2008-10-05 16:19:41
Below are the weekend estimates from the North American Box Office for the past weekend:
1. Beverly Hills Chihuahua $29,000,000
2. Eagle Eye $17,700,000
3. Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist $12,000,000
4. Nights in Rodanthe $7,355,000
5. Appaloosa $5,015,000
6. Lakeview Terrace $4,500,000
7. Burn After Reading $4,083,000
8. Fireproof $4,069,000
9. An American Carol $3,810,000
10. Religulous $3,500,000
The number one film is the Disney flick BEVERLY HILLS CHIHUAHUA which opened to 29 million. The budget for this was likely to be quite low (no official figures published as yet) so this is likely to be the start of a new franchise for Disney.
EAGLE EYE landed in second spot this weekend with another respectable 17.7 million added to its kitty. The film has grossed 54.5 million and is likely to be a winner in the next few weeks given its production budget of 80 million.
The second new opener, NICK AND NORAH'S INFINITE PLAYLIST opened in third with 12 million. Michael Cera, who starred in JUNO helped this to open well, along with the very solid word of mouth. This film was also inexpensive which could see it turn a big profit.
Director Ed Harris saw his limited release film APPALOOSA get a kick forward this weekend with the film earning 5 million.
The returning films, NIGHTS IN RONDANTHE, LAKEVIEW TERRACE and BURN AFTER READING all had the expected drops and landed in similar positions to last weekend.
FIREPROOF, last weekend's hugely profitable title is still doing good business, adding another 4 million to its total. This film only cost 0.5 million but has already taken in 12.5 million in total.
The North American box office took in a total of 95.3 million for the weekend 3-5 October 2008.
