July 7th, 2012, Formula PilotaChina held round 5 and 6 at Ordos International Circuit.
Round 5 (8 laps):
Round 5 saw the Chinese driver Yin Hai Tao (Team UKYO with Super License, car No.12) win and his total time was 14:47.589.Yin’s teammate Ren Nagabuchi finished 2nd (14:50.769). British driver Dan Wells (KCMG, car No.16) was 3rd.
In the morning it had rained and the track was still damp and declared wet. All cars were in wet tyres except car No.12. Yin was the only car with slick for this round. When the race started, Wells enjoyed a good start from pole, Giovinazzi (Eurasia Motorsport, car No.99) started in 2nd. Sun Zheng, who started from P3, suffered again at start and fell to P10 after 1 lap. As the race went on, Yin’s slick strategy started to give him the advantage he had hoped for. At lap 3, Yin’s teammate Nagabuchi also showed good shape, as he managed to move up from P7 to P2. From lap 5 on, Yin (P3) started clocking the best lap times. Nagabuchi passed Wells at lap 5 and led the race for 1 lap. With slick advantage, Yin managed to overtake Nagabuchi and led the race to the end. In the end, Yin won his first ever formula race and contributed the best lap 1:46.067. Nagabuchi settled for 2nd while Wells was 3rd. Giovinazzi was 4th. Raj Bharath was 5th overall and 3rd in Asian Class.
Yin was the first Chinese winner in FPC and he indicated at post race press conference:”I am thrilled to win the race. The tire choice was like gamble to us and I own this win to my team. This is my first formula season, I am still learning how to drive a RWD car. ”
Round 6 (14 laps):
Round 6 was started at 13:32. As the red lights went off, Giovinazzi got off to a good start,followed by Wells, Sean Gelael, Parth Ghorpade and Akash Nandy. Wells started chasing Giovinazzi and managed to close the gap gradually. At lap 14, after leading the majority of the race, Giovinazzi failed defending Wells and settled for 2nd. The British driver won, while Gelael finished 3rd (winner of Asian Driver Class) and setting the best lap of the round 1:41.511. Nandy was overall 4th and 2nd in Asian Class. Ghorpade was overall 5th and 3rd in Asian Class.
