawn’s female lab partner watches in behind the scenes.

SHAWN: Can we get a smile from the great protégé of Professor Morteyz?

Shawn slowly circles Kyle and Anna with the camera, laughing. Kyle spins around and lunges into Shawn, the momentum of the tackle carries both of their bodies across the cold, hard polished lab floor. The video camera slides across the floor.

Kyle grabs hold of Shawn’s shirt collar and with the white knuckles of his fist exposed, he hoists Shawn up face to face.

KYLE: Even look at her the wrong way and //
PROFESSOR MORTEYZ (OS): Kyle!

The professor’s booming authoritative voice interrupts Kyle. Kyle pauses momentarily. As he locks eyes with Shawn, he shoves him hard back onto the floor and backs off.

Anna’s SOBBING disappears through the door of the lab as she swiftly exits. The CLOSING of the lab door fills the air. The room deadens to a silence. Kyle buries his face into his hands, sliding his hands through his hair in frustration. He glares back as Shawn slithers in retreat a few feet away.

SHAWN: You’re losing control Kyle.
PROFESSOR MORTEYZ (OS): Kyle. Come with me please.

Shawn locks stares with the Professor.

SHAWN: Control your boy Professor.

Kyle points down at Shawn staring over the shoulder of the professor as the professor escorts Kyle towards the door.

KYLE: We have unfinished business asshole.
SHAWN: Do what the good professor tells you Kyle.

A sarcastic LAUGH of arrogance fills the air.

INT. POLICE STATION - RECEPTION – DAY

Detective Tzume approaches the reception area. Clerk looks up.

DESK CLERK: Look what the cat dragged in! Morning Detective. Retirement been good to you?
DETECTIVE TZUME: Morning Sandy. Till now. (chuckles) Jones in yet?

He points to the office on the right where Det. Jones stands staring through the blinds. The blinds draw closed.

DETECTIVE TZUME: I see not much has changed.
DESK CLERK: Not much Detective, except you are sorely missed by everyone.
She glances towards Jones office and back at Det. Tzume.
DESK CLERK: Almost everyone.

Det Tzume crosses paths with an old acquaintance, his once young protégé Sheard leads a young female in cuffs.

INT. POLICE STATION – JONES OFFICE – DAY

Detective JONES sits behind an old desk. He pulls a folder and closes the file drawer as Det. Tzume enters without knocking.

DETECTIVE JONES: Tzume.
DETECTIVE TZUME: Jones.

Det. Jones slides his chair back losing control. Detective Tzume squirms in a chair not made to be comfortable.

DETECTIVE JONES: We have a couple problems.
DETECTIVE TZUME: New chairs?
DETECTIVE JONES: Bodies harvested, people dying, a publicity bomb about to go off and I haven’t had my coffee yet. Which one would you like to look after?

Detective Tzume is more focused on getting comfortable than Jones pressing issues. Jones slightly annoyed by the Det. Tzume.

DETECTIVE TZUME: I not a big fan of coffee, so I guess I’ll take harvesting body parts for 200.

Detective Tzume finally remains still.

DETECTIVE JONES: I didn’t pay you to come out of retirement to be funny Tzume.
DETECTIVE JONES: I was the happiest guy in here when you retired.(pause) Professor Morteyz.

Det. Jones nods to the folder sitting on the desk. Det. Tzume opens up the folder and flips through the papers.

DETECTIVE TZUME: Background?
DETECTIVE JONES: A renowned surgeon. Upset he lost his baby girl due to the system, an organ donor wasn’t found in time. (pause). Teaches at the University now and we believe he’s runs an underground harvest project with students.
DETECTIVE JONES: The university seems to be the start of a new harvest ground. You know the paranoia this would cause if it ever spread within the public.

Detective nods.

DETECTIVE JONES: Undercover agents as students will try to infiltrate any rings. We don’t want to scare them, just contain them. We are after information, not heroics.
DETECTIVE JONES: We take down the entire ring, even if it means a little collateral damage.
DETECTIVE TZUME: Collateral damage? Ahhh, good old philosophical battle of numbers versus one’s importance in life.
DETECTIVE JONES: Sometimes it comes down to a numbers game. I don’t write the rules.
DETECTIVE TZUME: No you don’t, detective. And I’m the happiest guy in here you don’t.

A mutual exchange of smirks pass between the men.

INT. KYLE’S APARTMENT – LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

The faint whisper of voices becomes clearer from a group of three sitting in a semi-circle, cross legged on the floor. TYRA, early 20’s, and Anna, sort through a pile of cards in front of them. Anna places one card in front of Kyle. Candles burn around them.

ANNA: We have a match.

Kyle holds up the card.

KYLE: Samantha, twenty years old, matching blood type, and a willing organ donor. What more can a guy ask for?

Kyle glances at Anna.

KYLE: A girl worth more dead than alive. Did you know … the human body is worth about 83 cents if broken down into precious metals?
ANNA: Thank you Professor Morteyz.

A smirk crosses Kyle’s face to Anna’s flattering sarcasm. Tyra leans over and passionately kisses Kyle in order to take control of the moment and make Anna uncomfortable.

ANNA: Save it for the mark tonight. I’m sure she’ll be looking for more than 83 cents worth.

Tyra stares at Anna waiting to lock in a threatening glare. Anna ignores Tyra as she sorts through the cards.

TYRA: I’ll have to find you a nice male mark to take that edge off you.

Anna glances up to exchange pleasantry smiles. Kyle ignorant of their sparring is deep in concentration.

KYLE: Professor Morteyz huh?

Anna glances at her watch and stands.

ANNA: Better get to the hospital. Good luck with the mark tonight.

Anna glances at Kyle then flashes a smile at Tyra as she exits.

ANNA: I can see my brother’s attraction to you now.

INT. HOSPITAL – RECEPTION DESK – NIGHT

Detective Tzume enters through the doors, removes his wet hat and brushes the raincoat off with his hands to help dry it. He approaches the receptionist counter. The receptionist looks up.

DETECTIVE TZUME: Rose Tzume?
RECEPTIONIST: She’s been moved to Room 103. Through the doors to the left.
DETECTIVE TZUME: Thank you.

Detective Tzume continues towards the hallway.

INT. HOSPITAL – SMALL BLOOD LAB ROOM – NIGHT

The blood VIAL MACHINE stops spinning, Anna opens the lid and removes blood vial tubes placing them into the tray. Anna grabs the tray of tubes from the counter and exits the small room.

INT. HOSPITAL – HALLWAY – NIGHT

Anna is blindsided by the detective. The tray of blood vials CRASH to the floor as he collides into Anna.

DETECTIVE TZUME: I'm so sorry. I didn't see ...

Anna gasps. He bends down to help gather the pieces of broken glass.

ANNA: It's okay. They've been tested. They are for disposal.

The detective sighs. He grabs a vial and cuts his hand on the broken glass. Anna gently takes his hand.

ANNA: Come with me.

Anna leads him around the corner to the small blood room.

INT. HOSPITAL – SMALL BLOOD LAB ROOM – NIGHT

Anna enters with the detective in tow.

ANNA: Coat please.

Det. Tzume removes his coat and sits down in the chair. Anna places cotton gauze on the cut of the forefinger.

ANNA: Squeeze. I need to get a blood sample from you. It'll only take a sec.

Anna hunts through the cupboards. She pulls out a syringe. Anna prepares the syringe for a blood sample. The detective stares straight ahead, deep in thought. Anna outstretches the detective’s arm. Anna rolls up his sleeve and prepares his arm. Detective’s STARES ahead.

ANNA: I don’t like the sight of blood either.

The detective turns towards Anna and focuses his stare on her.

DETECTIVE TZUME: Sorry. A lot on my mind. My daughter Rose just had surgery.
ANNA: Rose. Yes.
ANNA: Sickle cell anemia. She just had a recent kidney transplant.

The detective’s FACE flinches from Anna taking a sample.

DETECTIVE TZUME: You know a lot.
ANNA: Amazing what you get to know about a person through their blood sample.

Anna holds up the syringe full of blood and SMILES.

ANNA: All done. You’re free to roam the hallways!

Detective Tzume grabs his coat, stands in the doorway and turns. Det. Tzume holds his raincoat draped over his left arm.

DETECTIVE TZUME: Sorry about the tray.

Detective Tzume faces the hall and pauses in hesitation.

ANNA (OS): Room 103. Down the hall to the left.

Detective acknowledges with a raise of his hand and disappears.

INT. HOSPITAL – ROSE’S ROOM

His EYES stare at Rose lying on the bed with tubes coming out of her nostrils. Calm face, closed eyes. The machine beeps beside her. Red numbers flash on and off. Tubes run off her arm connected to a drip. The bag nears empty. Detective Tzume sits in a chair at Rose’s bedside.

A nurse enters the room. Name tag CAROL.

NURSE CAROL: Hello!
DETECTIVE TZUME: Evening Carol.

Detective Tzume’s focus returns to his daughter.

NURSE CAROL: Evening Detective.

She momentarily stares at Rose lying helpless.

NURSE CAROL: She’s a fighter.

Detective Tzume looks up at her as she changes the drip bag.

DETECTIVE TZUME: Like her mother.
NURSE CAROL: Never lose hope. I pray for her every night. And for you.

The detective cracks a smile.

DETECTIVE TZUME: Thank you.

An announcement over the p.a. system blares through hallways – “VISITING HOURS ARE NOW OVER.” The nurse looks at Det. Tzume.

NURSE CAROL: As always I make exceptions for you! Let me know when she wakes.

She closes the door behind her. The image of her leaving is a blur through the drip bag.

INT. CLUB - BAR – NIGHT

Kyle slides his bottle out of the way to observe Shawn across the room with a young beautiful female ‘mark’ sitting on a high stool at the bar. Shawn’s back to the bar, and female ‘mark’ facing him, Shawn leans in to deliver his pick up pitch.

The success of Shawn’s pitch is evident by the bartender’s reaction behind the bar. The bartender’s intuition holds true as Shawn soon leaves the bar shaking his head in frustration.

The bartender watches Kyle strut out from the crowd across the room and head towards the bar for what seems to be mission impossible. The bartender smiles at the next approaching victim.

The old burly bartender taps down two empty shot glasses on the bar. Kyle reaches the bar as the bartender pours the second shot glass and slides them at Kyle.

Kyle digs in his coat pocket. The bartender lifts his hand. The young lady bashful of the game the bartender plays for his own enjoyment, smiles as she’s being set up once again.

BARTENDER: (winks) On the house. Good luck.

Kyle nods to the bartender’s goodwill. The bartender chuckles and turns his attention to his next drink, without taking his ears off the conversation about to be had.

Kyle glances at SAMANTHA. She smiles. He slides a shot glass her way.

KYLE: Shall we?

They tap shot glasses and shoot them back. Kyle remains silent and watches the bartender. Kyle’s incessant silent and staring treatment makes the bartender grow uncomfortable with his game.

Samantha chuckles at Kyle’s sportsmanship with the bartender.

Two beer appear in front of Kyle. Kyle takes a swig as the burly bartender stands in lieu of payment behind the bar.

BARTENDER: The shots were free. Not the beer.

Kyle’s grin turns to laughter as he slides a bill into the bartenders tip jar. The camaraderie quickly restored.

BARTENDER: Thank you, sir.

Samantha breaks the silence and reveals her cards as a girl in need of attention. Kyle’s silence paying dividends.

SAMANTHA: What can you give me that any other man in here couldn’t?
KYLE: I could steal your heart in about two minutes.
SAMANTHA: Let me guess, you’re a doctor too.
KYLE: Practicing medical student, but one day, yeah. Kyle.
SAMANTHA: You’re all the same. If you aren’t a doctor, you’re a lawyer. (pause) SAMANTHA.
KYLE: Pleasure Sam.

Like a wild animal set on defending it’s established territory, Tyra quickly approaches Kyle off the dance floor. Tyra catches Kyle off guard squeezing between Samantha and him.

Tyra faces Samantha as she grinds her backside into Kyle to the beat of the music, locking eyes with Samantha.

She turns, wraps her arms around Kyle’s neck and laughs. Tyra, twists and looks over Samantha seductively, then tilts her head back towards Kyle and yelling loud enough so both parties can hear.

TYRA: You having fun yet?

Tyra glances back at Samantha and back to Kyle.

TYRA: I know of a good party, see if your new lady friend wants to join the fun. This place is getting stale.

She laughs as she releases her hold and brushes up to Samantha and whispers to her.

TYRA: Don’t worry, he’s harmless.

She slides away and disappears onto the dance floor.

Samantha leans into Kyle.

SAMANTHA: Close friend?

INT. CLUB – DANCE FLOOR – NIGHT

An old brick wall of the heritage building serves up the perfect backdrop to Tyra’s suggestive dance moves on the raised stage.

The dance moves gather the sole attention of the immediate crowd around her. Her dancing attracts Kyle’s curiosity to the edge of the dance floor. Samantha in tow to Kyle.

Tyra pulls out and sets the two opposing chairs about ten feet apart in the open dance floor. She dances near the edge of the crowd. Tyra pulls Kyle out and sits him down.

Tyra roams the edges in search of the second participant. Shawn catches her attention and she suggestively leads him over to the second opposing chair.

TYRA: You say you want to be doctors, let’s see which one of you boys can give me the best physical.

The crowded room roars with applause. Tyra rips off Shawn’s shirt, then dances over to Kyle. FACES of girls scream for more in the audience. Samantha’s face fills with laughter as she claps and cheers for more.

Tyra performs a lap dance for Kyle, then shifts her attention to Shawn. She takes off her shirt down to only a bra and rising mini skirt as she performs a lap dance for Shawn.

Tyra quickly shifts her attention back to Kyle once his jealousy becomes apparent for all to see. She dances her way over to Kyle and seats him back down in his chair giving him control back from Shawn. The song ends.

Tyra sits in Kyle's lap. Arms looped around his neck.

TYRA: Where’s your new friend? I like her. It’ll be just us three tonight, my love.
KYLE: I’ll handle it. I’ll meet up with you when I’m done.

Tyra stands and abruptly storms off. Kyle eyes Samantha as she slowly makes her way to him.

KYLE: Told you this place had dancing!

Samantha laughs.

KYLE: Let’s get out of here and get to know each other.
SAMANTHA: I barely know you.
KYLE: Get to. I promise I won’t steal your heart.
SAMANTHA: What have I got to lose?

INT. CLUB – BAR – NIGHT

The bartender places a bottle in front of Shawn at the bar as Shawn watches Samantha leave. Shawn flicks a bill across the bar at the bartender who refuses Shawn’s money and motions towards Kyle.

Kyle locks sight of Shawn from end of the bar and smiles. Kyle mocks Shawn, motions a frame with his hands and rolls one hand in the air to indicate to start filming, turns, and exits.

Shawn bangs the bottle down on top of the counter in frustration.
Shawn spots Tyra’s reaction at the bar as she watches Kyle leave with Samantha.

Shawn approaches Tyra with a couple shots in hand. They down the shots and he leans over to whisper into her ear. Shawn’s moves conquer his prey as she smiles a devilish grin.

INT. BATHROOM – DAY

Samantha’s EYES slowly open. She moans and begins to move. Melted ice CRUNCHES and SWOOSHES in the tub around her nude body.

A cell phone lies on the edge of the bathtub with a note.
INSERT: ‘DIAL 911. DON’T STAND UP’

Samantha lies face up. She gradually gains consciousness. She panics and hyperventilates before calming down. Still groggy.
Everything comes in and out of focus.

Trembling, she looks around the room. She picks up the phone. Her arm trembles from the cold as she dials 911.

ATTENDANT (VO): Police, ambulance or fire?
SAMANTHA: I don’t know. I’m lying in a tub of ice. I don’t know where I am.
ATTENDANT (VO): Stay calm. What’s your name?
SAMANTHA: My side hurts.
ATTENDANT (VO): Stay calm. Tell me your name?
SAMANTHA: Samantha.
ATTENDANT (VO): Samantha, don’t move an ambulance is on it’s way?

Samantha slowly twists her torso and slides her HAND down her side to the protruding tube sticking out of her body.

The cell phone falls from her hand onto the floor.

ATTENDANT (VO): Samantha?

Samantha leans over the side of the tube. She twists her body enough to see the tube. Panic sets in as she paws at the tube to swipe it off her body. Samantha GRABS THE TUBE with one hand and pulls. DARKNESS as she passes out.

INT. HOSPITAL ROOM – SAMANTHA’S ROOM - NIGHT

Samantha slowly awakes. The fuzzy images of a YOUNG FEMALE DOCTOR and Detective Tzume come into focus end of the bed.

YOUNG FEMALE DOCTOR: It’s okay Samantha. You’ll be okay. The detective needs to ask you a couple questions.
DETECTIVE TZUME: Samantha, do you remember anything from that night?

Samantha groggily lifts her hand to her forehead and slides her fingers through her hair as she fades unconscious.

YOUNG FEMALE DOCTOR: Still pretty drugged up as you can imagine. She’s been through a hell of an ordeal.
DETECTIVE TZUME: Why would people do this?

She glances up at the detective.

YOUNG FEMALE DOCTOR: Desperation. Demand exceeds supply. Matter of life and death. The system fails them, so they look elsewhere. The black market provides that easy avenue. Unfortunately, someone else has to pay for it.
DETECTIVE TZUME: So much for ethics in this day and age.

The young female doctor looks up at the Detective.

YOUNG FEMALE DOCTOR: Ethics mean nothing if you’re dead Detective. (pause) You look familiar. Your wife.
DETECTIVE TZUME: Two years ago.
YOUNG FEMALE DOCTOR: I remember. I was just doing my internship at the hospital. She was on the waiting list for a kidney correct?

Detective nods.

YOUNG FEMALE DOCTOR: She had a rare blood type and Sickle Cell Anemia. I left the hospital to complete my studies and never knew what happened.

She looks at the detective.

YOUNG FEMALE DOCTOR: The patient list this morning listed a Ms. Tzume.
DETECTIVE TZUME: She found a donor at the last minute. A perfect match.
YOUNG FEMALE DOCTOR: You know the odds of finding a match for her were like a million to one. She’s lucky …

The doctor’s interest is solely focused on the detective lifting up his shirt revealing an incision on the side of his body.

DETECTIVE TZUME: She lived another 47 hours, 2 minutes, and 31 seconds. Her body rejected the kidney.

The young doctor stands in shock.

YOUNG FEMALE DOCTOR: Tzume. I just saw a patient named Tzume in hospital.
DETECTIVE TZUME: My daughter. She recently had a kidney transplant.
YOUNG FEMALE DOCTOR: Same rare blood type as her mother?
DETECTIVE TZUME: Yes. A donor was found but her body is in rejection.

Detective sighs.

YOUNG FEMALE DOCTOR: I have to change her dressing.
DETECTIVE TZUME: I could use some fresh air.
YOUNG FEMALE DOCTOR: Back alley. Spot where all the doctors and nurses step out. Take my security card to get back in.

The young female doctor tosses him her security card. The detective holds up the card and laughs.

DETECTIVE TZUME: You think I’ll get asked?
YOUNG FEMALE DOCTOR: Things move so fast around here Detective, no one has time to look.

EXT. HOSPITAL – BACK ALLEY – NIGHT

Detective Tzume exits for a breath of fresh air. A doctor signals to hold the door as she finishes her smoke and flicks it into the alley. The doctor brushes past into the hospital. The door CLINGS shut.

The alley grows quiet. Still. A homeless person scurries out like a rat from behind a dumpster to retrieve the butt end of the smoldering cigarette.

Det. Tzume watches as the homeless guy disappears around the corner of the dumpster.

The CLICK of the door distracts the Detective to two nurses out on a break and lighting up. The detective approaches the nurses.

DETECTIVE TZUME: Excuse me.

The nurse exhales cigarette smoke, taps her ash and finishes.

DETECTIVE TZUME: I just stepped out myself, my daughter is in hospital.
NURSE #1: Come on buddy, we heard all these lines before. Look at you. And what are you doing with a doctor’s id badge?
DETECTIVE TZUME: Ladies, I just want to bum a couple smokes off you for my friend and I.
NURSE #2: I don’t see no friend. Just you.
DETECTIVE TZUME: No, he’s right over there, behind the dumpster.

The detective turns and points to the dumpster.

NURSE #1: Scram. We don’t have time for you homeless trash. Get a job, get your own cigarettes.

The detective reaches into his coat pocket, the nurses quickly raise their hands.

NURSE #1: Mister, no one has to get hurt. We’ll give you a cigarette.
DETECTIVE TZUME: No, no … I’m ...

Nurse 2 nudges the other to anti up so they can clear out. The detective plays the game and lets them assume what they will.

NURSE #2: Here you go.
DETECTIVE TZUME: I’d like another. I need two. For my friend and I.

The nurse fumbles for a second cigarette from the package and then a lighter. She reaches out to pass two cigarettes and a lighter.

DETECTIVE TZUME: Lit?

She lights the cigarette, COUGHING and HACKING because it’s his first time. The nurses look at one another and dash for the door.

DETECTIVE TZUME: Thanks. Filthy habit anyway.

Detective Tzume laughs to himself as he makes his way back to the dumpster.

Detective Tzume peers around the corner of the dumpster. The homeless man takes a swig from his flask and tucks it back into his coat pocket.

DETECTIVE TZUME: That stuff will kill ya.

The homeless guy smiles and coughs. Detective Tzume kneels down beside him and offers his hand. Sir William sits playing his harmonica with a small pile of cigarette butts laying beside him which he collected earlier that evening. Sir William appears to draw great comfort as he sits playing an off key, poorly arranged self made piece on his harmonica.

HOMELESS GUY: Hey, sorry about that, I like to blow a little on this thing. Takes the edge off you know …
DETECTIVE TZUME: Yeah, no worries. I play a little myself. It’s good for the soul.
DETECTIVE TZUME: Name’s Tzume.
HOMELESS GUY: SIR WILLIAM.

Detective Tzume notices the pile of used cigarette butts neatly piled on the ground. The detective hands him the cigarettes.

Sir William flashes a friendly smile of dirty teeth and winks. The detective smiles and pats Sir William on the shoulder. Sir William lifts the harmonica in offering.

DETECTIVE TZUME: May I?
SIR WILLIAM: Not often I get to listen to someone else play.

Detective Tzume starts to play. The sweet harmonic sounds fill the alleyway. Sir William lifts the cup up in salute. Sir William reaches into his coat pocket and offers a swig to the detective.

DETECTIVE TZUME: No thanks, I gave that up long time ago.
SIR WILLIAM: God bless you. There was a day when it mattered.

Sir William takes a swig from the flask.

SIR WILLIAM: Cigarette?
DETECTIVE TZUME: I tell you what buddy, I don’t really smoke these things, here’s one for later.
SIR WILLIAM: I used to be just like you. What kinda car you drive? Big fancy one I bet. I used to be an executive, a while back. Nice car, house, and a wife, 2 big old dogs and a fancy job to boot. You bet your ass I did.
SIR WILLIAM: I just got tired of greedy bosses, bankers, mortgage payments, car payments, loan payments, visa payments, screwed up family and not having a dime more than I got fixed in my pocket right now.
SIR WILLIAM: I say take me whenever you’re ready dear Lord!! I bought my ticket and I want in.
DETECTIVE TZUME: How long you been living out here?
SIR WILLIAM: Long enough to know I don’t want any part of all those hypocrites and political geniuses running me around like a scared rat. You mean now or all together?
DETECTIVE TZUME: All together?
SIR WILLIAM: I lived on the street when I was a kid. Then one day I woke up and thought I wanted to be somebody. I surprised the shit outta everybody. Did the whole nine yards, just like I told ya. I just got fed up with it all and finally just said that’s it. I’m done. I’m outta here. And here I am. Whatcha see is whatcha get. I don’t owe anybody nothing.
DETECTIVE TZUME: I envy you. I admire you too. Well, looks I gotta go. Take care of yourself.

Det. Tzume disappears back into the building.

INT. HOSPITAL – EXT. ROSE’S ROOM – DAY

Detective Tzume peers through the window at Rose strapped down on the bed. A father’s helpless look of despair. The detective entranced into deep thought as he stares at Rose.

INT. HOSPITAL – FLASHBACK – INT. ROSE’S ROOM – NIGHT

Rose’s EYES are closed. Flashbacks of the night events.

Shot of Rose pulling tube out of nose, bleeding.
Shot of Rose grabbing and fiercely rattling bedrails.
Shot or Rose in pain, curling up, screaming from pain.
Shot of Rose sitting up crying, losing control from pain.
Shot of Rose calling for papa.
End of Flashback.

INT. HOSPITAL – EXT. ROSE’S ROOM – DAY

YOUNG FEMALE DOCTOR (OS): Detective.

The young female doctor fast approaches. Both stare at Rose lying peacefully, strapped down.

YOUNG FEMALE DOCTOR: Rose had a rough night. We had to restrain her so she didn’t do any further harm.

The detective gives her an inquisitive look.

YOUNG FEMALE DOCTOR
She kept pulling out her intravenous tubes. We had to do it to protect her.

EXT. ALLEYWAY – HOSPITAL - NIGHT (20) N3

SOUNDS of an argument in the alleyway wake Sir William from his sleep. He peers around the corner of the dumpster. Shawn and Kyle stare each other down midway down the dark alley.

SHAWN
This black market trade is a bitch isn’t it Kyle. You’re encroaching on my territory.

KYLE
Competition is healthy for you.

Alley lights silhouette the profiles of Shawn and Kyle in a stare down, inches away from each other.

SHAWN
Your weakness is my strength. Scavenging what you leave is fair game. You left some perfectly good organs in her. Waste is not a good thing Kyle.

KYLE
Stick to your own marks.

SHAWN
Come to the other side Kyle, you might like it. You’ll never be like the professor, Kyle, never. We could be powerful together.

Kyle grabs Shawn and wrestles him to the ground. Kyle looks down at Shawn as he chokes him to his final breath, then lets go. Kyle stands up staring down at Shawn on the ground coughing. The cough turns to a loud sadistic laugh.

SHAWN
You can’t kill Kyle. It’s a weakness that will come to haunt you. Everyone has their breaking point Kyle, everyone. You’re no good to the professor if you can’t kill Kyle.

SHAWN
To feel the adrenalin rush of taking someone’s life instead of saving it is as close as you’ll come to playing God.

SHAWN
You’ve had a taste. Once you get blood on your hands, you can’t stop it, can you Kyle? You’re no different than me.

A scrape of the garbage dumpster panics Kyle. Kyle looks in the direction of the dumpster, sees nothing, and disappears into the darkness of the alley.

Shawn lies on the ground, staring at the dumpster in a dirty alley. The mood of the alley grows eerily quiet. Light reflects off puddle surfaces. Garbage strew around the alley.

Sir William scrunches up like a scared spider behind the dumpster for protection. The silence haunting. Sir William reaches out and grasps the side of the dumpster, his FACE slowly peers around the corner into an empty alleyway.

He relaxes and drops back into a sitting position to come face to face with Shawn. Shawn holds a knife to the Sir William’s throat. Shawn encroaches inches from Sir William’s face.

SHAWN
Tongues have a tendency to talk. You know, cutting out someone’s tongue will cause them to bleed to death, choking on their own blood.

Sir William shudders in fear, his face wretched with fear. Shawn slides the side of the cold knife blade along Sir William’s ear.

SHAWN
Ears have a tendency to hear things they aren’t supposed to. Maybe we should cut off your ears so you don’t eavesdrop.

Shawn’s crazed EYES stare coldly into Sir William’s. The moment of fear interrupted by a rumbling SOUND of skateboard wheels entering the alleyway. A homeless kid, TUCK, stops in front of them. Shawn’s deep cold eyes stare through him. Tuck stands frozen, terrified. A soft leather bag slung over his shoulder.

SHAWN
Homeless people everywhere. No one would miss you. Society is blind to you. I could cut you up right here.

SHAWN
(threatening low voice)
What you staring at kid?

Tuck signs with his hands and makes strange sounds because of deafness. Shawn looks at Sir William as the homeless deaf kid kneels down and unties the soft leather bag, loaded with most of his life’s belongings. Shawn releases Sir William and twists around and draws the knife towards Tuck.

Sir William lunges up to stop him, Shawn throws him hard up against the dumpster. Tuck pulls out some change and gestures to Shawn to take it in exchange for his friend’s life. Shawn laughs. Shawn reaches into the coat of Sir William and grabs the bottle. He leans in close to Sir William.

SHAWN
I admire your willingness to save each other.

Another homeless person pushes their cart through the alley staring at Shawn. Shawn stares into Sir William’s eyes.

SHAWN
If you talk, you’ll end up like your friend. I’ll cut out your tongue and cut off your ears.

Shawn stands and slaps the outreaching hand of Tuck. Change falls and HITS the ground. Shawn laughs and starts to walk away but suddenly turns and throws the bottle against the dumpster just above Sir William’s head.

Pieces of the broken bottle fall over Sir William curled on the ground in protection. Shawn turns and struts away down the alleyway. A sadistic laugh echoes throughout the alley.

INT. HOSPITAL – ROSE’S ROOM – NIGHT (21) N3

The young female doctor rushes into the room.

YOUNG FEMALE DOCTOR
Detective, please hurry.

The detective rushes out after the young female doctor.

INT. HOSPITAL – SAMANTHA’S ROOM – NIGHT (22) N3

The detective and young female doctor rush in.
The bewilderment on the Detective’s FACE says it all.

YOUNG FEMALE DOCTOR (OS)
She’s dead. They came back to finish the job. They even cut out her tongue.

Focus still on the detective’s face.

DETECTIVE TZUME
My God. They took all her organs.

EXT. HOSPITAL – BACK ALLEY - NIGHT (23) N3

The WHEELS of a shopping cart rattle to every glitch in the pavement. Sir William HUNCHES OVER slowly pushing his cart.
His EYES catch Shawn’s exit into the alley, with a blue cooler.

Sir William’s pace quickens to follow an appropriate distance behind.
INT. KYLE’S APARTMENT – KITCHEN - NIGHT (24) N3

Tyra and Anna sit at the kitchen table studying.

TYRA
Do you think Kyle loves me?

ANNA
Why don’t you ask him?

TYRA
I see him with some of these marks and I wonder sometimes. He must talk to you about me.

ANNA
No. Not really.
(pause) (looks up at Tyra)
I mean, we don’t talk much.

The sound of a key into the door lock breaks the tension between the girls. Kyle enters and dumps a whack of money in the middle of the table. Sits with elbows on the table, crossed. Looking.

KYLE
We have a problem.

Tyra grabs for the money. She is obsessed with the pile of money as she thumbs through the wads of cash.

TYRA
Only if the problem is too much money. Look at this.

Kyle grabs the money away from her and tucks it back into bag. He hands her a small ration.

KYLE
You know the deal Tyra.

Kyle leans back in the chair in view of both girls.

KYLE
He knows.

Concern grows across the faces of Tyra and Anna.

KYLE
Shawn. He’s on to us and wants in.

ANNA
We can’t let him in Kyle. He’ll destroy us if he finds out what’s really going on.

KYLE
I know. I have to think. He won’t let this go until he finds out.

TYRA
Maybe it’s easier to play with him than against him.

Kyle flashes a jealous stare at Tyra.

KYLE
Playing him into his own trap definitely appeals to me. Play
his game against him.

TYRA
Or … let a woman handle it.

Kyle scoffs at the suggestion.

Tyra unbuttons a couple buttons on her blouse, stands up and straddles herself over Kyle’s lap.

TYRA
The secret to every man’s weakness is between his legs.

Tyra leans in close to Kyle’s ear.

TYRA
(whispers)
Every man’s.

TYRA
I know how to get a rise out of you. It would be like any other mark.

INT. LECTURE HALL – UNIVERSITY – DAY (25) D4

Professor Morteyz prowls the stage corner to corner, stalks the body of students in front of him, waving his hands in the air for emphasis of his latest point.

Kyle leans over towards Anna and whispers to her. Anna glances over at Shawn who sits adjacent at the end of the same aisle, focused on videotaping the Professor’s every move on stage.

The CLUNK of the door latch breaks the Professor’s sermon. AMANDA SINGLETON enters, wearing an unbelievably short skirt, walks over to the professor handing him a note, and ascends the middle aisle stairs. She balances a late lunch of fries and gravy in her left hand, a binder tucked under her right arm.

Professor Morteyz stands directly behind her watching her every move, astonished by the rude interruption.

Eyes follow the sway of her fluid body movements under a mini skirt and short top. She comes to rest in the empty chair next to Kyle at the edge of the aisle. Anna turns and stares into the lens of Shawn’s camera focused in their direction. Shawn motions with a wave of his hand so Anna would move in order to get a clear shot of Amanda. She flashes him the finger. The camera drops to reveal Shawn’s serious face turn into laughter.

Kyle acknowledges Amanda with a smile and she flashes a flirtatious smile back. Kyle stares at the fries as Amanda slowly eats a fry without realizing she is now a focal point.

Silence fills the room. All eyes watch Professor Morteyz as he takes a deep breath and releases it. The sense of tension in the air precedes Professor Morteyz’s next line.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
Almost looks good enough to eat.

Snickers across the room burst into laughter.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
Miss?

Amanda looks at Kyle.

AMANDA
AMANDA SINGLETON.

Her attention returns to the professor at the front of the room.

AMANDA
Sorry Professor.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
Miss Singleton. This is not a lunch room.

Amanda ditches the plate of fries under her seat.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
5 minutes Miss Singleton. Please come join me on stage Miss Singleton.

Amanda’s face blushes.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
Don’t be shy. Please.

A moment passes before Amanda stands up and confidently makes her way down to the stage. The room takes on a different tone as Professor Morteyz greets her as a gentleman and takes her hand.

Anna glances over to notice Shawn’s fascination of new material to film. Professor Morteyz puts his arm around her shoulder as they remain stationary facing the students at the stage front.

A shift of power floats in the air, resting over the students.

He leads her backwards towards the center of the stage, as he places his feet behind hers causing her to awkwardly stumble back, yet holding her with his arm to control her balance from falling.

Professor Morteyz signals with his index finger in the air, as though he finally remembers what he was thinking. He grabs a stool from the side of the stage and places it center stage and motions in welcoming fashion for Amanda to sit on the stool.

Amanda uncomfortably sits on the stool as the room falls hush.

A transition of five minutes time show on the clock and on the faces of fellow students. Professor Morteyz meticulously watches the last few seconds of his watch TICK away and glances up.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
The class thanks you for five minutes of YOUR time Miss ?

AMANDA
Singleton.

The professor comforts her with a reassuring arm over her shoulder. Professor Morteyz whispers to her in close so the lapel mic doesn’t pick up his speech.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
(whispers)
This is MY stage Miss Singleton. My stage. Please respect that.

He drops his arm to release her back into the crowd. Amanda scoots back to her seat without the confidence she first had.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
Simply listen, watch and learn. There are no tests in my class.

Amanda takes her seat beside Kyle avoiding eye contact with any one in the room. Staring down into her lap.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
Please thank Miss Singleton to give us an example of how long five minutes can mean … to a bedridden patient … to a surgeon during surgery.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
Next lecture Miss Singleton will be our first presenter on blood disorder. You will find your partner to the right of you.
(pause)
Last week we were discussing blood type.

The professor drowns out as he paces before the room. The attention of the students hangs on his every word, like a television evangelist running his sermon.

Kyle looks over at Amanda staring down at her hands clasped in front of her.

KYLE
Your place or mine?

Amanda quickly glances up and flashes a quick smile.

Anna looks to her right.

Shawn sits alone at the opposite end of the row videotaping the professor. Shawn glances over to acknowledge her with a smile. Anna’s FACE nervously tenses.

INT. KYLE’S APARTMENT – LIVING ROOM - DAY (26) D4

Anna paints at the easel as Kyle and Tyra enter.

KYLE
Just got word we have another one to do tonight.

ANNA
I’ll meet you there after I see Shawn.

A concerned look crosses Tyra’s face.

TYRA
Why are you seeing Shawn?

KYLE
Study partner for a blood type project.

ANNA
Didn’t have much choice in the matter thanks to Professor Morteyz.

Anna stares at Tyra.

ANNA
Why are you showing so much concern?

TYRA
Just worried about your safety.
The guy is really different.

Kyle studies Tyra.

ANNA
Sure you’re worried. Is there something we should know Tyra?

TYRA
Forget I even cared.

Anna breaks a smile.

ANNA
There’s the Tyra I know. You had me worried you were getting soft on us.

Anna stands up to leave.

ANNA
Meet you later. I have to go meet my new study partner.

Anna smiles at a rattled Tyra before she exits.

INT. STAIRWELL / SHAWN’S APT BLDG – DAY (27) D4

Anna climbs the stairwell. MUSIC echoes throughout the hallway. Anna approaches the door ajar, KNOCKS as she opens the door to go inside.

INT. SHAWN’S APT – DAY (28) D4

ANNA
Hello …

The bareness of the apartment doesn’t phase her. Her eyes slowly make their way around the room till they rest on all the video tapes sprawled over the old wooden table.

A laptop spiels out the music through attached speakers. Anna taps the keyboard to silence the racket. Anna’s FACIAL expression changes as video footage plays of her. Anna’s voice echoes through the speakers.

SHAWN (OS)
I know a lot about you Anna.

Anna jumps in fright as Shawn’s face brushes up close to hers. Shawn grasping her shoulders firmly as they stare at the screen.

SHAWN
(whispering)
I watch you. Your graceful moves.
(pause) The way you talk. I feel your attraction when our eyes meet.
Anna relaxes allowing Shawn to gently turn her body to face him, thinking he’s convincing her. Shawn’s face moves closer to her, she tilts her head as if entranced and ready to kiss.

SHAWN
We could be great together.

Shawn leans in. A sudden knee to the groin drops Shawn. He lies on the floor grabbing his crotch area, gasping for air, coughing.

Anna pulls up a chair, seats herself and opens up her book in her lap. Shawn rolls on the ground moaning in pain. Intermittent glances shoot her way, but the pain doesn’t allow him to respond.

ANNA
I don’t think it’s going to work out, but we can still be friends.

SHAWN
Bitch.

ANNA
Let me know when you are ready.

EXT. STREET / ALLEYWAY – NIGHT (29) N4

Tuck skateboards along the sidewalk carrying a blue cooler. Tuck enters the alleyway and slides past the backdoor entrances. SHAWN jumps out of the dark shadows of an alcove and grabs hold of the cooler. Tuck wrestles over the cooler before being thrown to the ground and kicked by Shawn. Shawn goes face to face with Tuck.

SHAWN
Tell him thanks.

Shawn draws back kicks Tuck, grabs his skateboard and tosses it aside. Shawn escapes with the cooler into the darkness of the alley.

Tuck slowly collects himself.

EXT. CAFÉ – NIGHT (30) N4

Detective Tzume approaches the corner café and takes notice of all the shopping carts parked outside as he makes his way inside.

INT. CAFÉ – NIGHT (31) N4

Detective Tzume enters a beehive of activity amongst the homeless and stands in line behind a homeless person. He glances around the room where a pairs of eyes meet his each glance. Detective stares up at the menu to avoid eye contact.

The chef packages up an order to go in a brown bag. The chef slides a brown paper bag over the counter.

CHEF
(calls out order)
Sprouts. No salt. On brown. Ready for pickup.

Detective watches a homeless guy approach the counter for pickup. The homeless guy reciprocates with a friendly smile and nod to the chef, then quickly catches the Detective’s stare.

Detective Tzume rubs his hands together, anxious for a good greasy meal as the homeless guy ahead of him grabs his food.

DETECTIVE TZUME
I’ll have a cheeseburger, fries and //

CHEF
Sorry, can’t serve you.

Detective Tzume stands in shock.

CHEF
Midnight to 2am, I close the café for the homeless. Only time they get to eat in peace without your type staring down.

CHEF
Unless you are friends with one of these fine outstanding people, I can’t serve you.

Detective Tzume starts to turn away when Sir William’s hand lands on his shoulder.

SIR WILLIAM
I’ll have the same Arnie. He’s good to stay, won’t cause problems.

Sir William quickly glances at the detective and winks.

Chef ARNIE looks at the detective.

CHEF ARNIE
Cheeseburger and fries, right? I’ll bring it out to you guys.

Sir William leads him to a table. Detective Tzume sits watching the amazing number of homeless people come and go. The outside of the café looks like a store parking lot for homeless shopping carts. The café door suddenly CLANGS, Tuck runs in and approaches the homeless guy with the special order at the counter bar of the old 50’s diner.

The detective observes Tuck wave away in sign language. Sir William excuses himself from the Detective’s table to tend to Tuck. Tuck explains in greater detail to the homeless guy (homeless Professor) and Sir William what’s going on.

The detective carefully watches the HAND movements of Tuck. Tuck glances over but doesn’t pay further attention assuming the Detective is just another patron staring away at a homeless person.

Detective Tzume watches as Tuck, Sir William and the homeless professor hastily exit.

EXT. ALLEY – PROF’S HIDDEN LAB - NIGHT (32) N4

Sir William and Tuck push the cart down a dark abandoned alley. The shopping cart stops by a manhole cover. Sir William grabs a tool from the cart and lifts the steel cover. Tuck and Sir William disappear inside. Vanish from the alleyway.

INT. PROF’S HIDDEN LAB - NIGHT (33) N4

Detective Tzume watches the silhouettes of homeless people scurry about the alley. He opens up the manhole cover and disappears.

INT. PROF’S HIDDEN LAB TUNNEL - NIGHT (34) N4

Deserted except for Detective Tzume moving along it, pipes emit steam above him. The professor’s flashlight flickers off and on. He gently taps it against the wall as it stays on. Follows the tunnel into a remote makeshift operating room.

INT. PROF’S HIDDEN LAB - OP ROOM – NIGHT (35) N4

The FLASHLIGHT BEAM pierces through the darkened room landing on walls of plastic. Detective moves across and pulls back the plastic curtain revealing a metal operating table with leather restraints. The detective slides his hand over the cold hard steel contraption, something taken out of a horror movie or used in a middle-aged torture chamber.

Operating instruments sit like an open museum display on the trolley cart next to the table. The detective picks up individual instruments sending chills down the spine of what they are possibly used for in the wrong hands.

A wave of the flashlight reveals stainless steel counters and lots of clear plastic folded and stacked neatly on the counters for later use.

The detective can’t resist and fiddles with the operating table. The leaf drops down and a spine tingling echo of grating steel reverberates through the tunnel. The flashlight flickers OFF.

The room dark and still. His eyes dart and strain to see.

A distant sound of a door SHUTS and the wheels of a shopping cart against the cement floor of the tunnel echo. The silhouette of detective Tzume hastily scrambles for safety.

A beam of light flashes at the end of the tunnel.

SOUND of shopping cart wheels steadily grows near. A homeless guy pushes a cart through the tunnel. Flashlight secured to the cart by duct tape. A blue cooler inside the cart. Another homeless person accompanies him.

Detective Tzume watches through brick holes in the cement wall. Dark shadowy figures prepare the area. A bright surgical light is turned on highlighting every facet of the makeshift torture chamber. The table is adjusted. A partial close up of the detective’s face peering through the small brick holes in the wall.

The detective’s eyes dart to a group of homeless wheeling in a bed with a young girl passed out followed by Tuck with skateboard. Tuck’s FACE stares around the room. He senses the watchful eye of the hidden Detective upon him.

The homeless lift and transfer her onto the steel operating table.

INT. POLICE STATION – JONE’S OFFICE – DAY (36) D5

Detective Tzume adjusts himself in an uncomfortable chair.

DETECTIVE TZUME
Why, I see you have another accommodation

DETECTIVE JONES
Yep
(turns to award on wall)

DETECTIVE TZUME
Good for you.

DETECTIVE JONES
What can I say.

DETECTIVE TZUME
Where’s the new guy?

DETECTIVE JONES
Girl. She ah, she should be here in a minute.

A knock at the door and a beautiful young brunette enters the office. Det. Jones automatically slips his wedding ring off.

DETECTIVE JONES
Detective Tzume, Ms Smith.

AMANDA
Please to meet you

DETECTIVE TZUME
Pleased to meet you

DETECTIVE JONES
(stares through her)
She’s one of our undercover ops placed in as a new medical student going in under the fake name of Amanda Singleton.

Detective nods.

DETECTIVE JONES
So what do we, we have on Morteyz?

DETECTIVE TZUME
Mother is in an old age home. I’ll be driving out there tomorrow to pay her a visit. See what I can find.

Detective Jones stares at the Tzume.

DETECTIVE JONES
By the way, how is Tina?

DETECTIVE TZUME
Rose (pause) is in hospital. She’s recovering. Should be out soon.

DETECTIVE JONES
Great. Great.

Detective Jones quickly turns the conversation to Amanda.

DETECTIVE JONES
Anything?

AMANDA
Ah, yes, actually we already have a few stories with Mr. Tzume’s subject. I’ll take the students any day. Good luck with Professor Morteyz.

INT. KYLE’S APT – KITCHEN - NIGHT (37) N5

Anna faces off with Kyle, like a child who continuously pleads with her father to stop drinking. Kyle pays the usual ignorant undivided attention to satisfy her outbursts.

ANNA
Look at me. You said last time it was your last! Why can’t you see it? Every mark you change a little more, where does it stop? You want to become like Shawn?

INT. KYLE’S APT – LIVING ROOM - NIGHT (38) N5

Tyra sits on the living room floor sorting the blood cards into piles. She quietly mimics Anna, rolling her eyes of hearing the repeated rant.

INT. KYLE’S APT – KITCHEN - NIGHT (39) N5

Kyle stares down at the floor as Anna glares at him like a mother to an ill behaved child. Kyle looks up at Anna.

KYLE
One last time, promise. We need the money. You know we do.

Anna knows there is a bit a truth to the words. She lets up on the glare and lets out an exasperated breath. Kyle reinforces his plea to her.

KYLE
I’ll stop after this, promise.

ANNA
I’ll tell the professor, I swear.

KYLE
One last time, for us.
ANNA
You’re like a drunk with a promise. I don’t know why I keep believing you.

ANNA
It’s not for us. We can find the money some other way. I swear you are becoming more like Shawn than the professor every day.

Anna’s last cutting words hit Kyle but he withholds any rebuttal and instead comforts her with a hug and throws his arm around her shoulder, and leads her into the living room.

INT. KYLE’S APT – LIVING ROOM - NIGHT (40) N5

They sit in a circle around Tyra. Tyra looks at Anna defensively huddled against the wall a few feet away.

TYRA
I should just record you. It would be easier to play it back next time without you around.

Anna lunges forward to complete the circle.

ANNA
If all the marks were like you I wouldn’t have a problem with Kyle.

KYLE
Girls. Please. What have we got?

Three small piles of cards sit in front of Tyra.

TYRA
We have a type AB.

Tyra passes the blood donor card to Kyle.

KYLE
Rare find in our university. Convenient. Stacey.
Blonde, green eyes, 5'8", 104 lbs. Can't wait.

TYRA
Down boy. Don't get too attached to your patients. Rule number one. Rule number two, remember I don’t like to share.

Dies to a silence. An uncomfortable feeling is in the air.
Kyle looks at Anna. Anna enjoys the touch of jealous rebuttal from Tyra. Kyle cell RINGS. He flips the cell open.

KYLE
Yeah. Hi Amanda.

Kyle stands and walks into a separate room. His voice mumbled through the wall. Tyra and Anna sort through the cards. Kyle returns.

TYRA
Who’s Amanda?

KYLE
A new girl to the university. Prof. Morteyz instructed to help her.

Kyle glances at Anna as if not to say anything. Anna smiles and can’t help but play off of Tyra’s jealous streak.

ANNA
You would like her Tyra. She has a nice pair of lungs on her.

Tyra immediately stares at Kyle for a response.

TYRA
Why didn’t you mention her to me?

KYLE
It’s no big deal.

Kyle stands and exits to another room to avoid the line of fire. Tyra immediately follows. Anna sits with the sweetest smile emerging on her face.

INT. HOSPITAL – OLD AGE HOME - DAY (41) D6

An elderly woman sits in a rocking chair, nicely dressed, hair done up, a ribbon in it, stares out the window, gently rocking away.

MRS. MORTEYZ
Raymond stopped coming after Lily disappeared.

DET. TZUME
Disappeared?

MRS. MORTEYZ
The angels came and took Lily away. It devastated Raymond.

MRS. MORTEYZ
Raymond would bring Lily to see me twice a week. She was so beautiful. But one day we were playing and she fell to the ground, passed out. At first we thought she was joking, but it was her heart.

MRS. MORTEYZ
When they couldn’t find a heart in time for Lily, he took it hard. He blamed the system. He didn’t think it was fair, Raymond saved so many lives and couldn’t save Lily.

Becoming disoriented, the rocking stops. Everything still.

MRS. MORTEYZ
Roger stopped coming after Lily died.

Detective Tzume visibly moved by the new facts, she stares lost in thought at the clipboard in his hands.

MRS. MORTEYZ
Roger and Lily should be here any time. He comes every week with Lily. Right from the day Lily was a baby, Roger brings her to see me.

MRS. MORTEYZ
I can’t wait till you meet my grand daughter. So beautiful and smart. Long beautiful hair. I braid her hair every time she comes over.

Detective Tzume exchanges a glance

MRS. MORTEYZ
The older you get, the more they forget about you till they stop coming. Roger doesn’t come anymore.

MRS. MORTEYZ stares out the slightly opened hospital window. A bouquet of lilies adds color to the plain white surroundings.

DETECTIVE TZUME
Those are beautiful flowers.

MRS. MORTEYZ
Yes, a young man keeps bringing me flowers every month. A really nice young man. My son never comes to visit me anymore. (pause).
Who are you?

Nurses pull a wheelchair next to the rocker and transfer her. Male nurse with the name tag Roger.

MALE NURSE - ROGER
Time for your pills Ms. Morteyz.

The male nurse wheels Mrs. Morteyz away. Detective looks at the female nurse.
FEMALE NURSE
Lily died 5 years ago. Mrs. Morteyz’s Alzheimer’s took a drastic turn for the worse. Professor Morteyz took it hard.

DETECTIVE TZUME
Five years he hasn’t shown up?

FEMALE NURSE
He sends her lilies once every month on the day that Lily past. The young man that delivers flowers is her son. She can’t remember or recognize her own son now.

DETECTIVE TZUME
She mentioned a Roger.

FEMALE NURSE
Roger is the other male nurse on staff who looks after Ms. Morteyz.

The detective reacts to the newfound facts which prove useless.

INT. ALLEY – NIGHT (42) N6

Kyle leans against a brick wall. Kyle focuses on a man in a dark overcoat, crossing the street, carrying a brown leather case. He stops in front of Kyle.

BUYER
You have a match?

An unlit cigarette hangs from his mouth. Kyle pulls out a lighter and lights the man's cigarette.

BUYER
$50,000 now. $200,000 after the operation.

The man passes Kyle the leather case.

BUYER
Contact us with the time and place.

Kyle nods.

INT. RITZY CAFÉ – NIGHT (43) N6

Kyle and Amanda sit at a table sipping wine in a relaxed atmosphere. Kyle’s eyes wander and fix on the girl passing by the window. Amanda chuckles.

AMANDA
What’s your type?

Kyle tries to regain focus, realizing he was caught staring.

KYLE
Sorry, blood type?

AMANDA
No. She your type.

Kyle relaxes comforted Amanda is cool with his wandering eye, compared to the jealous rage he usually encumbers with Tyra.

KYLE
I’m not sure I have a type.

Amanda flirtatiously flips her hair back behind her ear and straights up, sips her wine, flirting to catch Kyle’s attention.

AMANDA
Attraction can be a powerful thing.

Kyle laughs.

KYLE
Wow. You’re good. I mean you’re good.

AMANDA
We better get focused. Ask me questions so I am ready for him.

KYLE
Okay, Sickle Cell Anemia, how did you come up with that?

AMANDA
A blood disorder prevalent in African Americans, Hispanics, passed on genetically. An inherited disease caused by genetic mutation.
(pause)
I was studying malaria one semester and found SCA resistant to malaria and became interested in SCA.

Kyle sits back and stares at her. Amanda stops mid speech realizing she has his full attention now.

AMANDA
What? Is something wrong?

KYLE
You seem like the type of girl that always gets what she wants?

An incorrigible smile crosses Amanda’s lips.

AMANDA
Only when I want it. Back to it or we’ll be here all night.

Amanda’s voice fluctuates to indicate it could be somewhere else. Her attention distracted by an approaching Tyra.

EXT. CAFÉ – NIGHT (44) N6

Kyle turns to catch a glimpse of Tyra enter the room in a rage towards their table. Tyra stops abruptly, stares at Amanda.

TYRA
If you know what’s good for you honey, you’d get out of my face.

Amanda glances at Kyle. Kyle nods for her to escape the situation. Amanda slowly rises under Tyra’s glare. She glances one last time at Kyle. Kyle sheepishly addresses Tyra’s glare.

KYLE
We were just studying.

TYRA
What about us Kyle?

An enraged Tyra stands in front of an embarrassedly stricken Kyle, creating a scene amidst a crowded room in a ritzy establishment.

EXT. ALLEY – SHAWN’S HIDDEN LAB – NIGHT (45) N6

Shawn glances over his shoulder down the alley. Amanda ducks inside a doorway alcove for cover. She breathes deep, nervous, hoping Shawn didn’t catch a glimpse of her.

She works up the courage and peeks around the corner catching the door slowly closing behind Shawn.

Amanda cautiously scours the alleyway and slowly slides down the wall to the door. She gently tries the handle, but it’s locked. She pauses, thinking as a HAND lands on her shoulder.

Amanda startled by a hand grasping her shoulder turns and stares into the downtrodden face of the homeless man. She winces from the smell of alcohol lingering in the air. He tugs at her arm.

IRISH HG
I know

She leans in a little to hear him better.

AMANDA
Sorry

IRISH HG
Another way in.

She hesitates to follow, a longing stare at the door. The homeless man stops a distance down the alley, waves his arm for her to follow.

HOMELESS MAN
Come.

A girl lies face up on the stainless steel bench. Unclothed. Covered by a sheet. Shawn slides a tray of operating utensils next to the bed. Playing with various one’s in sight of her.

Shawn is FACE to FACE with the female victim strapped down to the operating table. The girl’s face fills with fright as Shawn’s possessed eyes focus on her.

SHAWN
So what do we have here?
Let’s diagnose the condition together shall we. I provided you with a service, a service you could not find anywhere else. I invoiced you for parts and labour, and you decided you didn’t want to pay me my money. Do you think I do humanitarian work? Hmmm. I should cut out your uterus and let you keep the kidney.

FEMALE VICTIM
Please don’t hurt me

Shawn leans over her body and starts to kiss her. Pauses.

SHAWN
No, this is about business.

SHAWN
I want my kidney back.

FEMALE VICTIM
(begs)
I was going to pay you.
Please believe me.

SHAWN
Oh angel, I believe you.
SHAWN
It’s just I think I’ll have more fun taking it back.

FEMALE VICTIM
(screams)
Noooooooo. Please.

Shawn puts on gloves for surgery. A shadow passes in the doorway behind Shawn, caught by the female victim.

Shawn notices the eyes of the female victim focus on something behind him.

FEMALE VICTIM
(whispers)
Save me … save me.

Shawn quickly turns. A shadow moves from the doorway. Shawn’s stare remains on the open doorway.

SHAWN
Tyra? (pause) Tyra!

INT.SHAWN’S HIDDEN LAB – CHASE - NIGHT (47) N6

Amanda slowly retreats into the darkness into a small dark room. Followed by Shawn’s silhouette slowly moving past the doorframe. Amanda’s face fills with fear, as she tries to hide in a game of cat and mouse.

Shawn hunts her within the darkness. She watches shadows against the wall pursue her. Amanda crouches and hides behind a wooden crate as Shawn slowly glides by. Amanda curls and presses up against the wall. Tyra catches a glimpse of shadow movement out of the corner of her eye and detours into the room.

Amanda peeks again. Tyra reaches around and covers her mouth with a white cloth wrapping her arms around Amanda’s neck in a sleeper hold and tightens till Amanda’s body goes limp in her arms.

TYRA
Nighty, night Princess.

Shawn places a kidney wrapped in a plastic bag into the cooler and closes the lid. A cooler lies next to the female body on the table. Shawn lifts the cooler and starts to leave.

SHAWN
We’ll dump both of them when I get back.

TYRA
I’ll look after the other one.

SHAWN
The owner probably wants this back.
(pause) (smirks)
Till I need it again.

Shawn exits room.

INT. SHAWN’S HIDDEN LAB – SMALL BRICK ROOM - NIGHT (50) N6

Tyra stares at the unconscious Amanda tied to a chair. Gagged. Tyra slowly approaches and gently slides her hand over Amanda’s FACE. Gently stroking her CHEEK till Amanda slowly comes through. Her eyes open and shoot from wall to wall.

TYRA
Hello sweet princess.

Amanda tries to move, quickly realizing her hands are fastened behind her. Amanda struggles but can’t free herself to no avail. Tyra is in total control as she faces Amanda, lifts her chin up and slides forward sitting straddled in Amanda’s lap. Tyra flashes a sadistic smile.

TYRA
What are the odds.

Amanda stares at Tyra as Tyra twirls the scalpel within view. Tyra stands up and backs off a step to slap Amanda across the face a couple times.

TYRA
Bitch.

She quickly circles and leans close to Amanda’s ear, cheek to cheek. Amanda’s face filled with fear.
TYRA
(whispers)
I’m going to cut you up so no one will want to look at you.

Tyra presses the side of the scalpel against Amanda’s beautiful face. Tyra laughs at putting such fear into Amanda.

KYLE (OS)
Looks like you found my mark!!!

Tyra turns and looks over her shoulder in surprise.

TYRA
What are you doing here?

Kyle enters the room and calmly circles Amanda tied to a chair, eyeing Tyra holding a scalpel to her.

KYLE
I don’t remember this being part of the plan Tyra.

TYRA
What happened to us? I don’t want to share you with sluts like this.

She quickly acknowledges Amanda with a glance.

KYLE
It’s either his side or mine.

TYRA
Who do you want? Her or me?

Shawn enters into the frame of the doorway. The only exit from the room.

SHAWN
Yes, Kyle, who do you want?

Kyle stare remains on Tyra.

KYLE
Let her go.

SHAWN
We can’t just let her walk off Kyle. You’re getting soft again.

Kyle acknowledges Shawn’s presence.

KYLE
She leaves with me. She won’t talk. I’ll make sure of it.

Shawn stalks Kyle. They circle Tyra and Amanda.

SHAWN
What’s in it for me Kyle?
I know what you are up to Kyle. Work with me Kyle, we could be a great team.

Kyle stares at Tyra.

KYLE
The girl comes with me.

Not breaking his stare at Tyra. Tyra stares at Amanda.

SHAWN
Give your word you’ll hook up with me on the next one and she’s yours.

Kyle stares at Tyra.

KYLE
One time.

They stop circling. Shawn nods to Tyra to back off.

TYRA
Looks like your new boyfriend saved your life for now.

Tyra steps back towards Shawn. Amanda in total fear.

SHAWN
Welcome to the other side Kyle. I’ll let you clean up my mess.

Shawn and Tyra exit. A wicked laugh fills the air as they exit. Kyle starts to unfasten the ropes bounding Amanda.

INT. LECTURE HALL – DAY (51) D7

An empty stage. FACES of students in the audience show varying degrees of interest amongst their own discussions. The theatre lights go out. DARKNESS.

A spotlight flashes on a blue cooler in the middle of the stage.

Shawn films in anticipation of what’s next.

Silence. Darkness. The SOUND of feet walk out on stage into the circle of light.

Professor Morteyz reveals himself under the spotlight of the cooler, decked out in a white lab coat.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
If any one of you just had something to eat, you may want to step out for the next few minutes.

He stands at the front of the class. Waits. Silence. No one gets up to leave. Professor Morteyz glances at Detective Tzume sitting in the front row.

Professor Morteyz opens the cooler, reaches in, ice rustles as he pulls out a kidney.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
Organs save lives.

The room is quiet. The professor catches Shawn’s stare, then stares at the kidney. Silence. Voices of the past run through his head. Shawn’s voice. His voice. Arguing over the heart Shawn killed to get him.

INT. LECTURE HALL – PROF’S VOICEOVER FLASHBACK (51) D7

SHAWN (OS)
You told me to get you a heart.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ (OS)
You killed for me.

SHAWN (OS)
For you, yes.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ (OS)
I never asked you to kill for me.
SHAWN (OS)
My hands are no different than yours.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
My hands don’t hold my blood. They are covered in the blood of another.

SHAWN
You killed with my hands.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
We are done. Please leave.

INT. LECTURE HALL – DAY (51) D7

Anna gets up, covers her mouth and exits the room. The closing of the door snaps the Professor back into the moment. Blood drips from his hands to form a puddle on the stage floor as he looks up at the class in silence.

INT. HALLWAY (OUTSIDE MORGUE) – DAY (52) D7

Professor Morteyz and Detective Tzume stroll down the hallway at a brisk pace.

DETECTIVE TZUME
Do you think it’s possible to perform a surgery like this outside the hospital walls? All the factors considered.

They reach the door. Prof. Morteyz looks at him inquisitively.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
Are babies be born outside the hospital? All factors considered.

DETECTIVE TZUME
Never would ever imagined a university would ever have their own morgue.

Professor Morteyz bursts through the double swinging doors.

INT. MORGUE – DAY – SAME (53) D7

As Professor Morteyz enters, SOBBING cuts through the dark stillness of the room. The CLICK of a light switch reveals Anna crouched up against the cement wall, clutching a teddy bear.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
What are you doing here Anna?

Anna saddened, looks up at an angered Professor Morteyz.

ANNA
I remember her from the hospital.

Anna nods towards the table hosting a covered pregnant body.

ANNA
A young pregnant mother was killed by a drunk driver. Along with her 3 year old son in the car.

ANNA
The hospital just tossed the teddy bear into the lost and found. It was supposed to be for her newborn baby. I’m returning it.

Professor Morteyz grows angrier. The professor slams his hand against the steel door of the next compartment.

An identification tag hangs off the tiny barefoot of a child. The young child covered by a sheet. The professor glances at the victim without emotion.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
A three year old killed in a motor vehicle accident.

The professor proceeds to the next compartment.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
Domestic dispute.

Points to the next door hosting a body.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
Infection.

Professor Morteyz lowers himself to Anna’s eye level. He stares into her eyes. Grabs the teddy bear from her arms and holds it in front of her.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
This teddy bear is no more alive. Anna, remember, to a doctor, the heart is a pump. The kidneys are the filters. You will have to see that.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
Separate any feelings, or you’ll never survive.

Professor Morteyz tosses the teddy bear to the side as he bolts out of the room.

Detective Tzume stares from across the room. The SOBBING turns to silence. Anna glances over at the teddy bear a distance away. Hesitating. She stands, picks up the teddy bear, and places it on the on the tummy of the dead pregnant mother.

ANNA
(whispers)
This is for your baby, mama.

She stands in a trance. Staring at the teddy bear.

DET. TZUME
You have a soul.

Anna locks eye contact with the detective.

DET. TZUME
Everyone has a soul. He just has to find his again.

DET. TZUME
Come on, how bout we get out of this place. Gives me the creeps being in here.

Det. Tzume lends a hand to Anna.

INT. HOSPITAL – ROSE’S ROOM – NIGHT (54) N7

Detective Tzume stands outside Rose’s room looking in through the window. Rose lies on the bed motionless.

The detective’s eyes well up with tears as a trail of a tear drop lines his cheek.

Anna watches the detective from the end of the hallway.

INT. POLICE STN - OFFICE – DAY (55) *** DELETED *** D8

Detective Jones sits slumped in his chair, behind the large desk. Amanda and Detective Tzume sit across.

DETECTIVE JONES
Fake donor cards and blood samples are planted to lead them to our established marks. One guy, one female.

Detective Jones slides a picture across the desk to Amanda. Amanda and Det. Tzume study the picture.

DETECTIVE JONES (OS)
Her name is Ms. Dupre. Another agent deep cover. She’ll be the one with the girlfriend.

AMANDA
As long as they buy it. I’ll miss my mark with the guy which should get a rouse out of Tyra then pick her up.

DETECTIVE JONES
Shawn definitely won’t miss Julia, the second mark moving in. These guys smell a high priced mark a mile away like blood to a shark.

AMANDA
Then meet you at the lab site I’m supposed to take her to?

DETECTIVE JONES
You sure that’s the lab?

DETECTIVE TZUME
They seem pretty territorial and have their favorite spots.

AMANDA
Old abandoned buildings. They seem to really be drawn to them. Perfect hideout for an operation like this.

DETECTIVE JONES
We’ll work with that and I’ll get people ready.

INT. BUILDING - BLOOD DONOR AREA – DAY (56) D8

Amanda and Anna sit at the table, donors fill in their donor cards. They collect the cards for later reference. Nurses stand nearby to escort donors into the makeshift cloth booths set up.

Two girls hand in hand approach the table. The blonde girl picks up a pamphlet. Sign – ‘It’s in you to give’ hangs off table.

ANNA
Would you like to donate?

The blonde girl stares directly at Amanda, leans over the table and in a seductive tone.

BLONDE GIRL
Will you do me?

ANNA
(interjects)
The nurses will be with you shortly if you are serious

The blonde girl’s stare remains on Amanda.

BLONDE GIRL
I’m serious.

Amanda’s body language gives her answer. She stares at Anna.

BLONDE GIRL
I’ll give you what you want when you give me what I want.

She draws her attention to Amanda as she embraces her partner in a hug.

BLONDE GIRL
I’m always looking for new friends.

A nurse approaches the table and looks at Anna, then at the two girls embraced.

NURSE
Who’s next?

ANNA
You donate and I’ll think about getting you what you want. You could save a life.

The blonde lets go and shrugs.

BLONDE GIRL
What have I got to lose?

Anna hands her a card. She gently places her hand on Anna’s shoulder and whispers into her ear. Smiles and follows the nurse into the back room.

Her friend stands sheepishly in front of the table. Anna leans forward showing her cleavage to the girl in front.

ANNA
Will you donate for me? You aren’t second best in my books.

The brunette smiles and takes a donator card from Anna.

ANNA
Just donate, fill out the card and give it back to me. I’ll look after it for you.

The brunette follows another nurse back to booth. Curtain closes.

AMANDA
Definitely know who wears the pants in that relationship.

Anna giggles.

AMANDA
Nice work Anna. Didn’t know you had it in you.

ANNA
Anything for a worthy cause! Never thought I’d ever use those moves on a woman.

Anna laughs.

INT. SHAWN’S APARTMENT – NIGHT (57) N8

The group sit on the floor around the crate table. Kyle and Amanda stare at each other. Kyle looks at Shawn.

KYLE
She’s in.

SHAWN
God, that’s what I love about you Kyle, you never go back on your word. Something to admire.

TYRA
We’ll make you part of us now.
All you need to do is pick up a mark and bring her to us.

AMANDA
Why can’t you do it?

TYRA
I would honey, but we got you for the dirty work now.

AMANDA
Or maybe it’s because neither of you can hit your mark anymore.

TYRA
Keep it up bitch and I’m sure I can find someone that considers tongue a delicacy.

KYLE
One time. And we are square.

SHAWN
You always remember your first don’t you Kyle?

KYLE
I remember all of them as my first.

SHAWN
After a while, the feeling goes away. And you become addicted. You lie in bed at night, wanting to kill.

INT - LECTURE HALL – DAY (58) D9
The stage is empty. The theatre fills with students. The murmur grows as the students get seated.

The lights dim. Quiet ensues.

A distinguished looking Professor Morteyz with wire rimmed glasses steps on stage. He stands silent. Everyone watches as an awkward silence falls on the crowd.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
If you could save a life would you right now? Please raise your hands.

Everyone in the class raises their hands.

Professor Morteyz controls the stage. He paces the stage like a caged tiger, briefly locking eyes with every audience member, holding them in a trance just by the tone of his voice.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
Are you a legally declared organ donor? Please raise your hands.

Only about 1/5 the class raises their hands. He paces some more and stops in front of Amanda. He leans in towards her.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
Do you believe in fate? The hand of God? Organ transplants?

The room is quiet. Amanda is silent. Slowly nodding her head. Professor Morteyz returns to pacing the stage, momentarily stopping for his next statement.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
Should the deceased have to give consent?

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
Should a drunk driver whose rash actions cost a young mother her kidneys, be legally compelled to give her one?

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
What if both drivers were drunk?

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
What if he hit a murderer?

The room is quiet and attentive.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
Take the life of one man to save two men? Three men?

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
Organ transplants used to save a skilled physician? or a convict?

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
Do we have a legal, religious, ethical right to prolong life?

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
Prevent the suffering of a patient?

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
Base it on age, sex or race? Or disease?

Professor Morteyz stops in front of the Detective.

DETECTIVE TZUME
No one has the right to make the decision of God.

Professor Morteyz stops in hesitation. Thinking. A finger lifts in the air in exclamation upon the recital of his next words.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
I have never seen the slightest scientific proof of the religious theories of heaven and hell, of future life for individuals, or of a personal God. Thomas Edison.

FACES amongst the students watch the professor.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
Is God going to save your daughter?
Do you accept God’s will if he takes your daughter?

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
Reality determines the path we follow. WE have the power to make that decision.

Professor Morteyz commands the stage, roaming corner to corner.

Detective Tzume sits and listens intently from the front row.

Professor Morteyz’s voice booms clear as Detective Tzume’s EYES follow the roaming lecturer.

The professor lifts his hands high in the air, slowly lowering them in front of himself, staring at them in a deep trance.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
These are the tools of a surgeon.
These are the tools of God.

Professor Morteyz keeps staring at his hands.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
Without these, you are nothing.

The professor locks stares with Detective Tzume.

INT. CLUB - BAR – NIGHT (59) N9

Amanda is sexily dressed in a little black dress. All eyes watch her enter and walk across the room to the table of Tyra and Shawn.

SHAWN
We are going after a different mark. Go up to the bar and play him till a couple girls enter the bar. The blonde is worth over a million for her parts. Don’t blow it or I’ll have your body parts.

Amanda saunters up to the bar.

Tyra’s envious glare follows Amanda’s movements to the bar.

Amanda leans up on the corner of the bar beside a good looking drunk balancing himself on the high stool one seat over.

Amanda trades glances at the bartender.

AMANDA
Tequila shot please.

Amanda’s flirtatious glance shifts left to catch the stare of the good looking drunk guy. His words thickened by the alcohol.

DRUNK MALE
Make that two shots.

The drunk male turns his attention towards her as the bartender slides the shots across the bar. The male mark in a drunken stupor.

DRUNK MALE
Was your father a thief?

AMANDA
(laughs)
Knock, Knock, … no why?

DRUNK MALE
Because he stole the stars and put them in your eyes.

AMANDA
You know why men are like ceramic tiles?

DRUNK MALE
Surprise me.

AMANDA
You lay them well once then you can walk all over them.

DRUNK MALE
Okay, that’s not funny.

AMANDA
I thought so.

Amanda quickly glances around the room while laughing to catch Tyra’s glare behind her. Offering her hand to the drunk male.

AMANDA
Tyra.

DRUNK MALE
Nice to meet you Tyra.

The male mark watches the ass of a blonde and her girlfriend as the weave through to the bar. The blonde has her hand tucked into the jeans pocket of the brunette. Slightly grasping her butt.

DRUNK MALE
Phhhfff … there’s a waste.

The blonde walks by Shawn’s table gaining his attention, much to Tyra’s dislike. Amanda glances back at Shawn as his eyes shift wildly from one end of the bar to the other. Shawn nods to Amanda.

The blonde positions at the far end of the bar. One hand around her female brunette partner.

Tyra’s jealousy comes through.

TYRA
You don’t need her to do this.

Shawn grabs her arm to restrain her from leaving but Tyra brushes him off and stammers up to the bar. Shawn sits enraged. Amanda and the blonde lock glances across the bar and consider each other for a long moment before Tyra makes her approach and interrupts. Tyra leans on the bar next to the blonde.

TYRA
Care to dance?

The blonde shakes her head she’s not interested. The brunette annoyed by the come on, tugs on the blonde’s hand and tows her out onto the dance floor.

Tyra catches Shawn’s glare as she retreats to the table. Tyra passes the end of the bar where Amanda sits. Amanda coyly smiles at Tyra’s missed attempt on her way by.

Shawn watches the two female ‘partners’ out on the dance floor. Shawn observes his female target ‘mark’ move with ease.

Amanda drags the drunk male onto the dance floor attracting the attention of the female couple. The blonde and the brunette slowly edge their way over to check Amanda out.

The male mark throws his hands up in the air in frustration to wash his hands of the situation when Amanda decides to shift her attention at the right moment to the female mark.

The three girls form their own little dance group, ignorant of his presence.

The blonde leans in and whispers into her ear.

INT. BAR - SHAWN’S TABLE (60)

Shawn’s reaction shows he’s thoroughly impressed with Amanda.

SHAWN
Wow. This girl is good. I see why Kyle chose her.

TYRA
She’s not that good.

Tyra’s bitterness grows towards Amanda.

SHAWN
Tell her there’s a change of plans and to bring her to the other site.

A smile crosses Tyra’s face.

TYRA
Gladly.

EXT. ALLEY – SHAWN’S HIDDEN LAB – NIGHT (61) N9

Irish homeless guy sleeps curled up against a dumpster next to the steel door. Shawn kicks to wake him.

SHAWN
Wake up.

Irish homeless guy ignores him only to be kicked again. Shawn kneels down close beside him and whispers.

SHAWN
Here’s $100. If you see anyone besides two girls enter, make all the noise you can.

Shawn holds the $100 bill in front of him. Shawn pulls the bill away as the Irish homeless guy anxiously reaches for it.

SHAWN
Ahhhh ahhhh ahhh

Shawn tears the bill in half and gives the homeless guy half.

SHAWN
Half now, half later.

EXT. ALLEY – SHAWN’S HIDDEN LAB – NIGHT LATER (62) N9

Female giggles echo off the brick walls of the alleyway as Amanda escorts her blonde friend to the side entrance.

A homeless guys surround the blonde girl’s on either side. Playing on the fear of the blonde girl, homeless guy Mark is face to face as he suddenly lifts his hands up by his face.

AMANDA
Don’t worry, they’re harmless. Guardian angels of the streets and alleys at night. They sense your fear. Playing with you.

INT. SHAWN’S HIDDEN LAB – ROOM - NIGHT (63) N9

Amanda leads the blonde girl into an empty room with only a mattress and a large mirror. A video camera on a tripod sits in the corner beside a small table with two glasses and a bottle of wine.

The blonde girl sits on the corner of the bed as Amanda lights a lot of candles and then opens the bottle of wine.

BLONDE GIRL
Are you going to tape us?
Amanda hands her a glass of wine. The blonde girl sips her wine as she watches Amanda adjust the camera on the tripod.

The blonde girl comes in and out of focus on the camera’s viewfinder. The blonde girl sips her wine, being playful in front of the camera. She slips off her top, staring into the camera.

BLONDE GIRL
How do you want me?

She kneels on the mattress being playful to the camera. Amanda handholds the camera, closing in on the blonde girl at different angles, circling the bed.

AMANDA
I want you.
(pause)
Just like that.

Amanda places the camera on the tripod as Tyra enters the room behind her. The blonde girl passed out on the mattress.

Tyra looks down on the helpless blonde lying face down.

TYRA
Hope Kyle has more excitement than that for you.

Tyra grabs the limp body and tries to drag the blonde’s body with difficulty.

TYRA
Come on, help me get her up.

AMANDA
I did my job already.

TYRA
You are far from finished.

Tyra laughs. A concerned look crosses over Amanda’s face as she grabs the other side of the blonde, and hoists her up. Amanda and Tyra drag her through the door into the op room.

INT. SHAWN’S HIDDEN LAB - OPERATING ROOM – NIGHT (64) N9

Amanda and Tyra lie the body on the operating table as Shawn circles with the camera in hand.

AMANDA
Do you mind? Quit pointing that thing at me.

SHAWN
A great doctor always documents.

Shawn points the camera at her.

SHAWN
Tonight, you become one of us.

A look of concern crosses her face.

SHAWN
You will be doing the surgery.

AMANDA
I can’t. I …

SHAWN
Consider it our insurance policy. Now which is your best side?

Tyra giggles at Shawn’s last comment of a best side while she prepares the instruments on the tray. Tyra puts on her face mask and gloves. She throws Amanda gloves.

AMANDA
Don’t I get a mask?

SHAWN
And cover up that pretty face?

Tyra looks at Amanda.

TYRA
You aren’t scared are you?
Not the first time you stole a guy’s heart is it?

INT. HOSPITAL – ROSE’S ROOM – NIGHT (65) N9

Rose lies in bed, eyes closed. Anna takes a blood sample.

The murmur of voices grows loud enough to eavesdrop on the Detective and the young female doctor outside the room.

YOUNG FEMALE DOCTOR (OS)
She’s slowly dying Detective and there’s nothing I can do to stop that. Her body is in resistance.

DETECTIVE TZUME(OS)
I want to give my kidney.

YOUNG FEMALE DOCTOR
You want to be hooked up to a dialysis machine the rest of your life.

DETECTIVE TZUME(OS)
I’m not planning on a dialysis doctor.

YOUNG FEMALE DOCTOR(OS)
Euthanasia, is illegal. You know I can’t do that. Your kidney didn’t work for your wife, chances are it won’t work for your daughter. The risk is too great even if I could.

DETECTIVE TZUME (OS)
Damn it! What gives anyone the right to decide that?

YOUNG FEMALE DOCTOR(OS)
The law detective and the Oath I’ve sworn to.

DETECTIVE TZUME (OS)
I’m begging you doctor.

Rose lets out a long drawn out groan of pain and groggily opens her eyes. Rose looks up at Anna and manages a smile.

ANNA
Hi Rose.

Rose looks over as the detective enters.

DETECTIVE TZUME
Hey baby.

The detective takes Rose’s hand and holds tight.

ROSE
Papa, make the pain go away.

DETECTIVE TZUME
I will baby, I will.

The echo of the doctors footsteps exiting resonate throughout the hallway. Rose crumples in pain and drifts off.

The detective looks at Anna, and back at Rose. Rose’s hand goes limp in her father’s hands. A feeling of helplessness hits the detective. Tears come to the Detective’s eyes.

Anna stares at an emotionally distraught Detective.

Anna walks around the bed to comfort the detective with a hug.

ANNA
She needs you to be strong.

The detective straightens up and looks at Anna.

ANNA
I might be able to help.

Anna releases her embrace and stares into the eyes of Detective Tzume.

ANNA
We might be able to save her.

He looks at her with great interest. Anna stiffens up straight in preparation of her toughest speech.

INT. UNIVERSITY LAB – BACK LAB (66) D13

Shawn approaches and stops in the doorway, watching in silence as Professor Morteyz works away at the back counter.

SHAWN
It’s been too long Doctor, or should I say Professor. Took me a couple years to find you.

SHAWN
Saving all these lives in the underground clear your conscience?

Silence. Shawn slams his hands on the counter in front of Professor Morteyz and pulls out a donor card.

SHAWN
You see this. This is the donor card of the little girl who's heart I stole for your daughter. I've carried it with me since the

PROF. MORTEYZ
You don’t have an appointment Shawn, there’s nothing here for you.

SHAWN
Justice. Justice is here for me.
We both experienced death that day. You know what, I’m the one that lives with the burden and horror you caused.

Professor Morteyz quickly pivots around goes face to face with Shawn.

SHAWN
You didn’t try to save her.

PROF. MORTEYZ
I didn’t tell you to kill for me. I never asked you to kill for me.

SHAWN
But you, you must be made accountable for your actions doctor. You can’t run this time, not without saving the detective first.

SHAWN
You’ll finally risk getting blood on your hands to clear your conscience.

SHAWN
You think saving the life of the Detective’s daughter will clear your conscience Doctor?
You think that?

Professor Morteyz pays close attention to the words.

SHAWN
The only person you are trying to save right now, is yourself, and you know what doc, I won’t let that happen.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
I’m sorry, you’ll have to make an appointment. I have work to do.

INT. PROF. MORTEYZ’S OFFICE – DAY (67) D10

Professor Morteyz drifts off in his chair. Eyes deep in thought disappear under heavy eyelids.

FLASHBACK – HOSPITAL ROOM – LILY ON BED (68) D10

A little girl about 5 years old lies in a hospital bed staring up at Professor Morteyz.

DAUGHTER LILY
Will I ever see the snow in winter papa?

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
Yes, you will. I promise.

FLASHBACK - INT. PROF. MORTEYZ’S OFFICE – DAY (69) D10

We follow behind Professor Morteyz as his frame blocks the object he is carrying. He walks up to the window and places something down on the table in front of the window. He steps to the side to reveal a small coffin on the table. We look through the window to see snow falling past the grand window.

INT. PROF. MORTEYZ’S OFFICE – DAY (70) D10

GIGGLING sounds disturb his restful state of mind as he stands and looks out the grand window of his office.

FLASHBACK - EXT. PLAYGROUND – DAY (70b) D10

Professor’s POV from window as a young girl about 2 years old swings in the arms of her mother, dancing amidst the circle of lilies surrounding them on the lawn below. A CLOSE of the little girl laughing and giggling. The little girl walks to the edge of the circle, picks up a lily. The mother holds Lily in her arms while they wave up at the Professor.

INT. PROF. MORTEYZ’S OFFICE – DAY (71) D10

The RUSTLING of a brown paper bag detracts the Professor’s attention of looking out the window to his desk behind him.
A brown paper lunch bag sits on the desk.

DETECTIVE TZUME
Sprouts, no salt, on brown. (pause)
Took me a while to figure you out Professor.

Detective Tzume admires the single lily in a vase.

DETECTIVE TZUME
Your daughter Lily.

DETECTIVE TZUME
My daughter’s name is Rose. I’m finally starting to see the reasoning behind what you did Professor.

The professor’s stare changes as he watches the detective slowly touch the lily. Professor Morteyz dashes at the Detective.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
Take your damn hands off!

Both men sit. Professor Morteyz places the lily in it’s spot.

DETECTIVE TZUME
Strange how time and circumstance quickly change one’s perspective.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
The answer is no.

DETECTIVE TZUME
Professor, what happened to Lily was out of your control. You did your best to save her.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
My best wasn’t good enough Detective. I know what you want, but I couldn’t save my own child.

DETECTIVE TZUME
The guilt, the pain. Is that why you perform all these underground operations?

DETECTIVE TZUME
What you want, what you want is to save children’s lives. To take the pain away.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
If you think this is going to talk me into saving your daughter, you better start again.

DETECTIVE TZUME
You, are the only one that understands my circumstance.
Don’t let me suffer the same pain that you suffered through for Lily.

DETECTIVE TZUME
Help me save Rose.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
You don’t know the road I’ve been down. You don’t want to go down there.

DETECTIVE TZUME
I’m ready.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
No. You just think you are.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
You’re a police officer, you want to break the law?
(pause)
You’re a man of faith, you want to go against God?

DETECTIVE TZUME
I’ve been thinking about what you said. Maybe there’s a God, in life, you only get one go. I want to make my last moments count.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
I’ll be the man that kills you.

DETECTIVE TZUME
Don’t think of it as guilt. Think of it as sacrifice.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
Do you think you’re being brave?
You think you’re helping somebody?
What about all the people you won’t be able to help because you’ll be dead. What about that means to your entire life. You’ve been a police officer for what? 30 years?

DETECTIVE TZUME
You really think that after my daughter dies, the last piece of my life that I have, do you really think I’m going to be standing by you?

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
This isn’t about what you’re willing to do. This is about what you’re willing to become.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
Are you ready to go against everything you’ve become, everything you’ve ever believed in?

DETECTIVE TZUME
Well Professor, I really don’t have to worry about that, will I?
I worry about one thing, the life I’m about to save.

Professor Morteyz reaches out his hand across the desk.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
Give me your hand.

Detective Tzume complies with a firm shake. Eye to eye.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
You just shook the hand of the man that killed you. Be ready tomorrow.

INT. HOMELESS CAFÉ – NIGHT (72) N11

Detective Tzume sits alone at a table. A half empty coffee cup sits in front of him. His attention is drawn to the SLURPING of the Irish homeless guy in the next booth sipping his soup. He looks up to catch the detective’s stare and tosses the bowl of soup at the Detective.

HG – IRISH
What are you staring at?

They stare at each other until the waitress drops another bowl in front of the homeless guy. He focuses his attention back to the sipping the soup.

WAITRESS
Coffee okay Ray?

Detective Tzume smiles selfishly as he wipes the remains of soup from the front of his shirt with a napkin.

DETECTIVE TZUME
Perfectly brewed.
Perfectly brewed.

The chef chuckles. The eye contact drops as a knock on the window startles the detective. Tuck smiles. His homeless friend points to the bottle in the bag then to the detective. Detective Tzume smiles appreciatively and points to his coffee cup on the table. He acknowledges with a wave to join him inside.

Tuck nods. His homeless friend pats Tuck on the shoulder, takes a swig and waves goodbye and carries on pushing his cart.

Tuck enters the café with skateboard in hand and sits down at the detective’s empty table. He sign languages Tuck. Tuck looks to the next booth, then suspiciously looks out the window before he sign languages the detective his orders.

Detective Tzume gets up to go to the washroom. The next booth is empty. The detective looks around for the Irish homeless guy sitting there seconds earlier.

INT. CAFÉ – NIGHT (75) N11

Tuck watches as a white homeless ‘detective’ exits the washroom hobbles with a bit of a limp because of his mismatched shoes.

One shoe is a dress shoe while the other is a work boot. Under a homeless disguise of a white homeless man, beard, and dirty overcoat, the homeless ‘detective’ sets to exit.

Shawn bumps into the homeless ‘detective’ in passing. The homeless ‘detective’ turns his head towards Shawn. The prosthetic of the mask lifts up on the opposite side of his neck exposing a brown patch of skin. Evident in the mirror beside him, to Shawn’s point of view.

The ‘white’ homeless detective lifts his right hand to cover the prosthetic of the mask in time, pretending to itch, head lowered as Shawn looks into the mirror, only to see his hand in the way.

RECEPTIONIST
You finally figure out the winning lottery numbers.

YOUNG FEMALE DOCTOR
Better. Tonight we save a life. A kidney is on it’s way for Rose. Better than the odds of winning the lottery. It’ll be here in two hours.

Panic spreads across Amanda’s face.

YOUNG FEMALE DOCTOR
I have to check on Rose, share the news.

The young female doctor disappears around the corner. Amanda sits and stares at the clock. 9:10pm.

The young female doctor returns in a state of panic. Amanda approaches the counter.

The unidentified figure turns away from the counter and walks towards the Detective, and stops a couple feet way. Professor Morteyz stares into the eyes of the detective.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
Welcome to my humble abode.
Are you ready to die Detective?

DETECTIVE TZUME
I can’t believe how ignorant society has become.

Tuck and homeless guy Mark step through the plastic curtains.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
Homeless people are invisible to society. My whole network is invisible. Ignorance is bliss.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
You are a special person Detective. The reason I stand before you and show the willingness to save again with my own hands.

Professor Morteyz holds up a tube filled with a substance.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
Five years of research detective. And we get to see if it was all worth it tonight.

Shawn places the bottle on the ground beside him.

SHAWN
No hard feelings. I’m sorry.

Shawn stands up and walks off. A glimpse of Shawn’s face as he walks away reveals a sadistic smirk.

DETECTIVE TZUME
It was a pleasure to make your acquaintance Tuck.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
Are you ready Mr. Tzume?
Any final words?

DETECTIVE TZUME
Just tell my daughter I love her.
Thank you Anna.

Anna passes the syringe to Professor Morteyz. Professor Morteyz holds up a syringe, inserts needle into tube and withdraws the fluid for the injection. Prof Morteyz injects the fluid into the detective’s arm. Detective Tzume fades into a deep sleep.

KYLE
Open it up.

COURIER (OS)
It’s locked.

Kyle lets go of the button and dashes out of the apartment.
Kyle returns with the blue cooler. He places it on the kitchen counter and turns it around to the side with the key. He turns it upside down, nothing is taped to the underside.

KYLE
(whispers to himself)
No key.

The cell phone on the kitchen table rings. Kyle stares at the phone. He picks it up and looks at the display. He answers on the sixth ring.

KYLE
Yeah.

SHAWN (VO)

Professor Morteyz startled at Kyle’s presence.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
What are you doing here?

KYLE
What’s going on? Shawn called me. He didn’t mention anything about the detective.

Professor Morteyz stares at the blue ice cooler in Kyle’s hand. Kyle glances at the cooler on the counter.

KYLE
Professor? What’s going on?

The sound of cart wheels on cement echo throughout the corridor into the lab to distract everyone.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
You are about to find out.

They all watch the door in silence.

Shawn enters pushing a cart loaded with a body wrapped in a blanket. Shawn steps back to the middle of the room, draws his gun and aims it at Professor Morteyz.

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
What the hell are you doing?
How dare you interrupt me.

Shawn manages a smirk of a smile.

SHAWN
Welcome to MY stage professor.
It’s my time. I don’t need to make an appointment. Please step away from the table.

SHAWN
You have something I want more than your forgiveness Professor. I want the serum.

Shawn holds aim on the Professor. Shawn steps towards Kyle, putting his arm around Kyle.

KYLE
What are you doing Shawn?
What’s this about?

SHAWN
He let us down Kyle.

SHAWN
You’re no different to him than I was. People don’t change. Do they professor?

SHAWN
Tools of the trade, I remember.

SHAWN
A whole underground network saving lives.

SHAWN
Took me a while to figure out your system Professor and what you were really up to. Transferring the organs through a homeless network, using the homeless disguise. It was your heart to save lives that cost you again Professor.

SHAWN
The serum. Why didn’t you use it to save Lily? Why?

PROFESSOR MORTEYZ
It wasn’t ready yet.

SHAWN
Bullshit. You were scared. Instead you let me go out and kill for you. And you didn’t hang around to save me either.

Low voice in Shawn.

SHAWN
There’s no serum to fix me. ME!

Shawn digs into his pocket for a key. He tosses Kyle a key to the cooler.

SHAWN
Tyra made me promise to give you something. Open up the cooler Kyle.

Kyle apprehensively unlocks the cooler and opens the lid. He looks inside. His face goes white from shock.

SHAWN
Tyra always said her heart belonged to you.

Kyle readies to lunge at Shawn. Shawn waves the gun at him.

SHAWN
Ahhhh ahhhh … not smart Kyle.

Kyle takes a brave stand and starts to laugh.

SHAWN
I knew you would doubt me Kyle.
Never doubt me. Check the cart.

Kyle stares at Shawn.

SHAWN
Check the cart! (pause) Do it!

Kyle walks over to the cart. He unravels part of the blanket and sees Tyra’s head lifelessly roll into his hands. Kyle pulls the blanket back further.

Shawn watches as Kyle has his back to him. Shawn steps in and pushes the gun into his side.

KYLE
You killed her you son of a bitch!

Kyle turns for Shawn. Shawn shoots off a round as Kyle drops to the ground.

SHAWN
Look at your protégé now Professor!
You like playing God, Professor Morteyz, (pause) let’s see you save the dead. Let’s see your serum fix him.

SHAWN
You caused this. You created me.

Shawn lifts up the video camera.

SHAWN
I’ve been recording your every move professor.

SWAT MEMBER
Come on buddy, it’s not safe for you down here. You shouldn’t be down here.

The homeless person sits up, gathers himself.

SWAT MEMBER 2
Come on, let’s get you out of here.

Swat member 1 picks him up and leads him out of the tunnel.
Swat member 2 catches a glimpse of a shiny object in the upper ledge of the tunnel wall, a small alcove for pipes. He pulls out a video camera hidden behind the pipes. He opens up and watches the footage. Glances at his partner.

SWAT MEMBER 2
He’s here in the tunnels still.

The swat member meets up with other members at the T section of the tunnel with the homeless guy in tow.

SWAT MEMBER 1
He must be around here somewhere. Found the camera while pulling out the homeless guy.

There are some good indie films out there. This is definitely one of them. There really isn’t any senseless violence in this movie, which quite honestly is a bit of a relief from most other movies touching in the area of the human organ trade. But there are a few places that it’s suspenseful and overall it makes you think about the subject matter at hand.

Unlike some other movies having to do with the human organ trade that have a futuristic setting, this particular movie is set in the present. It’s kind of scary to think how things could be happening right now beneath our noses, where it’s invisible with daily hubbub and everyday items. (I won’t look at a blue cooler the same way anymore.) Yes, this movie is playing-off the classic urban legend of the human organ trade: a victim found in a bathtub of ice with a missing kidney. But from what I’ve been reading from various sources, it does seem that this lucrative black market exists where organs are transported from poorer countries to richer ones.

But this movie is more than just about the organ trade. It’s also about a professor that definitely has some personal issues to overcome. He pretty much thinks he’s godlike and he uses his underground network to save lives and make a difference in the world—a difference that he’s trying to make-up for a lost loved one that he couldn’t save himself.

One of the professor’s adversaries is the detective. He’s also got his own personal struggles that he’s dealing with, and it was interesting to see how it played out. His predicament was definitely challenging his beliefs of right from wrong.

There are other characters that had good character development, including Shawn who is this creepy, cold-hearted person involved in the organ trade. Later on, the movie touches on how the organ trade turned him into this kind of person.

But instead of reading about it, I suggest finding some time to watch the movie itself.
