At a ceremony to mark this year’s World Food Day, the United Nations (UN) Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) named British actor Jeremy Irons its newest Goodwill Ambassador.
FAO’s other Goodwill Ambassadors such as Dee Dee Bridgewater, Carl Lewis, Gina Lollobrigida, Roberto Baggio and Carla Fracci also attended the ceremony which took place at the organization’s headquarters in Rome today (17 Oct).
Talking about the challenges to world food security, Irons said “as individuals we can be and often are compassionate, generous and fair-minded but actions on a global scale are governed by economic and political preferences.”
He added that “failure to anticipate and prevent famine carries a huge cost in debts, disruptive lives and livelihoods and the destitution of whole communities.”
"Food prices - from crisis to stability," was chosen as the World Food Day theme for 2011 following five consecutive years of unstable and often rising food prices, which currently stand close to record levels.
Commemorating FAO's founding in 1945, World Food Day is celebrated on 16 Oct in at least 150 countries across the globe. This year it also marked the 60th anniversary of the Organization's move from its first seat in Washington to Rome.
