Charlie Chaplin's "A Woman"

Chaplin's first couple of years were spent as a one man film factory churning out dozens of short comedies. These short films would set up the myth of the lovable tramp as well as establish Chaplin as a comedic tour-de-force and perhaps the most bankable comedy star for years to come.

"A Woman" is a short film that manages to show a Chaplin that is irresistably attractive to both women and men! In order to escape a girlfriend's house after her father has come home, Charlie dresses up as a woman and poses as a college chum of the girl. He then has to deal with the advances of her father and a friend of his. A worthy note here is that Chaplin shaves his trademark mustache and we won't see that again for almost 40 years!!

So I guess it's a given that a goofy hobo is just one attractive dude! But another 'loveable' trait of Chaplin we get to see here is his staple mean streak. In this film, Chaplin shoves a man into a lake repeatedly! And while just about to be slugged in the face, he ducks out of the way so the woman behind him can get it. Oh what fun! "A Woman" is typical enjoyable Chaplin fare in a 20-minute dose. Easy and light!!
