The alleged “crimes against humanity” included incitement of ethnic and religious conflict in a country already shaken by previous violence along tribal and/or sectarian lines. Further Gbagbo perhaps others, brought in militia and mercenaries who committed some of the most vicious crimes - instances of massacres and indiscriminate killing were recorded by independent observers. Other indictments from the ICC may be forthcoming as well investigations: The ICC is cited ominously: “Ivorian victims will see justice for massive crimes: Mr. Gbagbo is the first to be brought to account, there is more to come” . It is I believe most wise and legally appropriate that the process be pursued in the context of the relatively non-politicized venue of the ICC in The Hague as compared to the still tense and divided political climate of the Ivory Coast – now around a decade of civil conflict.
