In recent years both the demand for and the complexity of UN police peacekeeping has changed dramatically. Police are present in seventeen missions with over 13 thousand officers deployed, however only 8 percent are women. Speaking at a meeting on global efforts to increase female participation in UN peacekeeping, Secretary General Ban-Ki-Moon says that by empowering women we build better societies.
