The UN's refugee agency - UNHCR - addresses a growing problem of refugees from drug wars in Central America and Mexico - a mandate that is different from its more traditional work in assisting victims of wars and internal conflicts.

Tens of thousands of people make their way to Mexico from Central America on mixed migration routes every year. They include victims of gang violence who need protection.The UNHCR office in souther Mexico is there to help.
