Independent Films, Sports
Tennis star and United Nations Goodwill Ambassador Maria Sharapova marked the 25 year anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster with a public service announcement on behalf of the UN Development Program, emphasizing the recovery of the region which now encompasses three sovereign states, Belarus, the Russian Federation and Ukraine. 25 Years ago, Maria Sharapova was a year from being born, but her parents lived nearby in Gomel, Belarus. The nuclear disaster prompted her parents to move to Siberia, all then a part of the USSR (Soviet Union), before eventually moving to the United States furthering Maria's tennis training.
