BOX OFFICE North America 28th November 2008
2008-11-29 14:48:35
Rather than be monopolised by one or two big releases, the opening to this weekend at the box office saw the same amount of revenue from last Friday spread out across the new and old releases fairly evenly.
FOUR CHRISTMASES, which debuted on Wednesday, earned an estimated 13.2 million on Friday. The Vince Vaughn-Reese Witherspoon starrer started the weekend in excellent fashion and has set the pace for a strong opening weekend.
Coming in second is last weekend's number one film, TWILIGHT, which shows no sign of slowing down with an estimated 11 million earned on Friday. This is an absolute powerhouse performer now, having earned a total of 104 million since opening against its 37 million budget.
BOLT comes in third, earning an estimated 10.9 million and showing some excellent legs, now having earned 50 million since opening.
Slipping to fourth is the massively-budgeted James Bond flick QUANTUM OF SOLACE. The film earned 8.2 million on Friday, still strong, but is starting to look as if it will not earn its production budget back domestically. However, the film has earned big overseas (308 million thus far) which already makes it a big hit.
MADAGASCAR: ESCAPE 2 AFRICA managed to hold on to 5th spot with an estimated 5.75 million. The film has earned a strong 150 million so far.
Lost in the flurry is Baz Luhrmann's epic AUSTRALIA which failed to ignite the box office, earning only an estimated 5.7 million on Friday. This film could be in trouble given its 150 million budget.
Jason Statham returns for TRANSPORTER 3 which earned a so-so 4.8 million on Friday. This sets the pace for a smaller opening weekend than previous installments in the franchise.
Rounding out the top 10 for Friday include ROLE MODELS (2.1M), THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PAJAMAS (0.6M), MILK (0.5M).
The North American box office in total took in 62.8 million for the whole of Friday 28th November 2008.
