Friday saw a 11.1% increase in box office revenue over the previous Friday.
Comedy is the flavor of the day (and this weekend) for the U.S. Box Office. Top spot for Friday goes to THE PROPOSAL, the Sandra Bullock/Ryan Reynolds rom-com which earned an estimated $12.4M. This is a strong result for Bullock as her recent films have debuted to $17-20M weekends, and this film is on track for a $30M+ opening weekend.
Opening in second spot with an expected estimate of $8.5M is YEAR ONE, the Jack Black comedy which looks like a lame rip-off of the works of Monty Python and Mel Brooks. Although far from a disaster, the film is not likely to do any better than Black's previous films, and the word-of-mouth is not crash hot so expect this one to slip down quickly in the coming days and weeks.
Third spot goes to one of the biggest surprises of the year, THE HANGOVER, which dropped only 17.9% on last Friday to earn an estimated $8.4M. The film is still doing fantastic business and has been trading top spot with another big winner of the year, Disney/Pixar's UP which earned an estimated $6.1M on Friday to take out fourth spot. Both films are doing extremely well and despite some competition coming up, they should still do some decent business before they end their respective runs.
THE TAKING OF PELHAM 1 2 3 has been chopped off at the knees this Friday, dropping a mammoth 61% on last Friday to earn an estimated $3.2M. The film is largely turning in to one of Denzel Washington's average performers as opposed to great performers and will disappear quickly once some of the new blockbusters enter the marketplace in the next few weeks.
The remaining box office estimates for films on Friday are as follows: NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: BATTLE OF THE SMITHSONIAN ($2.1M), STAR TREK ($1.25M), LAND OF THE LOST ($1.23M), IMAGINE THAT ($0.9M), TERMINATOR SALVATION ($0.8M).
The North American box office took in an estimated total of $45.1 million for the whole of Friday 19th June 2009.
