BOX OFFICE North America 17-19 October 2008
2008-10-19 15:49:36
Below are the weekend estimates at the North American Box Office for this past weekend:
1. Max Payne $18,000,000
2. Beverly Hills Chihuahua $11,200,000
3. The Secret Life of Bees $11,050,000
4. W. $10,550,000
5. Eagle Eye $7,343,000
6. Body of Lies $6,880,000
7. Quarantine $6,300,000
8. Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist $3,900,000
9. Sex Drive $3,566,000
10. Nights in Rodanthe $2,680,000
MAX PAYNE debuted with reasonable strength to 18 million. The Mark Wahlberg video game adaptation cost 35 million so this will become profitable very soon.
BEVERLEY HILLS CHIHUAHUA managed to jump over the new openers in to second spot, adding 11.2 million, taking its total to 69 million.
Third and fourth spots were taken by the two major new openers, THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES and W. with 11 million and 10.5 million respectively. Both films had low budgets so they will become profitable, although Oliver Stone's biopic W. seems to have suffered from the same fate as BODY OF LIES which only took in 6.8 million (total 24.4M against 70M budget), with the viewing public not choosing political fare but escapist entertainment in this era of presidential campaigns and fiscal crises. When talking dogs can beat Oliver Stone, you know something has to be different!
EAGLE EYE is now in profit, taking in another 7 million to push its total to 81 million.
The remainder of the top 10 played out as last week with the exception of SEX DRIVE which opened in ninth spot with 3.5 million against a 19 million budget.
The North American box office took in a total of 86.4 million for the weekend 17-19 October 2008.
