“Witch Hunt?” or "One with everything on it,and please hold the sausage!"---Initial reaction by Cain’s Christian right base is to see it as conspiracy against their man. His supporters instinct was to follow Cain in the accusation of “witch hunt.” His campaign benefited from a surge of donations. However, that may be more an indication of spite for media than solid support for Cain I do not adhere to the theory that “where there is smoke, there is fire.” Too many opportunities for fabrication, dirty tricks or just some unbalanced person seeking attention. This story though does a factual underpinning – at least one woman did receive some money after she claimed sexual harassment from the National Restaurant Association. It does not mean that Herman Cain actually was guilty of sexual harassment in the 1990’s – many claims by employees may be settled regardless of validity as a means to avoid litigation costs and get rid of potentially bad publicity. Matters of consenting adults or behavior that can be interpreted as innocent or crude could lead to unpredictable litigation results. Sex in the Ovarian Office: However, what makes this very dangerous for Cain and ultimately damaging is that there is at least one woman and Cain was not initially forthcoming. The initial media reports did not accuse Cain of sexual harassment, but largely reported of an accusation by apparently 2 women, which did result in a financial settlement. That does not define a “witch hunt,” and Cain’s retort was neither justified nor honest with the known facts. It is this initial overly sensitive and defensive reaction that indicates fire. And, frankly it is not more clever than Bill Clinton’s “I did not have sex with that woman” retort or “I did not inhale.” Sex in the White House is not a new thing – JFK was notorious. What is different is the intensity and breadth of press coverage. Cain’s own efforts to dispel or explain the rumor will become more of the story than perhaps the initial “report,” although we must emphasize that sexual harassment is of a whole different character legally and morally than sex between consenting adults, even in the Ovarian, I mean Oval Office! More than Two Becomes a Bad Habit: What makes this case perhaps though most troubling for Herman Cain is that there is at least one woman who wants to speak to the press – presumably once freed from the legal settlement gag order. The presentation of and credibility of this woman will probably be decisive in whether Cain’s Presidential aspirations are Abel to survive, or are slain – his religious base may still opt to ignore the fundamental imagery – they love his Biblical references and rhetoric on key-tone issues as immigration, Muslims and social/economic justice. Nonetheless, most Republicans may be swayed away merely by the potential for a continuing scandal. A second woman would be a whole different quality – and when it becomes more than two it is no longer an isolated incident but a pattern of behavior-(smoking more than two a day is a bad habit, right?)-which places an unflattering tombstone on Cain’s campaign. Good news for Cain though if the stories are true: he would become the star of the next “American Pie” film – (tentatively titled “American Reunion”). His line in the film, an order to the waitress: "give me one with everything on it, and please hold the sausage." It would be a great opportunity for him to continue his book sale tour under a new veneer!
