Overall, the US Box Office was up 33.5% on last weekend's gross.

The box office this weekend moved in to an even higher gear as a number of new films and a surprise hit fuelled a lot of activity among movie goers.

The new film from director Spike Jonze, WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE, easily took out top spot with a strong, and better than expected $32.6M over the weekend. The fantasy film for adults (and kids) was well received by audiences and most critics, and with this good opening, it should have no problem at recouping its large $100M budget.

Second place goes to another new opener, LAW ABIDING CITIZEN, a thriller starring Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler. The film managed a strong $21M despite negative critical backlash, and is a much needed hit for both stars who have not had good runs at the box office of late.

Third place goes to the year's shocking surprise of a film, PARANORMAL ACTIVITY, which increased its audience on last weekend by an astonishing 148% to take $19.6M. The film that cost only $15,000 to make has now scooped up $33.1M and is easily the biggest box office story since THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT.

COUPLES RETREAT took a hit this weekend from all the new competition, losing 50% of its audience on last weekend to take in $17.2M.

The other new opener this weekend is the horror/thriller THE STEPFATHER, which managed an okay $11.5M. This is a good result as horror films in October tend to have a predictable box office pattern, and starting this strong will only help its cause, especially considering how much other competition was out there this weekend.

The Top 12 at the US Box Office took in a total of $127,600,527 for the whole of the weekend 16-18 October 2009.
