Overall, the US Box Office was up 3.9% on last weekend's gross.

Vince Vaughn returned to the top of the box office in the comedy COUPLES RETREAT. The film earned a strong $34.2M over the weekend, easily taking out top spot and solidifying Vaughn's presence in this genre. The film cost around $70M to make which it should have no trouble in recouping in the coming weeks.

ZOMBIELAND and CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS continued to do solid business, earning $14.8M and $11.5M respectively. ZOMBIELAND's returns have now doubled its production budget, making this an excellent investment for distributor Sony. CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS is rapidly closing in on $100M (now $95M) and will do this in the next few days, particularly as it only lost 27% of its audience on last weekend.

The story of the weekend is without a doubt PARANORMAL ACTIVITY. The spooky Blair Witch-style film, which reported cost only $15K to make (or so the marketing division of Paramount will tell you), the film earned a massive $7.9M from a scant 160 theatres over the weekend. As a comparison, if the film had the same amount of theatres as COUPLES RETREAT and the same per theatre average, then in theory it would have earned over $148M (although in practice it would not have of course!). The film was first completed in 2007 and took a long while to get to cinemas after it was tossed around inside Dreamworks and Paramount between executives who did not know what to do with it. At any rate, they must have figured it out and now they have a decent win in this film.

The remainder of the Top 12 are holdovers from previous weekends. The pick of the bunch is the TOY STORY double feature which continues to do great business, adding another $7.7M to its total this weekend. The re-release has earned an impressive $22.7M on opening and has worked well as a big advertisement for the upcoming TOY STORY 3-D.

The Top 12 at the US Box Office took in a total of $95,608,627 for the whole of the weekend 9-11 October 2009.
