“Mabel’s Busy Day” (1914, Mabel Normand)
There’s not too much more to this story than a hot dog girl and a hustler prone to violence. Charlie manages to find a cop that’s smaller than him to start his beating on. He shows some funny moves in this film such as smacking Mabel behind him while he’s talking to a policeman. As it’s Chaplin’s 18th film overall and in 1914, he has begun to round out his character and not let himself dawdle for too long. There is enough action and quick sequencing in “Mabel’s Busy Day” that make this one of the more enjoyable and memorable 1914 Chaplin films.
