Maleficent (2014) - Trailer Review

Posted on at

I had quite a large choice when deciding which trailer to review for tonight, but I think I am happy with my choice of 'Maleficent'.

I want to say straight off the bat, that I have such high hopes for this film, for one massive reason - I love the retelling of old fairy tales where the main focus is on the 'evil' character ... I love it even more when the 'evil' character is portrayed as misunderstood and we, the audience, actually start to like this character - I don't know if any of you have read the 'Wicked' book, but I enjoyed it as it retells the story of the 'Wicked Witch of the West' from 'The Wizard of Oz', except we learn that she was actually a really nice woman that was seriously misunderstood ... Anyway, to the review.

Story wise, this film (as stated earlier) seems to be telling the story of 'Sleeping Beauty' from the viewpoint of the villain 'Maleficent'. It seems to be not only retelling the events of the original fairy tail, but also of a battle between the armies of 'Maleficent' and the armies of some king or other ... So, not much of the story is being shown and I can't even guess at a possible idea of the direction the storyline will take - good news, as it means maybe its not another predictable action movie.

As far as stars in this film go, Angelina Jolie ('Tomb Raider', 'Wanted' and 'Beowulf') plays the eponymous character and Peter Capaldi ('Doctor Who', 'World War Z' and 'Torchwood') plays a king named 'Kinloch' - they're the only two stars that I know of personally. I think both of these stars have their own merits, Angelina Jolie is a big name actress who has proven time and time again, that she can act amazingly. Peter Capaldi, I haven't seen in as many programs, but I am very intrigued in his career, especially now he has been named as the new 'Doctor', and I wait in eagerness to see where he will go.

In conclusion, 'Maleficent', coming out soon - if you like fairy tales, watch this film - if you like things like 'Wicked', watch this film ... I certainly will be.
