Herbie Hancock, or Ambassador Cool, is Diplomatically Incorrect’s profiled Diplomat Artist of the month. Coming on the United Nations World Stage at New York Headquarters April 30th, he graced a captivated audience for International Jazz Day. As jazz maestro, Herbie Hancock says “Jazz is the International Language” a fitting description for his United Nations’ performance. His lyrical message is that jazz is the great human connector. Music’s universal language crosses social, ethnic, and religious borders. See our video for blogs: “Jazz Day” http://diplomaticallyincorrect.org/movie/jazz-day/30548
An American, Herbie Hancock was born in Chicago on April 12, 1940 and is a pianist, keyboardist, composer, and bandleader. As part of Miles Davis’ Second Great Quintet, he helped redefine “jazz.” His music has elements of funk, soul, and jazz improvisations combining modern classical and blues, producing a “cross-over” to pop as well.
Herbie Hancock, as a Diplomat Artist, has inspired beyond the stage to social and global contributions. On July 22, 2011, he was named UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for “promotion of inter-cultural dialogue.”
His “Imagine Project” is an unprecedented international recording and film project featuring collaborations between music legend Herbie Hancock and a dozen superstars from every region of the planet. It utilizes the universal language of music to express its central themes of peace and global responsibility. The Imagine Project embodies an extraordinary lineup of international superstars from all corners of the world. Artists include Dave Matthews, Anoushka Shankar, Jeff Beck, The Chieftains, John Legend, India Arie, Seal, Pink, Juanes, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Chaka Khan, K'Naan, Wayne Shorter, James Morrison, and Lisa Hannigan. The album and film stands, on one level, as powerful testaments for the goals of world peace, humanity, tolerance, and respect for our planet. However, the Imagine Project shall remain at its core, entertainment content that is creatively and emotionally deeply fulfilling.
